Congratulations!!! Well done.
Your riden middle of the 7 N n 14 north , on west line few miles North or south along westal direction on May find more wind .
Wow! You were here in Fogo? I wish I knew, I live across the harbor from the Fish plant. I own the 27' Mirage sailboat, that was tied up to the dock. I sailed her from Whitby Ontario to Fogo in 2021, it was a great experience and adventure! Where are you now? Stay safe from Fogo Island, Newfoundland!
First channel I have seen where someone talks about the psycological affects of being alone and tired, not just relavant to sailing, but to life .... very honest and real vidoes.
Subbed in the first 30 seconds! I love the rawness of this video…thank you!
A great video! Some advice.....I wouldn't be that close to those icebergs, if they break and roll over, you wouldn't have a chance! It happened to us while fishing. We were pulling our cod nets, getting closer to iceberg, about a mile away when it broke apart and rolled over. We threw the net overboard and ran away from the 6' wave and the ice coming towards us! I decided to turn into the wave, instead of it coming over the stern. Good thing, the wave was 6' high and the ice bits were running past the boat like a river! Very scary at the time. You don't know the dangers it can cause, until it's too late. Also with a sailboat you don't have the speed to get away fast enough! Believe me I know! I live on the east coast of Canada in iceberg alley! Just some good advice! Take care and safe sailing!
As always a great vlog mate. One life Live it
Awesome 😎
Wow great video.
Thanks Andrew 😁
Cracking video Mark, what a wonderful place to explore by boat. I had a very memorable stop off in Nuuk while working on an offshore vessel. We climbed the highest peak adjacent to the city in trainers (mountaineering boots & crampons would have been more appropriate) and the views were spectacular! It's surreal that such a small city is the capital, with around 18,000 population and no roads going in or out. Beautiful, pristine country. Send my best regards to Rhys. God bless and fair winds, Chris 👍 p.s. We share the same surname. :-)
Thanks Chris! It's a really spectacular country for sure. We couldn't believe the lack of roads, boat and helicopter being really the only ways to get around. Interesting, looks like the comments section is 90% Barr so far 😁
Love the non melodramatic commentary while you do dramatic stuff.
Thanks Anne! 😄
3 times you promised hot springs and not 1 hot spring was seen. 1 star
Lol there were small children in it all day so couldn't video. It was not massively hot but hotter than the sea
@SoloSailingSapphira okay I suppose that's a good enough excuse 🤣🤣🙈🙈
It's on the onlyfans
@SailingYachtZora 🤣🤣🙈🙈
You are made of steel, thus very impressive. I am generally a loner, an introvert but there are limits. I would not have wanted to do an extended voyage like yours without a competent sailor wife. Ya, I'm married. But, great chanel. I am enjoying it. I have done my fair share of coastal sailing at night, one, two or three days between anchorages. What I don't understand about solo sailors crossing oceans, is that you and almost every other soloist sleeps at night and is awake during the day. Any emergency at night is going to be worse than the same emergency during daylight. You probably have AIS but not all other boats have AIS, certainly rogue logs and errant shipping containers do not. And then there are possible wind changes, rigging and through hull issues. It just seems to me it would be safer to be awake at night and nap during the day. But, you were the one who did it and lived, so what are your thoughts?
Hi Greg thanks for watching and for the kind words. I do end up sleeping a lot at night when far offshore, my body just seems to fall into that rhythm. It's more pleasant being on deck during the day, and when you're down below, if you're not cooking or eating you might as well be sleeping. When far offshore the chance of hitting a boat without AIS seem pretty slim to me, and the chance of seeing a log or shipping container even during the day while keeping a normal lookout seem vanishingly small in the typical offshore swell, let alone at night. I sleep as much as I can day and night, but as I say, when I really need to catch up on sleep, nothing beats that time between midnight and sunrise, my body just seems to crave unconsciousness around then. I have once fallen asleep while waiting for a wind shift around then and ended up going in the wrong direction for 4 hours, but apart from that nothing bad happened while asleep. The ocean is vast. As I say, thanks for the thoughtful comment
Question. What’s the largest boat you can sail solo? (I know bugger all about sailing!). 🫡🇬🇧
Thank you very much for the donation Leon! A lot depends on how the boat is set up and your appetite for work and risk. I've heard people say up to 42 foot, no problem, over that, more difficult. But people single hand 70+ foot racing yachts around the world non stop, so it's possible, but it becomes more of an athletic and sailing skill issue
@ Thank you. Where are you now?
@@Leonwhu73 I'm in Sligo on the North West coast of Ireland. Sapphira is in Galway, and I've bought another boat, Williwaw, in the South of France. I just got back from my first short cruise on Williwaw, excited to do some more of that.
Wow the whale footage
Dear friend, it happened to me too ..and I did something like that
That was awesome 😎 congratulations 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎉 And to my previous question of dates, i got ghe answer here, December you crossed. We doing it end of january im calculating 💪🏼🌎⛵🏴☠️⚓❤️🍻
Watching part 2 here 💪🏼 What day and month did you leave Mindelo ? Well done M8 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hi, how did the Aries wind vane behave ? I have one, never used it still (only sailed the boat by wind 1 week) and late January we cross the Atlantic if plans go to plan 🙏🏻❤️⛵🏴☠️⚓🌎
how much sailing experience do you need to do something like this?
Single handed, on your own boat, a fair bit. There's a lot of years of preparation that go into getting a boat ready for the passage, and in that time you'll be doing a lot of coastal sailing to see what works and what doesn't.
Living the dream right there. Saw Zora return down the North Channel off the Mull of Kintyre when we were out training on the Lifeboat. Great achievement, congratulations to all.
That's awesome, thanks for the hard work you lads and ladies put in. We felt a great sense of security once we got back in RLNI range!
Congratulation
Amazing
Oh Mark, this is an especially lovely video. There's something so romantic and mysterious to me about high-latitude sailing, and this video captured it: the harshness, the isolation, but also the seemingly untouched raw natural beauty. An adventure of a lifetime, to be sure.
Great video Rys. Which of you mad buggers went swimming amongst the ice?
That would be Mark the nutter
Haha that was me (Mark). Not as horrible as you might think
The Crazy Son of a B!t(h, You Did It
Sitting in the marina in Greystones with the crew go Zora and you dropped this WOW. Great photography.
Thanks, the credit for the nice shots goes to Rhys, great drone footage. Great that you're hanging out with the lads!
Such epic memories with the best crew a fella could ask for. Absolute legends
Thanks mate, an amazing trip 😁
Stunning😎
Cheers Paul!
Thanks for coming back missed you, stunning icebergs.
Thanks Richard 😁
Congratulations!
Well done! Have not followed all your videos so, what size and type of yacht is she. Looks like a Contessa. What wind vane steering do you have. Fair wind and weather!
Thanks Brian! She's a Halmatic 30, not dissimilar to the contessa. Long keel but with transom hung rudder. My wind vane is an Aries.
Nice boat. Don't know what it is but I see a wind generator there (AND its mounted where you can actually service it while under sail). Do you have any solar? Coupla things I noticed.. Tiller steering maybe this is a long keeled boat (lotta ocean crossing cruisers are... safer). I don't see any solar though. And NO spinnaker those things are nothing but a pain in the ass. Also noticed that you're mostly on a reach.
Thanks Lee. I do have a small solar panel, 100w, that and the wind gen kept me mostly topped up in windy west Indies anchorages, and underway in the tropics. Was tight enough for power as I got further north. She's a Halmatic 30, long keeled.
How’s Meabh mark It’s chloe
Thanks for watching Chloe!
Brilliant again, some of those waves looked scary!
Thanks Paul, yeah coming in to the Azores was intense enough!
Brilliant man, can hardly imagine what it must feel like to do this!
Cheers again, yeah it was one of the best feelings 😁
Love this, be great if there was a chronology (or playlist) so we could follow the entire Transatlantic voyage in sequence? thanks
I did put all these in a playlist, should be under my channel page and playlists, solo sailing Sapphira all videos
@@SoloSailingSapphira thanks Mark will check it out!
Epic trip man, massive respect! Looking forward to following you on future voyages, best of luck!
what exactly was the departure point?
I set off from Baltimore Co Cork, Paul. Good departure point for Spain as you can cross the shelf in deeper water than further east
Congrats on the new boat
Thanks very much Ian
This is my absolute dream mate 😍
Tried contacting you on instagram.......did you see the Halmatic?
Apologies Denis, don't know if you got me in the end. Another Halmatic in Galway?
Gorgeous boat, lovely form, great adventures new await!
What brand/type of boat is this?
She's a Halmatic 30, long keel sloop
Sinead and the kids?
Congrats on your passage.
What a good looking hull shape! A beauty!❤
Thanks, yes I'm delighted with her, can't wait to get sailing 😁
Nice to see that no matter where you go. St. Patrick's Day always ends the same way. 😂
Yup, dancing and drinking in the street 😁
Good to see you back 👍
Thanks Steve
nice trip, nice marina and ⦿ to TH-cam algorithm 😉
Hehe thanks for that, always appreciated 😁
