Creative Communities PODCAST: In Walsall with writer David Calcutt at the Creative Factory
Creative Communities PODCAST: In Walsall with writer David Calcutt at the Creative Factory
CBC Creative Advisor Laura chats to David who shares how he collaborated with the team at the Creative Factory and setting up a writing group.
The group led to participants taking part in live readings with audiences and a significant growth in creative confidence, as well as having an impact on David himself.
“People come along and maybe don’t write very much or haven’t written before, and they come out with a phrase that makes you gasp. You can’t put a price on that.
It’s always relearning that people can have so much to offer, and so much creativity to offer, if they are just given the opportunity. All it takes is a space, and someone who is willing to listen and give them the opportunity, and give them permission in a sense, and say 'look you can do this'."
The project was part by CBC's CREATIVE COMMUNITIES strand of support that helps people across the Black Country to co-design projects for people in the places they live.
Creative Communities is open right now for projects taking place in Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton.

Fantastic food and a great atmosphere. If I remember right, the vine was the first proper desi, Soho’s tavern and the grove. But the phoenix was the first Indian pub that I ever had samosas in back in the mid 70s, they served the lads who worked at the foundries in smethwick. Keep on keeping on gentlemen

I have studied this including newspapers back to the 1800s for three years and written a book about this. I was stunned to discover that the truth was the polar opposite of what so many think today. Dudley claims (wrongly) to be the traditional Capital, but the original references to the BC ALL refer to the Staffordshire section, with Dudley lying in Worcestershire back then. Despite common modern perception, which seems to think the BC was defined by accent strength (wrong), Dudley wasn't in the original BC, Wolverhampton was, except its western side like Tettenhall/Penn. This 'County-issue' for Dudley was even highlighted by the editor of the 'Dudley Chronicle' on 7 June 1913, and he confirmed this widely-established train of thought when he wrote:- "Some correspondence has taken place this week as to which town is the 'Capital of the Black Country'. The honour is claimed for Wolverhampton, but a writer has now also claimed it for Dudley. I don't think there will be too much quarrelling in Dudley. As a matter of fact, Dudley is by no means 'Black Country', although surrounded by it. Dudley too, is in Worcestershire while the generic term 'Black Country' has, I always understood, been taken to mean the iron and coal-producing fields of South Staffordshire. Dudley can afford to let that honour pass". Indeed, ALL the original references of the BC refer to the Staffordshire section only. Furthermore, Wolverhampton was widely considered its Capital back in the industrial revolution of the 1850s-1900 when the area really got its name. Wolverhampton and Bilston was the area with the worst smog due to its numerous large iron works, as viewed by famous writers at the elevated position of Dudley Castle. Wolverhampton, contrary to popular opinion , had numerous coal mines lying on its eastern side. Back in 1840, when the region was first called the 'Black Country', and contrary to popular opinion, it was actually the thin seam mining district and not the thick seam district that most damaged the environment, as the 'Morning Chronicle' reporter highlighted in 1850: - "The appearance of the land around Wolverhampton, Willenhall, Bilston, where the thin seams principally lie, is strange in the extreme. For miles and miles, the eye ranges over wide-spreading masses of black rubbish, and hills on hills of shale, and masking, as it were, the whole face of nature". Then in 1860, author Walter White viewed the area from Dudley Castle, remarking: - "Smoke prevails, rolling and drifting, blackest over the clusters of furnaces. Only on the west and south-west was there cleanliness. There lies Netherton, a place of heavy work. Wolverhampton is visible to the north-east and thereabouts the smoke is densest. If you look at Wolverhampton, you see a great deal of dusky roofs, of sluggish smoke, and tall chimneys, so numerous that to call them a forest is hardly a figure of speech". Charles Darwin even compared the black lava beach of a Pacific island to the 'iron furnaces of Wolverhampton' (not 'iron furnaces near Wolverhampton' as has been corrupted subsequently by 1960s BC Society historians). There are a lot of miss-truths and presumptions about the history of the BC, to a point that some people in Dudley think that Wolverhampton has no claim. The misinformation and misinterpretation of our great reason is staggering. Even here, on this thread, one commentator is stating "Wolverhampton is in the BC now". WRONG - it always was, but if anything some of it less so since 1937 when a few of its politicians first suggested otherwise, "Wolverhampton is of the BC but not in it", a reflection of its then split appearance and geographical position on the edge. But traditionally it was, before Tettenhall and Penn were amalgamated. The lack of real knowledge of the original BC leads to a widespread misunderstanding of our great region. I implore people to go and study newspaper archives and read historic books, or alternatively just lazily believe current false perceptions.
