How long does Dundee Cake keep once cooked? Is it like Xmas cake - keeps for ages?
The Spoony thingie is what i was taught a LADY SPOON .! Not the real name , but just a fun thing ,,, Lady spoons have holes ! Silly but fun .... ps ! That looks absolutely stunnin
Wonderful...love the simplicity of this recipe...and a fine presentation
@@jmims912 what a lovely comment, thank you so very much. H
ah bugger off they started it and they are defo not Orcadians and stay off the kirk!
I love tablet.❤❤❤
I tried this today and my tablet was very crumbly in the pot. I’m hoping it sets more solid! Did I cook it too long?
Eating the pies from the bakers straight out of the oven was a thing we always looked forward to. The juices running down your chin was the best part. As for stovies. You no had much money but this dish filled your belly more than once and kept you warm in the winter months. The english might call some of our ways of making Stovies bubble and Squeak. Where the original was far superior to that.
@@BigglesBurgers You've taken me right back to the Hyper Market. I can still feel the juices (likely grease) smacking at my lips. So yummy. H
lovely
Can I ask can u take a vehicle down and can u pitch a tent ?
This was such a great story! It’s one of those that gives you a bit of hope for the future when things seem grim.
Marie-Luise from Trier Germany Best to do with flowers Germans have to learn Thanks ❤
How i wish to be there Miss Orkney every day
Every year it is a wonderful display
Just had a 3kg bag of the Orkney beremeal delivered and looking forward to cooking these.
Easy to follow recipe for sure. Only issue is I am like you. It's the same as Tunnocks Tea Cakes and the Snowballs. Once you open the packet they are all gone and am the only person in the house.
Would you like the ingredients list in cups and tablespoons and ounces?
@@duncanhunter9403 I should have it converted somewhere at home as this recipe is so very old that it would have been in pounds and ounces etc. not currently at home so shall get back to you with the measurements. I hope this is ok. H
@@duncanhunter9403 I think it should be 5 cups of granulated sugar, 250mls milk is 8.45 US fluid ounces, 125g butter is 1/2cup or 1.10 sticks, 397g condensed milk is 1&1/4 cups approx maybe a dessert spoon more will be needed and then just 1/2tsp vanilla extract. I must caveat to say I've never made it with these measurements, but I've tried to be as accurate as possible. I do hope they make sense. H
I would love to go there.
I enjoyed growing up there in orkney with my family and friends and I enjoyed playing with my barbie dolls and friendly people loved beautiful beaches and very friendly people and safe to grow up in orkney with my family and friends
Hopefully someone watching this video in orkney people I used to lived in orkney and say hi to this cafe

Excellent presentation as well as being enjoyabale and informative. Well doneAndrew, for all your persistance and work towards this cause! I hope all works out well for it's future.
Nice. Stovies are the Scottish Paella.
So true, so controversial. H
Well that was a waste of time and money. They must have teeth like iron in Orkney because what I ended up with was rock hard. Having fine some further research I found a recipe that actually makes sense and has temperatures to cook to. Nice lady pity she can’t cook
I'm sorry that it didn't work out for you. Working in keeping as near as possible with traditional recipes makes thermometers redundant I'm afraid. It is a hard confectionery unlike fudge which is softer. Scottish tablet does tend to be harder than fudge. Thanks for leaving me the feedback anyways. H
John Rae was one of the toughest, most resilient explorers of Canada. He traversed many thousands of miles, often alone, in the endless boreal forest and tundra. He was respected by the natives, who he in turn respected and travelled with.
He should be more well-known especially, in Canada. Lady Franklin is a _____.
We did it nearly two weeks ago...
A bit late to the party. Just wanted to say thank you I have just baked my first loaf and it turned out really good much appreciated. Ps snowball recipe worked a treat too. Thanks from a very novice baker.....

My ❤drumming old scot girl Trier Germany. LOVE you
Great team work from our two reviewers!
Great video Helen, going to try it with S collins lorne arriving down south next week 😊
Beautiful to see & be on.
It’s not stovies if made with corned beef it’s corned beef hash , your right stovies is made with sausage
I bake malt loaves now and again, stick one in the freezer to be consumed at a later date for myself and my family love it. I soak my fruit: raisins and dates, in strong tea and leave it to soak overnight. I also put some malt extract for a few bursts in the microwave, makes it easier to spread on the loaf, in my opinion. Not a bad recipe but I'd feel I'd be missing out if I were to use white sugar instead of muscovado sugar, but I suppose if you've nothing else at hand why not but I always make sure that I have all the ingredients at the ready.
Stupidly burnt my bottom lip removing a good layer of skin eagerly tasting it off the spoon seconds after pouring it into the baking tray 🤬🤬🤬🤡🤡🤡 remember folks no taste tests till its set lol
Oops, not so good. Hope it tastes good to make up for it. H
