The Dinosaur Omelette
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 11 มี.ค. 2021
When the world faced the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, we recognized a growing demand for self-sufficiency. Nestled in the hills of Southern Pennsylvania, our homestead, The Dinosaur Omelette, became a hub for efficient food production, especially for those with limited land. Angela takes pride in raising quality Silkie chickens, hand-raised and bred for exceptional temperament and form, making them wonderful pets.
To us, the Jumbo Quail is the unsung hero of food production in the U.S. In a culture dominated by chickens, we embraced the challenge of introducing these remarkable birds and are delighted to see their popularity rise as prolific egg producers for all.
Our mission is to share knowledge, inspire, and equip our viewers with practical skills. Your feedback is essential, and we're dedicated to providing valuable content for the small farm and homestead community. For more information and to connect with us directly, visit our Facebook page.

A Glimpse into Our Daily Routine: Moving Coturnix Quail Chicks to the BrooderDescription
Spiral breeding , sometimes called clan mating, is a good way to keep the relatedness of your chickens under control. Generally, chicken breeders want a little relatedness, in that you want your best birds passing passing on their genes (cull all poor birds, do not use them for breeding). But spiral breeding, is a way to avoid inbreeding depression, which often shows up as poor fertility, and perhaps a decline in health. You need to keep three breeding pens minimum.
@@pseudopetrus very accurate and succinct overview of this subject. Thanks and happy breeding!
@@thedinosauromelette I breed show chickens, so most of my breeding is about traits, so breeding to improve phenotype. I don't specifically spiral breed but I do keep meticulous records of each birds pedigree. Once I have fixed my desired traits, I would likely go to a spiral breeding program, with a few side project here and there. I have six lines of the same breed on the go right now. For me, right now each line is like an ingredient to make the best stew ever! But for most people, you can do really well with 3 pens and a good selection discipline, in other words, don't breed poor quality birds. That is the key!
In the past I’ve made pizza dough, and thoroughly enjoyed it. This tutorial is so very inspirational that I think that I’ll start baking again. I have little doubt that start it up again. Thank You so very much 👏👏

@ I absolutely agree. I have looked at the ingredients in breads in the supermarkets. I often put that loaf bread back on the shelves 😳
@@waydeepinsidehahaha…yeah. I understand. Thats really why i cook everything. The available, premade food is pretty much damaging to ones health. Thanks Steve!
Good video. Have a question. Have you sprouted other grains, before making it into flour??
Hey hon! I’ve sprouted most of the dry grains (various beans, lentils, chia, etc) I don’t mash them into flour, rather I will add them whole to bread or stews. Sprouting the grains and particularly beans, aids in their digestion and reduces the amount of compounds that are problematic for people.
I am so glad you had this topic. So many people don't realize the problems. Blessings.
@@VeysPlace aww thanks hon!!! It’s a shame there is so much intentional misleading just to make a $ off of the consumer.
i been quail farmer for a couple years. Found that if the roof is 12 inches or higher the quail kill them selves. Also if u can isolate/insulate electrically to hot wire the cage so if the evil hungry kritters touch the cage and the ground it seems they ( like coons or cats) dont want to play with mr electric cage while having no effect on the birds as they are not grounded. On really cold nights its amazing what some thin plastic can do to wrap the entire structure to block from wind. Mix wood shavings into the manuer and there is little smell and if using trays it works to absorb the liquid.

Bless day , how much acres do I need for about 2500 Laying hens
@@jeanpierr8044 The acreage needed for 2,500 laying hens depends on how the hens are managed (free-range, pastured, or confined housing) and the space you want to allocate per bird. Here are general guidelines: 1. Confined Housing (Indoor system with outdoor runs optional) • Indoor Space: At least 1.5-2 square feet per bird is recommended. For 2,500 hens, you’d need about 3,750-5,000 square feet (~0.1 acres for the barn). • Outdoor Runs (optional): If you provide outdoor space, about 2-4 square feet per bird is common, requiring 5,000-10,000 square feet (~0.25 acres). 2. Free-Range System • Free-range systems require 1-2 acres for every 1,000 hens, depending on how often you rotate pasture and maintain forage quality. • For 2,500 hens, you would need 2.5-5 acres, assuming regular pasture management. 3. Pastured System • Pastured systems typically allocate 108-217 square feet per bird (or 0.0025-0.005 acres per bird). This means you’d need 6-12.5 acres for 2,500 hens to allow proper rotation and pasture regrowth. • If the land is rotationally grazed and intensively managed, you may need less acreage. Factors Affecting Space Needs: • Climate: In colder areas, more indoor space may be needed. • Management Style: Rotational grazing reduces the total acreage requirement but requires more planning and infrastructure. • Local Regulations: Check local zoning and farming laws, as some areas have specific requirements for space, stocking density, and waste management.

Not true I've had a few hatch with air cells on the side. Probably my issue but they do hatch
@@JacobMora-h8t thanks. Yes, they can hatch with the air cell in the side. Simply may have developmental issues or hatching issues if done in mass. I mean- if 100 eggs incubated with air sac on the side vs the proper top of egg; then you will likely see a difference in the chicks or number that hatch. Thanks again for the comment.

Better than the first coop we had when we completely clueless on what we were doing.
@@CarbonTheCrab hehe- yeah, those were my kids bunk beds. I wanted to have a moment from when they were little😂 Many of the coops look like sheds- some ARE sheds. We covered the roof of one hutch one very cold winter for a day and the interior became completely saturated with water vapor and became very wet! So sides and bottom are covered but the roof/ceiling of the hutch has hardwire cloth to allow that ventilation! Thanks for the question!
@@thedinosauromelette Thanks for responding!!! I'm building mine this coming week and I'll leave the roof off.
@@MissingLinkMTB I’m sorry - you need a roof to protect from rain/sun/snow. I was referring to the individual hutch that will house the quail. I leave the entire top side ventilated (essentially uncovered ) by covering the top in hardware cloth . The hutch with the hardware cloth is attached to supports/legs that will absolutely have a roof. Sorry if what I said earlier I as confusing.
Is it possible to make this in Español? I want to convince my dad to get quail's because i want to raise and sell quail eggs as my sae project for school😭
@@Csc180 hehe…I’m sure I could run my happy voice through a translator😂 They are great little birds and my favorite for eggs. I prefer them over our chicken eggs.
I understand not sharing the recipe. But that makes the title totally misleading....I came on here looking for a layer recipe, and watched the whole thing not to get one. I'm not sure what the point of the video is then....? We actually DON'T learn how to make our own healthy layer feed...
@@almetabeiler1491 no we don’t give out the precise recipe and associated percentages of ingredients. But the ingredients are fully available on our feed page. Any feed producer will share with you the ingredients of their feet, but they’re probably never going to go into the specifics of the ratios. To develop those ratios take considerable time, effort, research, and not only time but monetary investment. However, again, the same ingredients that there are available on our feeder other competing feed a free leave them on line.
Anyone else doinf apartment Quail
@@teslabot5650 hey there! There are many people who do raise quail inside (apartments/home). The issue with quail (or any bird really) is that they produce a dust from feather growth. So the number of birds is important. Where as keeping 5 or so quail inside may not be an issue; keeping 50 would. We did discuss quail in apartments in one of these Live videos(sorry I forget exactly which!)
@@thedinosauromelette yeah 50 would be problematic
Again, I can’t thank the both of you guys enough for these very informational video and the guides are so cute! Thanks.
