Hey everyone! In this episode of the Ex-Homeschoolers Club, I sit down with Whitney Brim-DeForest, a former homeschooler with an incredible journey. Whitney’s story is a mix of unique experiences, from an unconventional homeschool structure to finding her calling as a plant scientist. We discuss the ups and downs of her homeschooling years, the challenges of reintegrating into public school, and how a passion for science blossomed from her eclectic upbringing. Along the way, we dive into the cultural gaps she experienced, the mentors who shaped her, and how her homeschooling days influenced her parenting philosophy today. If you’ve ever wondered how homeschooling shapes independence and self-direction, you’ll love this episode!
Key Takeaways:
• Whitney’s homeschooling journey featured Saxon Math alongside experiential learning in arts, history, and hands-on activities.
• How periodic public school stints and a lack of peer consistency impacted her social development.
• The discovery of pop culture, music, and friendships after homeschooling.
• A transformative high school physics teacher and how mentors can inspire career paths.
• Whitney’s choice not to homeschool her kids and the value of diverse opportunities for children.

Oh Saxon Math lol memories
I really enjoyed listening to this interview!
Thanks Dana!
So relatable 😅
Some of us don't need a whole class in order to follow a list of simple instructions 😅 which is a filing taxes and filling out cheques is
If they taught that in high school no one would be able to make the high cost of tuition and student loan interest a good idea.
Especially being able to rapidly calculate price by unit.
Thank you for sharing, Alouette! What a great conversation!
Ex-homeschooler mom of 3. I would not homeschool. Had to briefly during a Covid lockdown and hated it. HAVING SAID THAT (lol), homeschooling has 100% influenced my parenting style, how I interact with them, and how I approach their overall education. In a very positive way.
first!!!!
Good advice. Too many people home schooling kid who are dumb as rocks.
I just came across your channel and I just started the video but you seem like a good person. The world is a better place cuz you are here in it. I forgot about Salty! Christians are the salt of the Earth if anyone is wondering about Salty's name.
“Why I am deconstructing my faith”
Psalty... Wow, it has been a minute.
The process of deconstructing faith begins with doubt which leads to the simple question, "Does this Bible story align with the reality that I live in?" If not then maybe it deserves closer examination for contradictions and inconsistencies.
Well said!
Welcome to reality, it's pretty good. Ignoring the Reality Church irony.
What an awesome name for a channel. That is not an easy escape, grats man!
Glad you think so! And no it is not! Feels like I'm still escaping sometimes.
I wonder if what you and I went through, and many others, is unique to Southern California churches, or the modern Christian church in America, or beyond, in general? I ask because I went through something very similar to you (thank you for having the guts to share, by the way.) But I returned to Faith in Jesus Christ after meeting my wife and her community of Christians, over in a completely different part of the USA. The Christianity I, maybe we, grew up absolutely seemed like a performative, "do this, don't do that" facade. Not saying there weren't/aren't/isn't real Christians in those communities, but, now that I've gotten some distance from it, the difference is wild.
This is coming super late, sorry! But yes! Looking back, I feel like many of the religious environments I grew up in were performative. Now that I'm out, I don't feel a need to perform being a good person, I can actually just be a good person with zero expectation from a congregation staring over my shoulder.
I have this on my list to watch over Xmas when I have some more time to sit and really listen.
As someone who has shared a very similar path but came out of it christian I can definitely appreciate the courage it takes to talk about this stuff. The process of doubting and losing faith is one of the most scary experiences a person can have, from loss of community to fear of the afterlife. Thanks for sharing bro.
I loved this video. I like your longer videos because it feels like a genuine conversation. I also went on a faith journey and ended up in a very similar place as you. I think that being comfortable in not having definite answers to all of lifes' questions has been the biggest learning curve for me. I appreciate your perspective on homeschooling and Christianity. It's very nice to know that I am not the only person who has gone through this and that I won't be the last. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for sharing Julia! It's crazy how alone we feel sometimes in our experiences! That's why I've wanted to share more, in hopes of connecting with people who maybe have gone through something similar.
Very true about no one school type being a definitive solution. I believe there are even studies that prove that it's parental involvement (i.e. time and relationship investment) that defines how well the child will do academically, regardless of homeschooled, public, or private. And we're not even talking about mental, emotional health and happiness!
She seems like a great mom. She seems to really care. The biggest thing a parent can give a child is not material things, but their love and their time.
Homeschooling leads to stupid kids with no social skills i knew of a kid in college who was homeschooled fresham year he had no friends and he was failing all his classes he hung himself inside his dorm room
Homeschooling your children is the best way to go, in my opinion. No one cares more for your own kids than you do. Howwver , many parents are not in a position to do Homeschooling, so each parent must make the best choice they can for their children. ❤lots of love to everyone from OK!
My body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.
This is how I was trained, to the point I did not know what a virgin girl is. I realized that my ex was not vergin on the wedding night, 7 years into marriage. Now I live on ny own, and realized that there is no such a thing as pure woman anymore, even in church
Because not one person on the planet has ever made a good decision about sex when going through puberty and when you give in to urges it gets worse.
Such a good episode! I so relate to your mom in loving the time spent with my kids and regretting not having been a healthier version of myself while raising them! Thanks for highlighting parent stories! You do a great job of bringing out the best parts while not ignoring the hard and messy parts!
Thank you! I'm so excited for our conversation
I want a part 2!!!!! Love you Jacob, and Mom.......I am enjoying your podcast so much. Cant wait til you bring on you dad. Love you all1
I'm glad you liked it! There will be a part 2 for sure!
Thank you for sharing, Ms. Gooden!!
Yikes, these comments are super unfortunate. 😢 Your message is right on! Keep it up.
Yes, do owe you, just asyou owe them.
Then why marry at all? When you marry it is implied that you will engage in sexual activity, if you're a Christian it is to procreate, but that's why you marry, to make it exclusive between you two. If you're going to procrastinate and not engage, why marry? That's why many men ultimately divorce and move on. Sex isn't everything but is a part of marriage.
Guess you learned this rule the hard way. Who told you no and you didn’t want to listen?
Homeschooling done wrong
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your precious family. Great job!!!
Happy Thanksgiving
Did you say “Ojai Valley”?
Ya, a bunch of us ex-homies grew up in the Ojai Valley and Greater Ventura County area
Thanks for sharing! I'm an ex-religious, ex-homeschooler also. There is a sense of relief in seeing other people like me doing more than just surviving in this world. 🫶🏻
Yes! We are out here. You are seen. And you are heard. We welcome you to the club!
i am here with you as well! you are not alone!
Great stuff!!!
If you were to improve by 1% for every video, then you would actually be about 270% better by the hundredth video.
I don’t think the 10k hour rule is limited to music. It applies to almost anything. Work, skills, hobbies ect.
I completely disagree with both of these people. Boys are taught from the beginning that they must be in control, and everything they do is their responsibility. The reason for this is both simple and obvious: as a boy you are energetic and strong enough to hurt someone or break / damage something. Every boy does it, so you get taught from the beginning to control yourself and to understand the impact of your actions.
I think you might have misunderstood the context of this clip. We grew up in a very religious bubble and inside that bubble, young men were NOT taught how to control their sexual urges. Only that it was wrong and sinfully to have sexual urges. Young ladies were taught that they were responsible for men’s purity and were required to dress a certain way and act a certain way to not allow the boys to fall into sexual sin. So what my friend is saying is that it was hard for young women to come forward when sexual misconduct happened to them because they were constantly being told it was their fault that it happened to them.
Holy shit this is so weird, I had this happen a couple times with my online friends and while it wasn't horrible it was still the same feeling of "fuck I knew it"
It’s the worst feeling!
i’ve heard this about my autism..
I mostly associate homeschooled kids as super religious, so my primary reaction is fear and hoping I'm totally wrong
I don’t blame you! It feels like 99.99% (I’m exaggerating) of homeschool kids were from religious households.
Had a blast recording this with you, Jacob.
Dude! So much fun!
Ah yes, I got all the dirt on John haha. Great episode Jake!
Dude YES!!! Gotta get you on to spill the tea
I also used abeka all throughout my homeschool experience. The way he described looking at the kids in the class and wanting to be there was exactly how I felt as a kid. I like your videos, I can relate to a lot of your stories and takeaways from homeschooling.
Thanks for the kind words Julia! Glad to have you in the club!
This was both informative, hopeful and heart warming! Home educator from the UK 🇬🇧 here!
So glad you enjoyed the episode!
