BASELINE019 - Brave New World - Huw Jones on Agentic AI, Trust, and Humanity’s Future
Huw Jones is a visionary leader and the Head of Intelligent Product in Financial Services, where he is driving transformative applications of artificial intelligence in financial services. With a career rooted in military discipline and a deep understanding of technology, Huw blends technical expertise, a human-centric philosophy, and business acumen to create AI systems that prioritise empathy, trust, and incremental improvements in daily life.
His focus on agentic AI and the integration of conversational memory is redefining how technology interacts with the material world, ensuring that AI remains grounded in ethical and practical applications. Huw’s commitment to truth, trust, and human values is shaping a future where AI enhances rather than replaces human interactions.
In this episode of the BASELINE podcast we explore the transformative power of agentic AI in the built world. Drawing from his military background and expertise in AI, Huw dives into key topics such as:
• The evolution of conversational AI and reinforcement learning through human feedback (RLHF).
• How empathy and memory are reshaping AI-driven customer interactions.
• The ethical implications of passing decisions to AI systems and ensuring trust.
• The balance between pragmatic AI applications and avoiding nefarious misuse.
Huw shares his vision for AI’s role in enhancing daily life, the challenges of integrating AI into financial services, and why a “race to the top” is essential for the future of AI.
Stay tuned until the end, where Huw addresses the big question: AI Utopia or Dystopia?

What an absolute idiot. "With chances are they won't" 😂😂😂 yeah you keep living in la la land
No because as a white man this has nothing to do with you It will disproportionately it affects coloured people and minorities because that's how it always goes.
Except our fine motor skills, the skill that changed earth.
ai brings uncertainty which if it makes a mistake and spitts out a big number where a small number had to be the bank could lose money. bank don't want that so this will never happen.
Zuk announcing he’s getting rid of human fact checkers last week to appease/cosy up to Presidente Chump was super disappointing. Hate the way this is heading. Had hoped we had turned the page on those dark days of 1930s propaganda campaigns of mis/disinformation. Dark days ahead. 1st amendment rights do NOT include lies/fraud) The brakes are about to come off the crazy train completely.
Reminds me of those dolls they used to have with gravitational eyes that closed when they were laid down. Her eyes look like they are on hinges lol
We will improve the AI model each episode so you can see how fast the technology is evolving!
Fear of AI destroying humanity like skynet? Either impossible to happen or impossible to stop, so no point worrying about it. Fear of AI allowing corporate greed to concentrate even more unimaginable wealth at the top 0.0001% and making vast sections of society redundant and unable to work, but society not catching up to the realisation that capitalism is becoming more and more broken and it's the majority of people who will suffer with unemployment and unemployability? Thats the real worry
How do we avoid this scenario?
ONCE WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO WORK WITH A GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS LIKE HIM WHO FORMED A N INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION ADVISORY. WE PRESENTED MANAGEMENT AND LABOR ON TEA AND SHARING IDEAS TO ICREASE EFFECIENCY. OUR GREATEST TASK WERE THE ESTABLISHED MANAGEMENT, WJO FOUGHT CHANGE FROM WORKERS ESPECIALLY. management is not innovative, inner politics rule,Ideas for change need to come from outside an organization.
why I want to check it?
You are essentially giving consent for your content to train 3rd party AI. However as someone has pointed out- Google are not technically a 3rd party so you will be training their AI platform on you content even if you uncheck the box.
@BaselineAI nice... thanks
Two dudes discussing gunpowder:
Yeah and it says 3rd party.. so you can untick it, and that will stop 3rd party companies using your content, but it won’t stop Google. Because Google owns TH-cam, therefore it’s not a 3rd party company..
Where can content be published with the full ownership retained by the creator? Feels like a blockchain architecture! And even I want to roll my eyes at that.
Very good observation. Any proprietary platform will be the same- LinkedIn, Spotify etc.
@BaselineAI that’s true but TH-cam has the video content platform sewn up.. billions of videos..
Did I just wake up in 2015? 😂
You wish!!
Humans can't handle it, so maybe super intelligent AI can handle it.
I live a Lego Kit type custom eco house. I envisage a future where all electrical & plumbing connectors etc are modular - mainly for ease of assembly & replacement by robots. Out-swapped units could be taken away for repair or recycling.
Interesting question. …
Look at the destruction caused by nano particles in MRNA vaccines.
Behind invisible bars, goverment control of every aspect of your life is truly terrifying
I think the average person nowadays doesn't open random emails. Who is clicking on an email and then buying something? 90 year olds. So it's just people scamming the elderly lol. I see so many AI ads now that are literally just tools for cheating in school. It literally instructed kids to "find an essay online and ask grammarly to re-write it in your style!" That's literally getting the AI to write your essay for you. How is that not cheating? I feel like the next generation of kids are gonna be dumb as rocks because they learned nothing in school because they just asked grammarly for the answers. You said you get 150 emails a day. They have an ad for that too. Summarizing emails for you and taking your email and running it through a thesaurus. Changing "hey can you call me when you get a minute please?" To "it is crucial you communicate with me on this issue." Those two are not the same. It's adding a serious tone. I feel as though if I sent someone a 3 paragraph email and they used an ai to summarize it in 2 sentences.. I'm pretty sure they lost the soul of my email. Then they generate an ai response back, so not only do they have no real idea of what I said in the email, they don't even know what they sent back! If you can't find the time to read my email or email me back yourself, what's the point of using email at all?
Email is far too spammy and anything of any value is lost…
Ev lasts for 2 years? what the guy is driving 100k miles a year or something?
The average lifespan of an electric vehicle is around 5 to 10 years, then the batteries degrade. The owner usually buys a new one, instead of replacing the batteries, as the cost of a replacement battery pack can be 1/2 to 3/4 the price of the vehicle. Meaning there are 100's of thousands of electric vehicles in junkyards. While a fossil fulled vehicle basically becomes "Carbon Neutral" after about 15 years as you can keep them going replacing parts until the frame rots out.
Nope. Because nobody will buy from a robot
It reflects what its been trained on. Simple. Its not interesting results, its normal expectations if its trained on most of the text on the internet.
1 to 2 years. This guy must be joking right? I still need to spend hours prompting chatgpt 4.o to do simple tasks, writing basic scripts, giving me the write information, etc. This stuff is miles off from being able to replace huams. Everyone talks about how great this stuff is, when actually it's just a clever google search with some neat code writing and language tools. Furthermore, i can tell with great accuracy when someone has used a LLM to write an email. The day a company uses LLM to send all their emails is the day i to elsewhere. Sensationalist crap from this guy.
Nice vid, now wondering Is there’s any more data on LLM hallucinations and persuasion - specifically on different models.
There's LOTS. The metric is called Perplexity, and as far as persuasion, that's part of the prompt, and the metric for bias is called "alignment". There's plenty of charts comparing LLama, Qwen, Nemo, Mistral, etc.
Thanks to the amazing Seb Weir - see his baseline here: th-cam.com/video/pDiJ5EqKkSc/w-d-xo.html There’s quite few out there that assess the comparative performance and identify risks of hallucinations, I would suggest either the HELM index from Stanford or the Granite white Paper that considered a variety of markers: crfm.stanford.edu/helm/ www.ibm.com/downloads/documents/us-en/10a99803c92fdb35
Really good questions. I wonder what the answers could be!
The people in cripto have nowen this for twelve years trump would be better using cardarno it's better and more honest than aney other crypto pear reviewed Tek ripples is masivley centralised which is bad cardarno is very decentralised which is in alignment with the concept of bitcoin cardarno is more compatible
Thanks for your comment! Is Cardano set up for compliant international cross border payments?
Not everyone needs to have a podcast fellas
started to share how you use AI to be lazy...
People can make souless brands too, braindead video
Well said! Do you think AI will enable more consistency in the quality of output? Have you seen the recent developments in midjourney and runway?
This is like saying why would you want a hand painted painting versus a printed painting
Great point! Do you think there could come a time when AI-generated art rivals, or even surpasses, that 'hand-painted' authenticity and depth?
That Scottish guy is so damn handsome. Mind you I wouldn't want to get caught pinching his ciders
Am amazing discussion, nearly fell off my seat a few times. When's the next podcast I need another fix?
Subscribe for weekly releases! So pleased you enjoyed it - thank you!
bro's about to cry
Ha ha ha!
This is just the beginning!
Nup. It's neither. We have no AI and nothing currently that could become one. GPT is not AI. LLM is not AI. LDM is not AI. They aren't specialised AI. They'll never become specialised AI. They'll never become general AI either. They're a funny little party trick that's been going on and getting better since the 70s. Utopia isn't a real thing. We already live in a dystopia. Hypothetical future AI has nothing to do with making either.
Agreed on the point that LLM’s and their sophisticated use of language makes us feel the responses are more intelligent than they actually are.
Capitalism doesn't worry about these existential problems or even about its own long term existence. The way the world is set up, If money can be made, it will be made, if something being made to be sold can be sold at a higher price it will, if it can be made at a lower price it will. Anyone who goes against this idea will be out competed by those who do comply with this ideology. When it comes to AI, its like the motherload of making products and production costs lower, problem with it is the work that AI is replacing by process of extreme devaluation isn't providing any avenue for this work to be transformed into something else. Businesses are going to jump on any chance at lowering their costs using AI, problem is that when enough businesses do this its going to disrupt the balance of work and cashflow in the world economies. Theses going to be the people who own and control all of the AI which equates to hundreds of thousands of human workers and theres going to be those who don't have any and have no hope to compete with those that do. There is an extreme wealth divide already but its going to become more extreme and more defined though the implementation of AI within companies, there will be mass unemployment and a stagnation in cashflow. Those who have the wealth will suck it all up and lock it all away.

Dude, what are you even trying to say? Absolute waffle.
Thanks for your feedback! What part did you find unclear? Your input helps me improve!
i agree i dont like the capitalisation of AI in general, ive been looking at temporal fusion transformers for timeseries but i bet the big investment corps have amazing timeseries transformers, we only get to see academic papers
The switch from non-profit to profit for OpenAI makes me uncomfortable. Then this AGI claim point to exit the Microsoft contract compounds my concern.
@@BaselineAI Yeh nah, even if we conceded that the language aspect of our thoughts were a function of pattern recognition and learned behaviour we still have all the other executive functions to iron out. Its possible that some other attention like mechanism trained soley on logic overlaying or interacting with the weights at inference might start looking like it though.
@@BaselineAI oops wrong reply, yeh it doesnt smell right doing a switch like that and overhyping the product to the degree they have Atleast deepmind released alphafold2 to the public
I need to spend more time looking at Deepmind - it doesn’t have the marketing engine at they have at OpenAI
i feel like we do have an understanding about how gpt works, transformer model via parallel self attention mechanism find vectorised relationships between tokens and sets of tokens in higher dimensions which is refined through RLHF giving the base weights?
Totally - weighted vectoring based on training data to generate natural language or other media types in multi-modal models is understood - however, human intellect or the equivalent artificial technology - Artificial General Intelligence surely is more than language?
Yeah! U can do that. But that’s not the real world. U r delusional
Good to try and orientate yourself around success though!
Hat doesnt fit you 👍
What hat should I wear for the next one?
Brother that hat don’t fit
😂 gonna need a bigger hat
Agreed. Beware of organisations just adopting this tech not thinking about consequences.
There are huge socio-political consequences of AI - and regulation is lagging behind. We hope these 'utopia or dystopia' conversations are useful and helpful!
Let us know if there are any people or areas of discussion you would like to focus on...
I have 6 kids 19 to 30 all in jobs in high end pay 60/40 split on university none of them have any interest in politics and only the two oldest have a good basic understanding of global affairs
Dystopia ofc. Well utopia for those who already have lots of money and are on the upper parts of companies. But dystopia for the actual world. When it happend is another thing but. AI will start taking work away from people. And the more advanced it gets or the more different specialized AI we can get. The more work will be taken over by machines. Some people will argue that people will just get money from the government or whatever and just walk around doing nothing all day. Buuuuut 1. IF thats the case. Then the people that arent working will most likely recive some kind of bare minimum. You know, afford the day to day but not anything special or luxurious. Unlike those few chosen who still has work 2. Most likely that wont happen. Since most comapnies arent government owned and most companie owners are happy to earn more profit. Best outcome there would be that the products made gets their cost lowered. But really, most companies wouldnt lower their costs. So yeah. Dystopia. Regardless. Since either will create an even clearer line between people with money/work and without. And push more people below it. Only like company owners or people with money in investments. Or similar things. Will think that AI will bring utopia.
Our upcoming show talks about how humans have had the ability to destroy themselves many times - and yet we still prevail. There has always been an unequal distribution of wealth - do you think AI can augment and empower in a way that it will address that imbalance? Stay positive and like and subscribe! Thank you for your comments.
@LighthouseTechnology Im sure AI will do many improvements and for a while bring a lot to humanity. But in the end its all about profit. And it will always be cheaper to just get rid of the humans and use AI/robots that can work 24/7 with non to minimal interaction So it will go from improvements to "they take all our jobs" Then humans will start doing stuff for AI and Robots. Like study to make inprovements and become repair/maintenance staff. Until someone makes a robot that can improve and/or do the maintenance. All we really need is to want profit and advancement enough. To make it possible for computers/robots to improve and maintain themselves. Which we will do sooner or later. For efficiency (profit) Then those positions won't need humans either. It all will come to that dystopian thing. Where only the rich will have money and nice things. While everyone else will be jobless, live on welfare (making the rich feel even more important). Maybe some of the rich will employ human "servants", more as a novelty than actual need. Keeping the poor more as breeding stock for the rich. To keep the DNA good. The other version. Making AI/robots so intelligent that they come to the conclusion that humanity is the reason why earth is "dying" and the solution is to send skynet robots to kill everyone. Is less likely. But forcing humanity into smaller "settlements" for humanities own good. And shuffle the populations around every few generations to keep he genes health. Is slightly more likely than the eradication of humanity
Is there a ‘protopia’ where humans and machines can co-exist in harmony? If there is, how do we get there?
And who are you exactly?
I’ve been working in technology since the late 90s- building the systems that run the infrastructure, organisations and governments that now make up the very fabric of our society. I am now thoughtful and reflective on how it has changed our society in such a short time - as AI emerges, I want to learn as much as I can and share those learnings with you! Please like and subscribe! (I hope you like our music intro!)
Fascinating discussion. Thanks for sharing more on LLM and its limitations and where we need to go next interacting with historical data and real-time.
Thank you!
