Is this the same railroad that 30 years later is unbelievably rough track in video?
Yes..its the one where you see telephoto shots and youre just waiting to roll a rail, and a Unit. Lived in Antwerp, ohio and yes time has not been kind to this line. Line pulled further east..think east of napoleon or maybe just west of it. Line defiance to east FTW still has some moves.

That’s when pooky and mook still to that on over in there with it for then. We used to stay at Gary’s there and wait when they got to go on for it ya know? Then we chased them squirrels on for it.
Even back then, the track on that line was deplorable! Then again, the ground underneath was soft and mushy.

If they did half as much maintenance that the video actually shows they wouldn't have derailed so many grain hoppers, especially north of Olney. Watching a spreader push around ballast on one track in Howell Yard must have been the pinnacle of their "investment". We would laugh as a 5 engine led consist would come down the line, we could tell that only 2 of the 5 were actually working. Can't fix it? Call the scrapper in Ohio and see if we can trade 3 broke ones for 2 working ones. Pretty soon even working engines became a problem.
Did you work for CSX in Evansville?
@Bluegrass Man No. But I knew how much CSX hated IHRC. The day after the STB ruled, CSX had the Evansville siding for IHRC ripped out. Stories of stalled IHRC trains around Howell Yard were common. CSX got tired of pushing them out of the way while IHRC went and fetched a working engine somewhere else on the line so they could get out of the way. By getting the trackage rights revoked permanently was one less aspirin the yard master had to take.
@@spuwho was that siding for IHRC near Harwood? I’m guessing that CSX took over the River Branch operation from them in Henderson at this time. They still use the IHRC milepost numbers to this day on that line. I was a kid when IHRC operated that and I went with my dad and his brother to take pictures around Harwood and Howell yard(uncle was an engineer with ICRR). However, I don’t remember their operation in Henderson at all. I did know they switched out Brenntag(PB&S Chemical then) until they went under and ceased operations. I think they also may have switched the old IC track that crossed 5th street(now defunct). Brenntag now uses Respondek since around 2017 or so.
@@bluegrassman3040 No, it was not near Harwood the north side of town. When IC spun off this route, they had trackage rights to use the Ohio River Bridge at Henderson so they could reach the Kentucky Division that went to Paducah and Louisville. To support that, the IC used to have a siding that ran along side the current CSX tracks until it reached Howell Yard, where IC would pass through to the bridge. IHRC assumed those rights from the IC when it was spunoff. But the IHRC had motive power issues and they would stall alot trying to get over the river bridge. They would either let the train back up into the yard and try again or they would wait until IHRC could get another engine to get them over the bridge. (Which might take days) In the mean time CSX had freights on both sides of the bridge waiting on IHRC to clear. CSX out of frustration would finally call out one of their motors and help IHRC get through. This is one reason IHRC would carry 4 engine sets coming down from Newton at times. 2 engines were to get there and the other two were for getting over the bridge. But knowing IHRC, sometimes those other 2 engines along for the push weren't exactly in working order. When IHRC finally was declared dead, CSX filed a motion to declare the trackage rights dead (it was approved) and they immediately ripped out the siding all the way back to Allen's Lane. They installed a switch with a rail guard so in case any new owner of the IHRC thought they could blow through, couldn't becuase they would derail. That is how strongly the CSX felt about getting rid of IHRC.
@@spuwho oh ok. I did know that the IC had trackage rights over the Ohio River to Henderson. It’s a shame that the ICG route from Evansville to Nashville couldn’t compete with the L&N’s.
It was freezing cold , even the horn was frigid
N&W For me awesome there was something magical about that trip up and down the railroad tracks in an engine. N&W rule.

Did they save the railroad
Oh yeah, they're still around. They're doing the Santa Run (which they do every year). Apparently this is one of their best years in a long time, from what they were saying. Last year, COVID definitely hurt the railroad as well as the Great Recession before that. However, it appears they're starting to get back on their feet again. Based on what the people working there have told me, they seem a lot more optimistic about the future of the railroad. They're planning on getting that GMDH-3 running sometime in 2022, from what I've heard. It apparently turns over, it just needs some wiring work or something, if I remember correctly.
@@stevekovoc3939 that is great news

1988. That's the winter i remember that there was very little snow and that summer was a record in the books for being the hottest, driest, summer we have had..
Under the N&W, this line was called the Maumee District, running Between Toledo and East Wayne, part of the Fort Wayne Division.
And to think, for years after its sale this line was a shambling mess.
You know what happened to this rail line after the N&W

Wait, I thought the N&W merged with Southern to form Norfolk Southern in 1982.
Merger did not go through until 1990 they was running separate railroad till then by the same people
@@brianbooher7318 The N&W was merged into NS on September 1, 1998 per the N&W Historical Society and the Virginia State Corporation Commission. Until then, the N&W still existed as a corporation and an operating subsidiary of Norfolk Southern.

I am happy this was sent to me, I am a motormen/conductor that operates these cars at the New York Museum of Transportation. Museum is located at 6393 East River Rd West Henrietta, NY a suburb of Rochester, NY. We operate these cars with true overhead 600 volts DC wire on a mile and a half of track. I sure love the route this car took especially over the Mississippi River.
cool vid... am I missing something or are these guys not using radios... strange, that it's 1988 and no radios
Yep, many veteran crews at that time still used hand signals more often than a radio. Radios were still viewed by them as just another tool, a convenience. Not the necessity they are now.
Awesome! I have never seen footage of the 5th District during N&W times. The tracks were in reasonable shape then. Was the DT&I still being used to Napolean? Was the N&W still intact all the way to Toledo?
The line to Toledo was still intact at the time, but not used beyond Liberty Center. The DT&I/GTW line to Napoleon was abandoned in 1984.
@@MacowiecPL So the Dt&I was abandoned 4 years earlier but was still intact with the diamond?
@@HOTRAILProductions My memory is foggy, but I believe just the diamond and the signal system remained, with the ex-DT&I track gone. It may have been a cost factor-the cost of ripping out the interlocking vs. just leaving it there.
@@MacowiecPL was the DT&I line you're referring to the same line that went to XN tower and south to Lima?

Wonderful view of what is now considered old school railroading. 3 man crew on a local, pulling the pin on a moving caboose, ( well heck, a Caboose!) lots of hand signals, not a peck of reflective gear. Great stuff!
