The Camera Doesn’t Matter is a new photography podcast that focuses on how some of the best photographers and photojournalists in the world create their images.
The podcast goes beyond equipment, to focus on what truly matters, the photographer’s vision, voice and perspective on the world that they reveal to us all through their images.
Hosted by photojournalist and filmmaker Sean Gallagher, this interview-style podcast is a series of conversations that reveal the stories behind iconic photos and the working processes of professional photographers.
These conversations not only give insights into how professional photographers work but also how amateur and aspiring professional photographers can use the same ideas, concepts and methods to improve their own images.

👍
thanks You Sean!. I like your explanation make it simple to understand and try out the techniques.
Glad it was helpful, Graeme! ✊
The photo u took in jakarta @2:27 reminds me of Goodfellas when Tommy was explaining his mom's painting to Jimmy & Henry 😁

Wow, I've watched a few of your TH-cam videos but only now I learned your focus is on climate and the environment, which happens to be my field of work! I'm a climate scientist by profession and a hobbyist photographer. I was thinking like if the light is so important in photography why you hadn't made a video focusing solely on that. But then, as I watched this video, I found it increasingly insightful, especially towards the end. I understand now that your skill as a storyteller contributes to your excellence as a photographer. This video is truly amazing, and I really appreciate it.
Hello Masara. Thank you for your comment. Yes, the main focus of my work is on global environmental issues, especially surrounding climate change. You can see my stories here gallagher-photo.com/portfolio-items/environmental-stories/ The channel is still in its early stages, so there will be more videos soon that hopefully cover all the topics you are interested in learning about!
Super 👍.

There's another technique for framing. You can use the natural landscape for framing if you're doing something away from civilization. Like areas where water and land meet. Or where rocks cut off part of the sky. They're harder to come by, but pretty neat when it does.
Yes, great point. Natural landscapes provide lots of opportunities for framing 👍
This man talks like my high school photography class teacher, convincing but more importantly, he knows his subject.
I should teach high school photography 😆 Thanks for watching 👍
Fox
Thank you for giving me such a great video
Thanks for watching!
Off to a good start. @1:15 "Light" - I was in a business partnership where the other person would always want pictures, pictures, pictures. Often I would just look around; look up at the sky, and say "No." Or she'd tell me (not 'ask' which is what got my back up) to get a picture of her with some notable guest at an outdoor event and I would first pause to look up at the sky to gauge the sun instead of just snapping a shot of her and the Mayor or whomever, which drove her nuts, like I was drifting off or something. It's funny to think back to that.
Yes, most people don't appreciate light, or think about it. Thanks for sharing your experiences, Charlie.
Hi Sean may I ask what camera do you use in taking video while talking. I really like it its nice and clear. Thanks
Hi. Sure, I shoot these videos on a Canon R5 with a 35mm EF 1.4 lens 🙂
I started my journey very recently. Picked myself up a used D5600 with a nice macro lens and really having fun with it. I really appreciate your video and will follow these steps and one day hopefully it will pay off. It is truly challenging trying to replicate what I am seeing, what i want to show, into a photo.
Thanks for watching and glad the video is helpful ✊
I think that there isn’t a photograph in the world that has any narrative ability. Any of ‘em. They do not tell stories - they show you what something looks like.” Winogrand.
Maybe you could argue this for individual images, but when you start to put images into a series, book, photo essay etc. then it goes beyond just showing you what something looks like.
@@SeanGallagherPhotographer I agree, but 99% of us just try to create an emotion through one single photograph not a story. That's what the 1% left do through multiple different pictures.
@@foisonurlubu4303 Part of why amateurs don't improve is because they fixate too much on capturing just random single images. As I've explained in my videos, picking a subject matter, topic, location etc. and building a portfolio of work around a theme is one of the best way to raise the overall level of your images. From this approach, you may then find those stand-out images you're searching for.
Great video Sean,gd advice
Thanks for watching 👍
The pictures with the plates being washed: I would reframe it to a square since the elements on the right side are distracting, or put the bowl right in the center of the frame.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts 📸
Hello Sean! Great initiative! Had been looking for the podcast and can't find it on the "podcast app"(the one I use on iPhone). Great chat, loved the theme! Cheers.
Thanks for watching, Carlos. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
@@SeanGallagherPhotographer Hi Sean! I actually didn't, just can't find it. I'm using the podcast app on iPhone. Thank you for the feedback. Cheers Carlos
At the moment, it's just on TH-cam. After a few more episodes, hopefully we'll go audio only on some of the apps. Thanks for your patience 🙂
❤❤❤ so helpful

I came here for photo composition tips and I found them with extras: the realization of how harsh life can be in my hometown Jakarta 😢. Thank you for the powerful images and advices.
Thanks for watching. Jakarta is a great city with a lot of challenges too.
Looking forward
👍
Its been 40+ degreees for almost three months in southeast asia. April 2024
Yes, these months have been very hot again in South and South East Asia.
It’s not the camera; it’s the person behind the camera. (True Facts!) Every camera does not take the same quality of pictures. And if you think a iPhone or Android can take better pictures; just like any other professional camera, you’re sadly mistaken. If that’s the case I would’ve saved a whole lot of money in my pocket.
Of course, there are clear technical differences between a cellphone and high-end cameras. The point of the video however, as you seemed to note, is that ultimately it's the person behind the camera that really makes the difference.
I like this podcast✌Good luck
Thank you for watching ! ✊
28mm on my APS sensor Canon (45mm full frame) and it does seem to do everything as long as I move around. I’ve tried 24mm to get the 35mm effect but find it a tad wide.
Thanks for sharing your set-up 👍
you are so inspiring Sean. utmost respect and warm regards from Indonesia
Thank you 🙏 .... Always enjoy visiting Indonesia! 🙂
hello Sean. i love your channel, you really gave me more understanding about photography. thank you so much
Thanks for following along, Tandry ✊
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
The photo at 7:12 is really beautiful, I just don't understand how you were able to take it without getting in trouble with the girl's parents. I just can't think of a way of getting photos like that, even without children in it, without getting punched. Am I overthinking it?
I have never ever felt physically threatened when taking photos. If you are out in the world taking images with good intentions, I don't think you have anything to fear. If people notice you taking photos, simply speak to them and explain what you are doing. Smile, be friendly and honest. Show them your IG feed, offer to send them a photo. Be sensible and respectful of people, of course, but don't overthink it.
Thank you very much for this video. I am starting to learn fotography and your tips are very useful for me in this new adventure I just begun.
I am glad the tips are useful for you, Jose ✊ Good luck on the adventure!

Is that runway a neighbourhood street?
Loved this first episode of your podcast, can’t wait for more, please don’t stop making content 🖤
Thanks ❤
Where you screwed up is in not giving recognition to the obvious suffering of those who you took a picture of.,especially those 2 children . Doesn't do you any favours. I lost interest in you after that . You subordinated their humanity to ''a technique''. A fellow street photographer
As a professional photojournalist, I am acutely aware of the situations my subjects are in. All images are taken in a photojournalistic editorial context with the primary aim of highlighting the issues people are facing. If you were familiar with my work, the topics I cover and the way I work with subjects, this might be more clear. Many images from my archive I choose not to use in these tutorial videos. You can visit my website to learn more about my work.
@@SeanGallagherPhotographer Well you've made that clear now , but to those who are not familiar with your work might well react as I have, especially as a genocide is taking place under our vary noses as we speak... some of us are acutely sensitive at the mo ... especially regards the disgusting role the Western media has played.
Great video! Just about to start taking photos again after a long break. Where's a good place to pitch nowadays for work as a freelancer? Is it online mags and newspapers as before? Or, best to try and get a regular paid gig? Thanks for any advice.
Hi Steven. I won't lie, it's tough being a full-time freelancer these days. Without knowing your specific situation, I am reluctant to give advice. Start with photography as a side-hustle perhaps, and see where it takes you. Good luck! ✊
@@SeanGallagherPhotographer Thanks for the honest advice! I'm getting back into article writing and also, going to offer a few photos to go alongside. I'm working online and travelling around S.E. Asia at the moment, so want to pitch some travel/topical/culture articles. Thinking about getting a Sony A7 iv or something like that to use. I've got an old Canon 7D which I love but probably too old for modern day websites.
Hi Sean, thank you for the amazing tips and wonderful photo. Your shots were familiar to me since I read the NG article a long time ago, and this video reminds me that I have to go out shooting photos more often since I work in Jakarta :D
Thanks for commenting, Arief. Glad you enjoyed the video. Jakarta is a fascinating city to photograph in! 📸
Sean. Not one of your better interviews. You were continually interrupting Stefan as he was trying to tell his story. Also you jumped around instead of letting the conversation flow. Too much interviewer talk. We want to hear your guest, not you.
Not sure which other interviews you are referring to, as this was the first one in this series. Perhaps you mistake me for someone else 😉 Always interesting to hear feedback and opinions.
I was wondering why in some or maybe most cameras the grid is not designed into this rule of thirds. In my nikon the frame is divided horizontaly and verticaly by 3 lines
Hi Andy. I am not familiar with each brand's set-up but perhaps there are options to change it in the settings? As the ROT is fairly simple, it's quite easy to keep the general principle in mind when shooting without needing the exact lines appear in the viewfinder. Good luck out there practicing! ✊📸
I dived late in life my late 60s , intuition eventually said canon 6D MK1 new at the time , glad I did the results/ sharp/and colour/ gave me the unexpected Buzz I needed to enhance my interest “ as like most when Young holiday snapshots was the only example of what I thought was photography ! ! ! Thanks
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Fred. Good luck with your new camera 👍
