    Great video. Question, fishing the St Mary’s system in the UP in a couple weeks. WIth cranks would you target shoals/humps or big flats this time of year?

    • @RyanSaid19
      @RyanSaid19 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Man that is a tough one....you probably won't like my answer but I would say you need to try both. If I had to pick one I would still say flats, but flats with features...maybe some rocks or small humps on them or little patches of grass. We are in that transition time of year where you could have some summer fish still on deep flats, or fall fish getting on the humps and shoals......or some mix thereof! If you look back at what Seth Fieder did in that Bassmaster tournament a couple years ago in the fall on St. Clair, he was still targeting flats, but flats with little humps and such near current. I have not fished the St. Mary's so I don't know about the current situation, but they will definitely be moving into current and setting up. The GREAT thing about crankbaits is you can fish them fast, and if the fish you want are there (meaning a good school) one of them will take a poke at your bait. Best thing I can say is cover some water!

    • @blahblahmilbury
      @blahblahmilbury 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RyanSaid19 thanks Ryan. It’s an incredibly diverse stretch of water between Sault st Marie and Lake Huron. Lots of current near the channels. Very rocky body of water. It should be peak color change up there. I like your recommendations on having a good mix of fish stages. Definitely going to try everything with cranks

    Hi Ryan. More good information that I can use. I started using the Ned Rig, same one as you and have yet to catch a fish on it. I fish St.Clair and a lot of inland lakes. St. Clair in the South Channel area mostly. Any tips on inland lakes, tons of weeds this year with all the heat.

    • @RyanSaid19
      @RyanSaid19 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you really want to get the feel for it, start on a high percentage area like out from Harley Ensign….just work on getting bites and feeling what they feel like. Go with a 3/16 or 1/4 head too to start, again to make sure you can feel it if you are in a lot of current it can be hard to get the feel since it’s so light

  • @trapin68

    Great info Ryan but I do have a question about letting the bait "fall on a slack line". You have mentioned this for Tubes and Drop Shots as well. I have tried this and I have found that there is no way to detect the bite when the bait is falling. I used 10lb braid to 9lb flouro and I used a pretty sensitive $200 setup. If we're letting it fall on a slack line, will the fish have the bait in it's mouth long enough by the time we close the bail and start retrieving?

    • @RyanSaid19
      @RyanSaid19 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s true mostly….but I don’t worry about that too much. Those fish are meaning to eat it on the fall…they suck it in so just be sure to check in with your bait as soon as it hits the bottom by counting it down (so they don’t swallow it)…sometimes you can see the line twitch but as long as you check in before to long

    You do a great job with these. I like that you touch on the retrieve. I watch a TON of TH-cam videos on fishing and most of those guys will talk about the baits, rods, reels, and when and why to fish them....but they hardly EVER touch on the retrieve, and to me that's the most important part of fishing.

    • @RyanSaid19
      @RyanSaid19 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yes, none of that other stuff means much if you don’t get it in front of the fish! I always tell my clients to start with a “low and slow” retrieve, then gradually work their way up to a higher speed if the fish are not responding. The more active the fish, this higher and faster we wind....but alas active fish are not the norm haha!

  • @trapin68

    So a 7' Medium Heavy/Fast spinning rod will not work for Tube Fishing?

    • @RyanSaid19
      @RyanSaid19 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will work for sure....what I have noticed is that my clients (any myself) land more fish with the medium light in most circumstances. What I mean by that is if, for example, over the course of week my clients catch 100 fish on tubes, with a medium light rod I have found they will land 85 to 90 or more of those fish (all other things being equal) whereas with a medium heavy they might land 75-80 of those fish. Keep in mind the skill level of the angler factors in a lot and I see a wide variety of skill levels in my clients. The lighter rod just absorbs more of the hard head shakes from smallmouth and makes it less likely for them to throw the light wire hooks
