Show notes by Dr. Tim:
48:00 This immediate sense of what is right is covered in Gladwell's Blink...
19:00 One reason I love watching Downton Abbey, is that it presents a society in which all classes participate in Cosmos in some way; there is an intense aesthetic quality in the homes of the poor and the rich, in the clothes of the poor and the rich. One has the sense that everyone clearly belongs, in their way. Admittedly, this is harder to sustain as you enter an era of cheap mass production, which also has its own upside. But it's more than that - there is no Cosmos without sacrifice, and in a world that at least remembers aristocratic virtues, the spirit of long-suffering often lends dignity and integrity to all classes and all walks of life.
34:00 - In Systems of Survival, Jane Jacobs makes an attempt at designing a social ethics for civilization, and winds up reviving the old tripartite social vision that prevailed everywhere until the modern period (or even later). For her, artists belong to the "Third Force," and they are not motivated by money directly. The Third Force is the realm of "art, gift, or love" according to Jacobs.
44:00 - What I meant to say, is that the Holy Elder is trained not to insist on his word, even when he knows it was spoken in the Spirit. This is what St. Sophrony taught, because he said that it was part of the humility of the elder, to allow that he could be mistaken even in such moments...
54:00 Why does purified intuition + purified conscience = (or almost equal) discernment? Because the first is a central aesthetic sense, the second a central moral sense. And in general, Beauty + Goodness = Truth (or at least paves the way for the attainment of Truth).
