History of Photography: 4. Sir John Herschel by Vladimir Khazan Scientist Polymath Sir John Herschel
Sir John Herschel, son of Mary Pitt and British astronomer William Herschel, was born in Slough, Buckinghamshire, England in 1792. He was multitalented: math, astronomy, natural sciences, and music.
1839: Coined terms photography, negative, and positive .
1839: Made a photograph on glass
1842: Invented cyanotype (iron) blueprints.
Experimented with photosensitive emulsions of vegetable juices, called phytotypes (plants) aka anthotypes (flowers), and published his discoveries in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London in 1842.
Sir John Herschel, Baronet:
Applied the terms negative, positive, and emulsion to photography.
1819: Discovered sodium thiosulfate to be a solvent of silver halides, experimentally applied it in early 1839.
Informed Daguerre and Talbot of his discovery that "hyposulphite of soda" ("hypo") could be used as a photographic “fixer”, to make pictures permanent.
1839:Herschel invented sensitized paper and glass processes.
Made the first glass negative.
1842: Created phytotypes - colorized images -“ Vegetable Photographs”.

Sir John Frederick William Herschel, 1st Baronet KH FRS (/ˈhɜːrʃəl, ˈhɛər-/;[2] 7 March 1792 - 11 May 1871)[1] was an English polymath, mathematician, astronomer, chemist, inventor, experimental photographer who invented the blueprint,[3][4][5] and did botanical work.[6]
Herschel originated the use of the Julian day system in astronomy. He named seven moons of Saturn and four moons of Uranus - the seventh planet, discovered by his father Sir William Herschel. He made many contributions to the science of photography, and investigated colour blindness and the chemical power of ultraviolet rays. His Preliminary Discourse (1831), which advocated an inductive approach to scientific experiment and theory-building, was an important contribution to the philosophy of science.[7]

This presentation is about Thomas Wedgwood, one of the photography pioneers. He lived in XVIII-XIX centuries, and was the first to use chemicals to develop images from camera-obscura. Thomas communicated with famous and advanced people of the time: James Watt, Humphry Davy, his family was related to Charles Darwin's family, who was his nephew.

Giving the Miranda points for optical design doesn't make much sense when you clearly chose the Olympus over the Miranda on performance.

I’ve got a Canon TL QL and I’m curious to know which lenses I can use. I’m new to all this film talk and I have no idea what anything means lol I do know I have a 50mm lens on it now very similar to the 2nd lens you talked about. Which mounting systems can I use or should I look for when trying to buy lenses?

Caroline Herschel was also one of the first woman who got public and peer recognition for work in science. And in her own right, not just as assistant to her brother and his son. It's amazing how many topics "natural philosophers" in that era covered. Another fascinating example, same era is Benjamin Franklin who gets (today) way too little credit for his science work (copley medal and FRS too). Later they really had to specialize because scientific topics had become to complex for "polymaths". also bit and pieces i remember: the 40 foot telescope was a bit of a PR stunt, it never was much use, being at the absolute edge of the technology. W. Herschels slightly smaller ones were his master pieces (literally the best you could buy). The "Sir for William is a bit shaky, because it had something to do with Hannover and was some sort of foreigner level knighthood. John Herschels is a real one. Because he's such a towering figure in astronomy and science, nobody probably much questioned it.

7:34 No offense intended, but the notion of the Nicéphore Niépce photo taking eight hours to expose was an assumption made in the mid 20th century - it was just a guess. A French researcher working from Niépce's notes and copying his methods has shown the exposure time was several DAYS. Other people who have attempted to create heliographs have had the same results. Best wishes from Vermont ❄️

Absolute nonsense, those grey ones are for supporting Lens glass for cleaning and they are too slippy to use for removing lens rings etc, if they are already loose they'll work but have no grip whatsoever....Wrong tool for the wrong job.. The Black ones are sticky for a reason.

I have a 50mm fd f1.4 ssc lens which I've had for 45 or 46 years. I used it a lot on my Canon AE-1 Program film camera for a long time. I recently bought an adapter so I can mount the lens on my new Canon DSLR camera body with a EF lens mount. Of course you have to set the aperature manually and focus manually as well, but it's cool being able to use it on my EOS Rebel T7 camera and I've had no mounting or unmounting issues with it.

The characteristics chosen for comparison are so vaguely defined and evaluation so subjective that I'd have to class this as entertainment rather than a technical comparison. I was a bit surprised that the Miranda lens seems to do as well as claimed. The Olympus lens has the advantage of nearly 20 years of improvements in glass types and coatings, plus the age of the Miranda means that it probably was designed by tradition hand-calculation methods as opposed to compute assisted design for the Oly. In fact, Miranda never designed or built it own lenses. It built only the bodies and accessories, sub-contracting its lenses to the third-party Japanese lens makers of the day. Apart from the Miranda branded lens, only Soligor made an extensive line of lenses with MIranda mounts, branded Soligor-Miranda. They were generally not as good as the "Miranda" lenses, but decent performers. In their day, the MIranda bodies were technically more advanced than most of its major competitors, and they were just as expensive. For example, MIranda was one of the first makers to adopt fully interchangeable viewing systems, including TTL metering cross coupled to aperture and shutter, at a time when Nikon was having trouble fitting a regular meter on the Nikon F, and Canon and Pentax offered no integrated metering at all. However, with developments, other makers started introducing smaller, more compact bodies with electronic controls. MIranda was too small and cash poor to pay for the development costs to keep up with the big dogs. After one troubled effort to enter the then-new market of small, automatic SLRs with its DX-3 model, MIranda closed its doors around 1975 after 20 years in the business.
