I am using this channel to showcase my 78RPM (shellac) recordings, other vintage music, and landscape & wildlife videos. I no longer air political opinions here on TH-cam (instead I publish occasional opinion pieces on Substack). I enjoy Victorian / early 20th Century chamber music, brass bands, and traditional church music including campanology.
Rothesay Shellacs: Gilbert & Sullivan - Patience (medley)
#78rpm #gilbert #sullivan
So this is it - our last stop where the Rothesay Shellacs train terminates. And what a splendid musical number on which to finish our odyssey of old music records - an orchestral medley of tunes from Gilbert & Sullivan's comic opera, Patience / Bunthorne's Bride.
Columbia Records (78RPM) no.970. Court Symphony Orchestra.

#78rpm #gilbert #sullivan And so at the close of this long and productive year of 2024, we bid a fond farewell to the Rothesay shellacs. This is the first side of the last shellac disc (Columbia Records, no. 970), featuring an orchestral arrangement bearing some catchy melodies from Sir William Schwenck Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan's comic opera, The Gondoliers. Gilbert & Sullivan were the Beatl...
Rothesay Shellacs: La Boheme (medley)
มุมมอง 322 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
One of my favourite shellacs, this one by the long-defunct Broadcast Twelve features a medley of tunes from Giacomo Puccini’s great opera, La Bohème, set in the poor quarter of Paris during the volatile 1830’s. Performed by the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Stanley Chapple. Broadcast Twelve (78RPM) 5040-A, 1929.

We are now approaching the end of the Rothesay shellacs! This is the fourth-last instalment, a medley of tunes from the original Monsieur Beaucaire movie, the silent 1924 film which was remade with sound two decades later. Performed by the New Light Symphony Orchestra. HMV (78RPM) C1811.
Rothesay Shellacs: Fox trot - 'I Faw Down and Go Boom'
มุมมอง 287 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
There exist many variations of this ballad of the unfortunate young boy who falls off his horsey in the street. This particular musical arrangement was composed by James Brockman and Leonard A Stevens, and performed by George Olsen’s band. The original ‘I Faw Down’ song was authored and performed by Eddie Cantor, another New Yorker who was born into a Russian-Jewish immigrant family and rose to...

#Hylton #Kern #foxtrot This and the next shellac feature songs by the great New York songwriter Jerome Kern, whose most famous works include 'Ol' Man River' and 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes'. This more obscure ditty concerns a confident outgoing tomboy woman whose sunny temperament is the talk of the town - a subject which belongs to a much happier, innocent age. Jack Lynton and his Orchestra deliv...

#foxtrot #hylton Another fox trot performed by Jack Hylton and his Orchestra, featuring the song 'House on the Hill-top' by Mayeri (not to be confused with the well-known 'Mansion on the Hill-top'). Much to my frustration, I have not been able to source the lyrics for this older song. HMV (78RPM) B5628.

#foxtrot #hylton The first of four fox trot shellac records of Jack Hylton and his orchestra performing fox trots featuring songs which were popular during the interwar period, each with a brief vocal refrain. The Coronation March, similar to Handel’s Ombra Mai Fu (Largo) on the other side of this shellac disc (coming up), is a remnant of a largely forgotten opera, this one being Giacomo Mayerbeer’s five-part epic ’Le Prophete’ based on the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands. I am glad I live in a warm place with little rain, but you got nice scenery
A fine march in an opera with a gruesome ending . . . like Mussorgsky's "Khovanschina"! One wonders if there was a competition amongst mid-19th Century opera composers to see who could produce the goriest conclusion!
I Haven't been to Paisley in a long time, but I'm always a little sad to see what the town has become. It still has some beautiful old buildings, but much of the place is left to decay (like so many other Scottish towns) and the changing demographics make it less welcoming (again, the same as many other Scottish towns).
True. One has to be almost a professional photographer to sift and seek out the chinks of beauty amidst the gloom and deterioration.
@@standrean Indeed, much like life. I often view videos and photographs of old Britain to see what went before. It is more often than not a bittersweet experience. This is a charming little restored video of Scotland many moons ago:th-cam.com/video/Ya7mt9GT710/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
I want to visit UK as tourist maybe this summer, never been there
Heartbreaking news: last week our beloved cat was run over by a speeding car just outside the house. This is the FOURTH cat in our family that's been mowed down on a residential street these past few years. Is it any wonder that the dog owners round here keep their pooches locked indoors all day, and leave the poor creatures to bark insanely at the window all the day long whilst they're out at work. I cannot refrain from also saying that EV cars are some of the worst offenders, with way too much initial acceleration and torque.
By George, what have we here? It takes a skill indeed to go up and down the octave; myself a piano player decades old, I know all too well how challenging it is to play at this speed even with 45 keys. Accordion, concertina, harmonica -- they're all surely challenging and certainly require the 1000s of "man-hours" to master in their own ways! It pays to note that my late Nan was a Domina harmonica player and a maestro musician. Endearingly, as a child, I would watch her play the ole (what we call a Christmas Worm) just before Christmas and long after New Year's. I bet this one was of the smaller type? Some are humongous -- and here, the player is quite the avid musician, especially since the multi-dexterous cadences of his/her (I'm betting heads that's a male accordionist!) speaks well to years and years, if not decades, of practice. And it makes it all the more difficult to know you can't silently "cheat" when playing the odd notes of dissonance or discord -- even soft playing is rather noticeable. So, game on! Of equal mention are my French roots from both parents. Pure Anemoia, the nostalgia of a place I've never encountered. Hearing this is something arresting, in the spirit that says Welcome Home.
My sentiments also. Looking back now, I'm so glad I happened to be carrying my camera that same morning, such a remarkable coincidence that I could not resist pressing Record and enjoying the music on what was otherwise a rather dull journey through east Glasgow.
Happy cat. 😸
Oh so you're alive! Thank god, I was worried about you, people were saying you left this realm by your own hand. I'm just some complete stranger who remembered one of your vids from years ago and decided to search for your whereabouts. I'm so happy the rumors are false and you seem to have passions going on your life. I hope you continue find joy in life and continue to make the best of your days. All the best 👋
No worries, I've simply moved on, just like JustJames and GeorgesJournal have.
Missing your voice ....
Stay tuned - I intend to begin making videos reflecting on moral issues and post each one on a Sunday (but not every week, just now and then).
I think at the time when this was recorded, Elgar was deeply despressed. Because the premire of the piece was a flop. and he quoted on this topic. im paraphrasing "I opened my heart to the public once, and they wont let me have a decent hearing of my music, now my heart is now shut to all feeling". Like imagine putting your entire being into something, and it being brushed off like its nothing. That would tear out a mans soul/motivation/willpower.
I was hoping to make a pilgrimage to Requiem for a Fool (now I'm a 40-year-old virgin) as I believe that video greatly changed my life. But I understand why you removed your content. Thanks for all the vids over the years, they were a great comfort when I was in a very low place.
Glad to read that my videos were in some way beneficial. However, two years ago I made a conscious decision to purge all my personal videos describing my unemployment, social inadequacy and inceldom, not least because my nieces and nephews are now in high school and I don't want them being targeted on account of my online content. Obviously I'm still dateless and retain my V card, but frankly I've accepted that one cannot have everything in Life, that in many other aspects I am more fortunate than most people our generation.
I been thinking what if jesus AI is the second coming of Jesus. Like God could have directed human evolution to produce computer and ai and micro chips so that Jesus can return in a digital form.
Kamala or Trump???
What about them, could you elaborate?
@@standrean who do you think has the better economic plan, I think like kamala will increase the USA debt.
Trump! Though I'd prefer Ron Paul (or Rand actually).
i think the end times might come soon, so many things are collapsing around us hang on in there.
Hey Malcolm I am wondering what are thought on AI. I notice there lot of ai girlfriend being marketed toward men do you think this could change society for the better, this could be an interesting video.
I would stay clear of any AI chatbots - it's just the next level in online dating. Dodgy companies and crooks will charge exorbitant prices and in the end these fake conversations amount to time and money being poured down a digital black hole. As you know, AI girlfriends now exist in abundance and to access them costs the user a LOT of money.
@@standrean Some of them are free however. Would you get an AI or robot gf? I feel this could help men who struggle.
@@Agustinoism No, because it will never be the real thing. I've long accepted that romantic intimacy shall always be the one thing that is missing in my life. Incidentally, dating sites are apparently losing their corporate value as they lose customers who have become disgruntled with disappointing experiences, according to this article www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/article/2024/aug/17/dating-apps-decline-bumble-tinder
@@standrean I see well thanks for your input.
@@standrean I forgot to mention I know you are a big on religion. I am wondering what are your thought on this thing called "AI JESUS" like some created an AI chat bot and its like giving you the advice that jesus would give to his followers. Thoughts.

Sad but true.
I know you are retired from you tube but any though on the riots going on in England malcolm, who is to blame
This is where I have to show my three-quarters Scottish identity and admit that this appears to be an English problem which I cannot fully understand - although even I can see that the media are spinning narratives and jumping to their own conclusions quicker than gossiping office ladies. One thing I will say though is that 99 per cent of people resident in England have NOT rioted, have not participated in this civil unrest.

Hello. Where can I find those book reviews you made?
That's a very good question. Unfortunately, with the exception of the fourth series which I produced during the early months of 2021, I cannot restore these videos as they are replete with copyright-infringing music segments and borrowed imagery. These days I lack the time to reprocess these reviews satisfactorily.
