Where is the actual escape route? They are focused on the rocket. Do they have to have someone unlatch the outside, then run across the catwalk the try and fit in that small tube with their helmet, spacesuit and pack?

No they never used it . They all were launched according to mission program and fromn apollo 11 they landed on the moon except for the apollo 13 which HAD a problem ..

I got to meet Mr Bishop many years ago, and it was interesting to hear his feelings about 2001. He was disappointed that all his lines had been covered with music. Hope he realised that he's part of a classic!

It's probly abandoned because any problems there going to have aren't going to allow time to escape.

it was built to protect them from an exploding rocket. better to be in a bunker than the launch pad.
They had a zipwire escape basket system from the top in the Apollo era as well (from much higher up of course!). This clip is great but slightly misleading; the escape chute to the rubber room started in the mobile launcher (the bit below the rocket) rather than zig-zagging down the launch tower. They would have taken a high-speed lift down the tower to the mobile launcher before entering the chute. The improbability of wanting to do this as the rocket was blowing up around you was probably why they introduced the zipwire basket system too...
They only tested the zipwire system with humans once in the Apollo era. Apparently no-one was particularly keen to try it...

Oh my God I just realized it was him! Good ole Klaus...checking those radiation shields. Incidentally quite a number of 007 alumni starred on UFO.
