John 8:39-44
John 8:39-44
They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Saint John Chrysostom, Against the Jews. Homily 1, 6:7 Do you see that demons dwell in their souls and that these demons are more dangerous than the ones of old? And this is very reasonable. In the old days the Jews acted impiously toward the prophets; now they outrage the Master of the prophets. Tell me this. Do you not shudder to come into the same place with men possessed, who have so many u...

Saint John Chrysostom, Against the Jews. Homily 1, Section 6:6. Certainly it is the time for me to show that demons dwell in the synagogue, not only in the place itself but also in the souls of the Jews. As Christ said: "When an unclean spirit is gone out, he walks through dry places seeking rest. If he does not find it he says: I shall return to my house. And coming he finds it empty, swept, a...

Saint John Chrysostom, Against the Jews. Homily 1 Section 3 (1) Many, I know, respect the Jews and think that their present way of life is a venerable one. This is why I hasten to uproot and tear out this deadly opinion. I said that the synagogue is no better than a theater and I bring forward a prophet as my witness. Surely the Jews are not more deserving of belief than their prophets. "You ha...

You know there’s Christian Jews, right?
...
There are certain strains of thought from the early church that are best left in the past. This is one.
No it’s not. Nothing he said has changed. Did he say murder the Jews? I’m actually confused about what you think he said here is wrong? If they murdered Jesus and continue to deny his divinity that makes them enemies of God. No matter how much they pretend to now be our friends because our homelands are powerful and useful for their endeavors. Don’t be so short-sighted my friend.
@@moisesjimenez4391 Ok, but we shouldn't trust fallible humans as well. I agree with what you're saying about the Jews making themselves enemies of God for killing his son (though I"m pretty sure he forgave them), but still
You have adopted a Hebrew god and prophets and a few traditions as well; how ironic it is your hatred towards the mother religion.
God doesn't have an ethnicity. He is Universal. He, in the beginning, preffered the descedants of Abraham, but time and time again, they chose idols instead of God and went against His commands. And then they murdered The Messiah, the One sent from the Father, his own Son. Thus the covenant of Old has been replaced with the New.
Everything he said was lost on you right? Mother religion? We don’t owe you guys anything. Everything that was given to you was given to you by God and the new covenant amends the old mosaic law to a far more righteous form that transcends human conception. We use your guys’ history as a basis of understanding for the human condition and how God enacts his grace upon us. However he himself has changed the covenant and you guys are still hung up on the old one. In no longer conforming to the new covenant you no longer worship God, but rather an idea of him that was more comfortable with your old ways.
@ you forget that the Hebrew god actually has a Hebrew name, Yahweh.
Saint John Chrysostom ! GOD BLESS YOU !
Bet
This doesn't make sense. Why would the venerable saint berate the people whose belief Jesus fulfilled through His resurrection? The God of Israel and Christ are one, so why call the jews worshipping YHWH in their synagogue idolators? Has he not learned how to forgive as Our Lord has done on the cross? This needs more context. Where's the rest of his homily?
Actually this sermon is not strange at all, its goal is to defend the true faith against a false one through the invalidation of the latter. At the time of St. John (after the destruction of the 2nd Temple, the compilation of the Talmud, the Edict of Milan and the Council of Nicea) Christianity and Hebraism were two different religions each one had already denounced the other as false. Jews for Christians were superstitious people to convert; on the other hand Christians for Jews were dangerous heretics to be destroyed. At the end, interreligious dialogue and the rediscovery of the Jewish roots, are very modern ideas, we can't expect from a V Century preacher some kind of respect for a different religion that is, in his mind, intrinsically evil because subtracts souls from the guardianship of the Church that Jesus established.
