“God has given us music so that above all it can lead us upwards. Music unites all qualities: it can exalt us, divert us, cheer us up, or break the hardest of hearts with the softest of its melancholy tones. But its principal task is to lead our thoughts to higher things, to elevate, even to make us tremble… The musical art often speaks in sounds more penetrating than the words of poetry, and takes hold of the most hidden crevices of the heart… Song elevates our being and leads us to the good and the true…”

I’ve been inspired by this man for 39 years, and now I’ve finally had the honor of seeing him live. God Bless Billy Bragg.

I see a decent number of shows, and I have to say this was the best crowd I’ve been a part of in years - almost no crowd chatter. That’s the way it should be, in my opinion.

Omg its still so beautiful
Found this track by accident, now on my favourite play list
This version originated with American folksinger Jean Ritchie, who was about to sue Bob Dylan for cribbing it's melody and chords for his "Masters Of War," but Dylan's management quickly settled with her for $1000 USD -- a fairly grand sum back in the 1960s. FWIW, I've been playing it since long before Andrew and Emily were born. 😎
I'm a big fan of Fairport Convention and love their version of this traditional tune. Like this spare performance.
Jean Ritchie's version is haunting.
@@myradioon -- Ms. Ritchie originated this particular arrangement and retained the Appalachian substitution of the fictional "Nottamun" for the original and actual locale of Nottingham in the English Midlands.
@@editorjuno And the original was about a rider who has to pass through English towns during The Plague. People didn't know where it came from so people wouldn't even make eye contact. And or people were so close to death they couldn't acknowledge you. The Horse in the song doesn't even want to continue.
Sounds almost exactly like masters of war.
I believe MOW was based on it.
Dylan took the traditional English melody like he did for many of his songs. This song was about The Plague.
I love the Denver Botanical Gardens! So beautiful.
They keep getting better don't they? The sound quality of your live room recording is better than most! Thank you for sharing.
@@ericsuiter7619So, so good live. Thank you! This was a small, outdoor lawn show, and the sound was excellent, especially for a duo performance.

Saw her in Atlanta. Flew in from Daytona Beach
Great performer, and she draws an excellent crowd!
How have I never seen this??
Her best rendition yet. Holy shit!❤
Yeah, she’s belting it now. She just put out this, if you hadn’t seen. I have to track down the whole video. facebook.com/share/r/zDxHPATFjQ6wcAfP/?mibextid=WC7FNe
Hehe, what do you think sent me your way? 😉
Still the best version of this song. Glad to see it back online. One of the best songs ever written. Seriously.
The yanking the right earpiece is allllllll the way back to 'Unwed Fathers'
I can’t believe Sarah is coming to Houston on the same night as Molly Tuttle😢. We go for weeks without a good show, imo, and now I have to choose between 2 great acts. It’s not fair I tell you
Yeah, Mighty Poplar was in town the same night and I found out pretty late. I had presale SJ tix for Denver. I would have gone to SJ in Boulder (sold out early) and seen both had I known.
She did really good 👍 lucky for those who listened the live 🔥
Thanks neat venue for her
If you’re a fan, Greensky put out a great video of this performance.
Thanks for filming & posting this performance.
Not bad at all!!!
go elizabeth fraser
weird she's done this cover several times it seems, per YT
@@Musicarbs I think Live From Here was the first, and that band… (Huge Liz fan here.)
Mountain songbird
sure glad she survived....
Amen. She’s so phenomenally great. Seeing her in a few days for the the third time, and again later in the summer. ❤
🎉🎉 One of a kind.
Sierra has it dialed in....and its fascinating to watch her continue to dial it in...such talent
the cat in the red hat with the electric guitar brought it to a new level imo
That’s writer/producer Josh Kaufman of BLH. Yeah, I think even Andrew was a bit surprised if you watch him. 😄
Phone was capturing the ambience really really good!!!
Thanks. Yes, the crowd at this show was particularly awesome.
Love this
Emily has a nice very clear voice
I just glad i turned my phone on.i would have missed this great sounding music
Awsome
Beautiful, hope they play this in Telluride!
One of the most amazing songs by The Chicks!
I love Mandolin Orange / Watchhouse but Lord, to use Emmylou Harris' talent soooo sparingly is practically criminal
Sometimes the understated has its own beauty. Also... Emmylou clearly is confident letting Emily sing lead.
Emmylou was headlining, but this was Emily’s dedication. (The two were actually humbled and nervous to be her “backup band.”😊)
Absolutely beautiful and wonderful! I would love to see Emmylou perform this song in Telluride.
LOVE!!!!!!
Love everybody's way of making us high, thanks
Sublime.
This is incredible
Thanks for this, lovely version by my favorite musicians.
My pleasure. They’re often all I want to listen to. 🧡
Wow! Amazing and a great honor to share the stage with Emmy. Congratulations to Emily and Andrew! You guys were, and are wonderful.
I love that Emmylou always gives credit to Gram Parsons and keeps his memory and his songs alive. And of course I love her voice and songwriting! ❤️
A fine Radney Foster tune
Okay I admit the dresses are weird, but we love this girl.
Thanks for sharing, Emmy
You're a Guitarist, too, aren't you? ;D
haha I pretend to be.. (if I had that blue one of his, I'd be much more motivated!) Thanks.
