Funkytown The Movie

Funkytown is a tour through triumph and tragedy of aspiring rock stars from Minneapolis. As this rockumentary travels into the experiences of working musicians, a fascinating slice of American life (1995-1998) and the Rock ‘n’ Roll world emerges.

Probably the most requested song from the Lipps, Inc. 4 album. Sung to perfection by Melanie Rosales and Margaret Cox (after they replaced Cynthia Johnson). An amazing vocal assault that demands to be heard. Hey ya! Written and produced by Steven Greenberg. Keyboard solo by Ivan Rafowitz.

There They Are, a gorgeous song written by Steven Greenberg with a top notch vocal performance by Cynthia Johnson, from the late 1980 release Pucker Up on Casablanca Records.
anyone here in 2024
Minneapolis
I discovered the song thanks to my grandfather's records We can't listen together now, but at least we listened to the same song at different times. Heaven waits for us.
Jesus, wow. He hs 6 Synare Drums. Today you can hardly get one. Those were the days.....
So what we have here is a bunch of aging white men and one chick that could sing.. I guess that's all you need for a hit.
And literally only one verse. It takes genuine talent to turn nothingburger lyrics like these and make a platinum record (okay, talking about Funkytown). Pretty incredible. Aaaaannnnnnd... sorry, my fellow Yids, but I *despise* disco to this day, especially because all of the stupid, useless noises in there. But, is it stupid if it works, right? Good work.
@@YippeeSkippie426 Repetitive themes are often popular in songs because it makes them easy. It's better than for example "Sing God's Song" by Carolyn Ann Aish which has the most verses of any published hymn, with 754 verses. Try remembering That song!
I want to share with you what I've just experienced while listening to this song. I was 13 when I discovered FUNKYTOWN. Wow. What's more, it was with this very song that I discovered the 12-inch versions, listening to the extended version of FUNKYTOWN by an "old man" who was a DJ in a village disco-mobile. I immediately wanted to know where I could buy this long version. Then, listening to the radio like a music maniac (I later became a radio host and singer), I discovered HOW LONG and really liked DESIGNER MUSIC.The years have gone by and I've pretty much forgotten all that. But tonight, while doing some research on the web, I stumbled across the Lipps Inc. TH-cam channel. So I took a look. Seeing the video for There They Are, I ask myself, "What the hell is this song?" I decide to listen to it. From the very first notes... I feel a great emotion of nostalgia... I don't understand why... I continue listening... and realize that I really liked this song but had forgotten it. But how could I have forgotten such a beautiful song? After a bit of searching, I realized that it was the B-side of the HOW LONG single... and, at the time, I remember that, when I bought a 45 rpm (or a 12-inch), I always listened to the 2 sides (I wasn't just buying a song and a bonus, no: I was buying 2 songs). 😊 So there you have it. All this long story to thank you because you made me live beautiful emotions tonight by allowing me to hear again this beautiful song. Thank you for your work and be well.

Gotta make a move to atomic rice pudding.
How very cool to view previously unseen (by me anyway) origins of a jam you have loved for 44 years. The ode to the DJ! Love it, loved it, will always love it. Great job representing the Minneapple, Mr. Greenberg. Love + respect to ya!!
Ivan Rafowitz is amazing!!!!
Cynthia is funktown ❤
My best memory
The way it should always had to be!
Finally , the real band!
Where can I find the full version of this version of Funky Town. This jams!
Who’s on the studio with you?
Mind blowing!
would love to hear anyone elaborate on the hardware used here, and the e-drum set, those sounded very nice, loved those low bases he hit last every round. magnificent upload
Came upon The Found's 97 album yesterday and I've been falling in love with the band. Their music is awesome and this documentary shows me that they're cool cats. Absolutely awesome
Thanks I really appreciate that!
Cinthya Johnson in her website says "In this video Cynthia is singing "Hold Me Down" and was made to look like she was singing "Funkytown".
Beautiful !!! I have the LP vinyl , made in Italy 1980 .... reminds some nuances of Endless Love , that came out the year after .
So this is the true miss johnson
Is there a video with all the band playing it live?
a real soulful song <3
More please 😊.. and btw am I the only person on earth who ADORES their final album "4"?.. I'm not looking to debate Cynthia's vocal talent versus her replacement (s) , or that it's an album that changed the course of music , I just find it to simply be an endlessly listenable collection of infinitely hummable tunes , nothing more nothing less. Would love to see a proper/official re-release on CD.
you are not alone! lipps 4 rules
@@johnstrawberriusfields suddenly the world seems like a less lonely place lol, thanks for letting me know. Also found out recently that Margaret one of the vocalists on "4" did a huge amount of back up and some vocal leads on apparently unreleased tracks as well with none other than Prince!!!
@@kevinsingel7062 You can watch her sing every Sunday night at bunkers in Minneapolis as well
finally! i've been searching for this a lot! thank you :)
The amazing vocal talent of Cynthia Johnson
It's marvellous to see!
Why no year ?
RajSarchimelia February 1981. Private show at Duffy’s, Minneapolis. Great reviews from local press.
Thank you, then maybe you can tell what song it was. I, and maybe others could try to make a sound overlay.

Yes-the REAL Cynthia Johnson! Glad to finally see a video with the real lady in it. Can't wait for Cynthia's new solo album to hit!

They don't have money for a full video? This is PROMO CLIP? Why this is too short?
long story, no pun intended
*Funkytown Spell check
it's ONEWORD, thank you.
Is there a longer version of this? I was in a taxi recently and heard a reggae version of funky town. This is the closest thing I have found to what I heard. Original is the best but I was really digging the reggae sound.
I have so many happy memories of playing this (as a dance DJ) and of dancing to this most wonderful cut. It was guaranteed to pack the floor and put a smile on everyone's face, every time....
definitely one of the most beautiful songs ever written! What a Love story of growing up and understanding who and what is important.
Really miss that era..this song exemplifies it pretty much. Thanks for the clip.
