Well I have brought yet another project… A 1963 u404 Mercedes unimog This unimog was used in the German army as a radio box I am planning on removing the radio box and replacing with a flat bed to make it a bit more uselful Cheers for watching

Good luck in the further stages of the project!!! There's a lot of work waiting for you :) I'm starting a similar adventure myself, but I think my Unimog is in a slightly better body condition than yours. I managed to start mine for now :) Good luck once again and I'm waiting for reports from the renovation.

I have looked on their website and they don’t have any 404 cabs advertised, but perhaps i shall give them a call just incase they have one at the bottom of the yard or something. 😅
Tom, love your videos. I have a few questions. If I get a OM617 with a starter, will it work or do I need to get custom starter. Second, what work did you have to do to the flywheel or did you mount the old M180 flywheel on theOM617 ? Thanks ! Bill
Hi thanks I appreciate that! The OM617 does bolt straight to the mog box but i made a shim so the flywheel mounted in exactly the same place, as the tail of the crank is ever so slightly shorter (this may not have been necessary). I machined the counterweight from the back of the M180 flywheel as that engine is externally balanced and the 617 is internally balanced therefore needs a zero balanced flywheel…. As for the starter i had to custom make the bendix as i couldnt find one on a modern 12v small bodied starter that would work 😅 If you have instagram there are more detailed pictures there @_restomog

What are you going to do when you discover there will be no place for your passenger to put their feet? a proper conversion requires a rather expensive custom bell housing among other things.
Hi Craig Curious as to why you’ve had this trouble ? I have had no trouble with leg room as the body fitted straight back over ? Interested to see some pictures of your build 🤙🏻
you will need the pivoting; it is going to flex a lot wel you are off road.
Can you show how you mounted the flatbed to the unimog chassis? I am planning on building one soon but I want to make sure the chassis can still flex. I would buy one but they arent as plentiful as I hope in the states. Thanks man.

What did you use for the bulkhead behind the seats looks like the back of an old pickup ?
Hi Jake, we used the bulkhead from a Suzuki carry van.
You need to make the bed pivot on the original mounts or it will tear it apart with the flex! Well done for getting it going again dude
My worry as well - don't bolt it directly onto the frame :)

Did you end up using an adapter that clocks/rotates the engine? I assume not. Apparently the dowels are a different size between the 404 transmission and the 617? ...and starter to flywheel ring gear alignment is a concern it sounds like?
No I didn’t clock the engine any different to how it was as it didn’t seem necessary!? I made a spacer plate to space the fly wheel to the exact place it was on the original engine (as the end of the crank is ever so slightly longer) and yes the dowels are a different size so I machined some step dowels to maintain the original hole size on the gearbox….I did also find the starter to ring gear alignment was a problem, so I made my own starter bendix to fit on a newer style gear reduction starter which has worked a treat!

These things always take longer ;) Looking good though. You're not fitting the deeper oilpan and longer oilpump, for off-roading?
No I haven’t looked into anything like that yet! Just getting it running and stopping is enough for the minute😅 it the deep pan and pickup something that’s easy to get hold of? Cheers Thanks for watching 👍🏼
@@tomthesmart1 I had a friend who had one modified, not sure if they're available as is. The stock M180 engine has a deep oilpan for off-roading.
