Descending the west side of Monarch Pass, in Colorado. Nov 3, 2023
มุมมอง 58ปีที่แล้ว
The pass is widely considered one of the most scenic in Colorado, offering a panoramic view of the southern end of the Sawatch Range from the summit.[3] During the summer, an aerial tram from the parking lot at the summit carries visitors to the top of Monarch Ridge above the pass (at approximately 12,000 feet (3,700 m) above sea level), allowing a wider view of the surrounding peaks. You people are crazy
Nah, with years of experience, and the proper equipment, it's only a little scary.
I can hardly believe there aren't guardrails. Once you start sliding, you can bail but you might not make it. Your passenger on the right side, stands a better chance of the bail as soon as the vehicle starts sliding! I'm thinking of the time when I was on a road like that and hit black ice! That frozen snow actually gives your tires something to grab onto!
I know 2 people who have gone over the side and survived. One was in some guys old pickup, and as I recall, it was a day or two before they were spotted!
How fast are you going? Seems pretty fast.
It always looks a bit faster on video, but probably 25-30 mph. We've spent a lot of time on that road in wonderfully bad weather, so unless there is traffic I'm good.
@jimgardner6676 It looks like that is the average speed with all the curves but the more hairpin ones go down to 15 mph. It would be too much for someone doesn't do alot of winding driving, wouldn't it. I wonder how many people drive the road at night, and I guess very few if any would attempt at night in the snow.
@@FoxRivers778 I did a couple of jobs down in Durango 3 years ago, and ended up driving home to Montrose in some pretty heavy snow. In my Altima, with snow tires. I miss our Forester, that little bugger was solid in those conditions.
Dude, got an email? I don’t do FB anymore
jggardne@gmail.com! Been wondering how you've been
I drove this in tractor trailer hauling groceries for City Market on a regular basis all 4 seasons. An experience I shall never forget. Many stories to be told.
I should've seen this video before trying to drive through there earlier 😂
I did the same thing two weeks ago. 🙃
@kathrynlindquist2441 OH my goodness guess I'm not the only one 😂
Going downhill is even more risky. Shift your car into low if you're automatic, or into second if your using a stick. My opinion is that anyone driving Colorado needs a stick. Bottom line, that winter scenery is gorgeous! Thanks for sharing this.
I have automatics, but I'm usually in a lower gear on any descent. Saves braking.
all the traffic seems to be coming from where you're going
Your crazy to drive on a 😮frozen road
Some of my friends think so, too. ;)
I would be sweating bullets and white knuckles the whole time!
We've been driving that stretch for decades, I guess you get used to it.
Jesus lead me away from the cliffs edge one afternoon. Driving home to Montrose from building houses in Telluride. 🙏
How is love Colorado ❤️
Be very careful, go slow, pray. Or stay home.
No way would I drive this in winter time. But I definitely would in the summer. Windows down sunroof open and music up. Beautiful scenery though.
Not a stranger to driving in the snow but I like flatter terrain without the cliffs to fly off if you get a little off the edge of the road. Mostly stay in Indiana in the winter. I'd be completely out of my element in Colorado. No ditch to safety when another driver gets in your lane. No way out!
I wouldn't fool around in a Midwestern blizzard, that's for sure! But they are plenty of plow trucks out working during storms, and we love the adventure of it all. Not to say my wife doesn't get a tad nervous at times, tho.
What’s the name of the second song? 🧐
It's Eric Johnson, off Ah Via Musicom, not sure which tune.
I did it too. In April, 1973. It was very very scary. Dreadful. There were huge icicle hanging from the cliffs
Beautiful, but scary
Me too except I was driving south to Silverton and visibility was only about 20 feet in a Taurus, took me about 20 minutes to get out of the car when I got to Durango my ass was puckered to the seat...
I'm not a truck driver but I have talked to several OTR drivers in Michigan and they told me that the little over the road training that the newbies get and then put out on the road by themselves is not enough training and there are roads in California that would make a new driver quit and leave his truck on the side of the road.
I lived in Silverton for a year. Avalanches on 550 to both the north and the south closed off the town for a week. It was sunny and in the 30s, but we couldn't get out.
I drove over Red Mtn Pass in one hell of a snow storm back in the early “80’s”. Scary but I made it to Montrose, Co 💜
We used to drive up from Albuquerque for winter storms, but we moved up to Montrose 7 years or so ago.
I’ve driven Red Mountain many times and there is no way in hell I would do it in a storm.
We think of it as a sport... we used to drive up from Albuquerque for winter storms to have lunch in Ouray, and then drive back. Now we live in Montrose, and it's 40 minutes away. In fact, it's snowing now, and if I didn't have things to do, we'd be on our way! We've always been a little crazy that way.
@@jimgardner6676 so you're a thrill seeker.
@@khanysafan1705 I'd say more of a calculated risk.
I’ve done that road a couple times at 2:00 am in the morning in blinding snow storms. Don’t recommend it !
Slow and easy! :-)
КЛАССНО БЕЛО СУПЕРСКИ! 👍🏻🇷🇺
Was this near collbran?
OMG I drove that road a month ago and I was terrified. Doing it in a snowstorm NO F,,ING WAY I would stay in Silverton until summer
Awesome video brother! I was hoping to see the flow in the stream though; how noticeable was the increase in flow dude?
Full up, bank to bank! Max flow, for sure.
Jim Gardner I bet, that’s insane brother! Thanks for the reply dude!
0:44 That is the most dangerous turn going north/Downhill of the whole pass.
My pucker factor has been high on this stretch of 550 during the several times I've driven it in the summer months. It'd be off the chart under these conditions.
That Loverboy was jamming and living in Colorado, you have guts.
Isn't that Highway 550?
Kevin Massey well, I'll be damned. Sure is!
Jim Gardner been over it many times. It's one of my favorite areas in Colorado.
Monarch?
JayRM - We just moved here a year and a half ago, and the guy at the General Store at Cimarron told us they couldn't open all 4 gates anymore, it damaged the settling pond the first time they did. I caught 1 floodgate last week, and when we went to the Black Canyon on Sunday, a ranger told us 2 gates were open, so we went over to see that, and now this!
We were up there this morning (5/25) and the river is bank full. I understand the last time the spillways were open this far was 20 years ago.
Beautiful
