The Long Haired Gardener
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 26 ส.ค. 2013
Hello my name is Tim, and I am the Long Haired Gardener. Welcome to my channel, where I share my passion for all things gardening. I have been a “grower” my whole life, thanks to the influence of my parents. My mom worked in greenhouses for many years, and my dad has always grown fruits and vegetables on our property. I spent the first half of my life appreciating all the plants and nature that rural Pennsylvania has to offer. Today, I live in downtown Philadelphia, where I have a small urban garden that I document on this channel. I also explore local neighborhoods, formal gardens, and arboretums in the pursuit of finding new plants and garden inspiration. I invite you to come along on my plant growing journey, which I refer to as My Philly Jungle. (📍 Philadelphia Pennsylvania, Growing zone 7b.)

Just found your channel, loved this walk! Looking forward to seeing more 😊 Thanks
Thank you, I enjoyed the walk. Haven't been in Philly for awhile. Walk many of the street with my son. Lovely homes and love seeing the creative ways homeowner bring the love of plants to the city.
That was so enjoyable. Some people really go all out on their window boxes don't they. I love the streets. I am in western Canada and the only time I've ever seen this kind of neighborhood is when I went to Washington DC and did the touristy thing; it reminds me of Georgetown. Thanks so much for the video. It went well with my morning coffee.
I am watching your channel very well, you update almost, but sadly your videos are very good but you make many mistakes in posting. Like title thumbnail, description, tag etc. Want to easily monetize your channel? i can help you.If you want, I can increase many subscribers and views by doing video SEO of your TH-cam channel. Do you want it?❤
Your garden looks great! It’s so hard to let them go just yet, I hear ya. Loving the cup and saucer vine and glad you’ve got blooms 😍 Keep us posted 😊
The sap from the Elephant Ears has calcium oxalate crystals. I got some under my thumb nail one time and it took months for my thumb nail to recover. I love your little courtyard. The way you have everything set up is so charming. Thank you for all of your hard work and for the video!!
@annabodhi38 Thank you for letting me know the name of the sap. A few years ago, after cutting the leaves off, I stuck my fingers directly inside the leaves. Let's just say I learned my lesson. I'm sorry it took so long for your thumbnail to recover. Thank you for watching!
(NYS 6B) Lantana does fantastic in ground in my full sun backyard. It’s up against the house and I know that it can be perennial in warmer climates so I am going to try covering it and see. Nothing to loose. I should just fill my whole garden with lantana even if I have to replace it every year.
@laurac56 Lantana is such a beautiful plant! Hopefully the warmth of your house adds some winter protection.
I do enjoy your bravery in growing so many tropical plants. Especially... Philadelphia!?! With how full and thick (very nice) you have your planting you could probably get away with having each of the caladiums (and maybe some of the other tropicals destined for storage) in their own pots. Regarding the pots you have in there it's difficult to see some of the large pots. If they were in their own it wouldn't be as disturbing for them and the others when removed. I've seen videos of people growing very lush gardens with almost everything in pots. You really couldn't tell there were pots. Are you able to overwinter inside somewhere in a nursery pot? Or do you store bare?
@jbielinski12 Hello! Thank you for leaving a comment. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment so I'm not able to bring in too many pots. Just my usual houseplants. All of the elephant ears and caladiums I have to dig out and allow to go completely dormant. I store them in paper bags with saw dust. Thankfully the canna lilies can survive outside and I'm going to attempt to over winter my asparagus ferns outside this year. I'm undecided if I want to leave the banana tree outside this year.
I live in Philly and feel so inspired by your channel!
@@MossOGraves Thank you so much! That means a lot! I'm never sure if people enjoy my videos.
I love going on walks in my neighborhood (Fishtown, Kensington) and doing this too! Gives me so many ideas
Hi @hannahkaiser5110 Thank you for watching! I need to visit Fishtown. I haven't been there in forever.
Hello, I enjoyed the garden tour. I have a question about your sweet potato vine. How did you grow it in soil? I had a sweet potato that I propagated in water. The roots sprouted quickly and the vine was growing wild and beautiful, but the potato of course being in water, started to rot. I dont know if I was supposed to plant the whole thing (potato and all) in soil, but because the potato was rotting, I started to cut the stems to try and propagate but each time I cut a stem off the plant became discolored and didnt do well. Also the cut stems would not grow roots. I would love to have transferrec into soil, but eventually the whole plant died. Would like to try again with propagating another sweet potato in water, but still not sure what to do once the potato starts to rot.
Hello @naturalhairandotherthang Thank you for watching. The sweet potato vines that I grow are ornamental vines that I grow for their foliage. I bought them already started in pots from greenhouses. I unfortunately don't have any experience with growing sweet potatoes to eat. My grandma used to do the method you described, but it was so long ago and she has passed away. I did see some other youtube videos that can guide you through the process.
@@thelonghairedgardener oh I'm sorry to hear about your grandma. Thank you for responding. Maybe I'll try buying ones that are already potted as well.
@MiscellaneousMichelle I had some bug activity when I took the banana out of storage, which is what is causing me to want to over winter outside this year.
Lovely!
@jerryreed6269 Thank you!
Such a wonderful, colorful variety of plants… great use of a small space! I’m in east central nj and I’m bringing in the tropicals now, I’ve found if you bring in houseplants while the indoor and outdoor night temps are similar it reduces leaf drop. Very enjoyable video! 😊🌿🪴
Hello @grannyplants1764 Thank you for watching! I usually wait too long to bring in by plants which causes them to suffer. I will try to follow your lead and bring them in earlier this year. I hope you have a great day!
I’m so curious as to how you overwinter your banana tree? I want to get a cold, hardy banana, but I’m afraid of it dying. I’m here in Delaware.
Hello @MiscellaneousMichelle I did make a video last year and I will tag you in the comments section. I'm toying with the idea of trying to over winter the banana outside this year. I have a red abyssinian which is only cold hardy down to zone 8. If you can find one, Musa Basjoo banana trees grow in zones 5 to 10 which would work for you in DE. Thank you for watching.
@@thelonghairedgardenerthank you
Hi Tim, everything looks great! Really full and lush. I really like the Mexican Petunias.. I'll need to look for them next year.
Hi @TimCT1 Thank you. I've never actually seen a Mexican Petunia for sale. Maybe because they are listed as an invasive species in warmer areas. I grew mine from a six inch cutting and it got huge! They're probably safe to grow in CT.
I joined you in the middle of the summer. Do you show us any prep work you do to the plants you bring in? I bring very little in now because debugging is such a job. I MAY take cuttings of my geraniums. I usually do, but geraniums are so easy to find each summer. I have a couple of small portulaca I like to keep because it’s not available for sale early in the summer. But it has to be debugged. 😔 We’ll see.
Hello @laurac56 In the past I have shown how I do my winter prep. Luckily the only bug issues I have had when bringing plants in are some ants. I may do the banana tree differently this year because there was some bug activity that was isolated in the bucket where I stored the banana. I frequently see geraniums in people's windows over the winter and think it's such a nice look. Have you tried sprinkling portulaca seeds around in the spring? Good luck with any winter storage you may do.
@@thelonghairedgardener I tend to have white flies (or something similar). I saw on a TH-cam video to mix insecticidal soap in water and plunge the pots into a pail of it until all bubbles come up. I did it with a couple small portulacas and it worked fairly well.
@@laurac56 Thank you for sharing that tip. I had a Cordyline plant a few years ago that was covered in Mealybugs. They are also white if you are not familiar with them. Hopefully the insecticidal soap in water works for you this year.
Love it - It’s a great combination. A nice mixture of colors. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Tim! Love these walks around Philly. I'm pretty sure the shrub at 8:18 is Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina). Hope you've been enjoying the cooler days here and there (at least it's been cooling off here in New Haven).
@TimCT1 Hi Tim! It has been "cooler" in the evenings, but I wouldn't say we are in cool weather territory yet. Thank you for identifying the Heavenly Bamboo.
7:38 @laurac56 this is what the wall looked like last year.
The Plant/tree @ 11:45 is called Black Diamond is a new series of dwarf Crape Myrtle with deep purple to black foliage and a variety of vibrant flower colors. I have (2) and it bloom from June to Sept
@@yeye3295 Hi @yeye3295 Thank you for identifying that plant! It is so pretty. Does your plant also have the white specs? I couldn't tell if they were mealybugs or just part of the plant.
OMG😍😍😍, House @3:20 is STUNNING!!! Love the combination of colors!! Grand Prize winner
@@yeye3295 I agree. I've been to this house before and they always have beautiful plants.

@laurac56 Hello! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. The dichondra silver falls were huge last year! Those are actually the same plants that wintered over and are taking longer to put on growth. Every year I get different results.

Hi Tim! Thanks for the tour. Here's a few observations for you 1. 2:30 those mini petunias are Calibrachoa (I know you know that... you've called them that in past videos) 2. 4:09 looks like a Berberis - or Japanese Barberry. Pretty, but invasive here in Connecticut. 3. 4:30 Love those terracotta colored petunias! 4. 7:11 is a Crossandra. 5. 9:30 morning glory is either "Grandpa Ott" or "Star of Yelta". I really love the little alleyways and streets in Philly. Thanks again for taking the time to bring us on your walks. Stay cool!
@TimCT1 Thank you Tim! Philadelphia is a very walkable city and has tons of small streets. Have you ever visited? Thank you for identifying those plants. I'll try to add them to the memory bank. 😂

@vickilorah8749 Thank you! I'm so glad you liked her garden. 😁
I love the short zinnias does she plant those from seed?
@NicoleNazarkiewicz Hello! In the past, she has sprinkled seeds around with success, but the short zinnias in this video were bought from a greenhouse.
What did you do to your soil to make the plants so vigorous in such a short time?
@lucart08 Hello. My parents are very lucky to have naturally good soil. She occasionally fertilizes and provides regular water. Have a great day.
This was so much fun. I loved what your mum did with the front walkway. Just wow! All those colours, it's just gorgeous. She put all those little moments all over the place, and the entire yard is quite lovely. Thank you for the tour, and for the video.

New to you, this is my first of your videos. Lovely garden! I have a half acre suburban yard with some garden, but an urban patio is what I would love to have. My patio plants and a few hanging baskets are what I really care about. I do mess in my smallish gardens, full sun against the back of my house, and almost full shade against the front. I try to keep them looking good, battling deer, rabbits, budworms, Japanese beetles, and other pests. 😳
@laurac56 Hello! Thank you for watching and sharing a little about your gardening experience. Wishing you luck with all the garden pests.
Hey Tim! Everything looks great! Yeah, ants "farming" aphids on your plants is no fun as they protect them from all kinds of good bugs who'd love to munch the aphids.
