Every year you have to separate the calf and cow so the cow can dry up. This is called weaning. The term dry up means to stop producing milk. Once they calf stops sucking milk from its mother the utters will stop producing milk after a few day.

So a couple questions. I think you mentioned real quick that you lease that pasture. How far is it from your house? Did you buy the tractor and the bush hog? Im having a hard time finding pasture for lease here in Louisiana.
Yes it is leased property. 10 miles away. I also paid to rent the tractor and bush hog. Check out a book called “thought and advice from a old cattleman “. It’ll explain a lot on how to start and survive in ranching.
As somebody who is trying to start ranching and didn’t inherit land, equipment or livestock, I certainly appreciate this video. I’d like to see some more like this.

Yes or use the 3 foot head flap on the bed roll to cover your head and pray to the good Lord the mosquito spray works!

Steve not sure what you’re referring to. I am using a calve rope in this video. It’s a soft rope.

When rolled up will it attach to the back of your saddle or is it too big?
It’s to big. Not saying that you couldn’t do it to get out of a pinch but I would recommend another pack horse.

Hay,BIG WES ,glad to see that you are still Ranchin. I've got a couple of stories about how those Powder River chutes about crippled my family. One time when moving the chute,it got dropped on my Mom's foot, 😢 then the same day while branding new cows, one of those side bars came unlatched and hit my Dad on the bridge of his nose, Out Cold ! It was a terrible day, OH and I forgot about Dad's horse falling down with him ,hurting his leg that had already been broken in another horse wreck. 😮😮 Have a Great Day 😊

Trying to decide between a Bivy bag and a Cowboy Bedroll. Do the same thing but do wonder what would be the most comfy a cold winter night here in Sweden. Great video!
My bedroll is kinda heavy but comfortable. Just keep that in mind about weight.

For the milk truch hose
If sleeping with wool next to your skin is uncomfortable, throw a regular bed sheet in the bedroll between you and the wool...problem solved.
Insane how far we've got. A modern sleeping bag + bivouac sac + mat is like 6 lbs total, and you're good 'till 20F. I know-I know, this one has more functionality, but throw in a 2 person tent and you're still well below a quarter of the weight.
You can bedroll for WAY less than 80lbs and I can assure you a fancy lightweight setup wont even come close to the comfort
@@lockgessner sure you can. The point was that compared to traditional materials like wool, linen or oilcloth, many modern synthetic materials have properties that almost seem like magic. Material science and industrialisation took us pretty far.
Depends what i a. Doing. I use a combination of military kit, blankets, sleap systems and sleeping bag you use for camping. I may put in bak of car if cold.

Great video. I use a similar bedroll from JM Capriola (not sure who makes it for them) and instead of a pillow, I put a pillow case up in the head area when I roll the bedroll up and stuff it with extra clothes at night for my pillow. I also have a 10x10 canvas teepee from Sheridan Tent and Awning...great company.
