A brief history of preprints in the life sciences
When you think about the start of preprinting, your first thought is likely to be arXiv and the 1990’s. However, the history of preprinting goes back much further. Join us for the next 30 minutes as we travel back to discover the history of preprints - with a focus on the life sciences.

Research Integrity, trust Markers and Forensic Scientometrics
At our July Community call, we discussed the importance of trust markers and research integrity in addition to the newly proposed field of forensic scientometrics. In recent years, science has been experiencing a crisis in trust, with record numbers of retractions, news reports of fraudulent studies, lawsuits against scientists correcting the literature and a deep politicalization of research. ...
How to write a pitch for an op-ed about preprints
Have you ever wanted to write an op-ed but didn’t know where to start? In our latest Lunch & Learn session we cover the basics on how to write a pitch for an opinion piece. We will look at a potential framework to use for crafting a pitch and some advice for writing the pitches and full op-eds. Get out there and pitch your op-eds! The slides are available with a CC-BY licence: bit.ly/op-ed_slid...
ASAPbio × Arcadia: A discussion on gauging the impact of science
Traditional signals of scientific quality - journal titles, closed peer review, and impact factors - fail to reflect the utility and rigor of scientific work. There are additional challenges faced by scientists publishing outside of traditional systems, including discoverability, tracking reuse, determining ways to re-evaluate quality over time when sharing living documents, and more. We need n...
Ai in preprints and publishing with Josh Nicholson
At our May Community call, we discussed the use of Ai in publishing and preprints. The rise of Ai represents a global challenge for all aspects of life. In academia, Ai promises to revolutionize scientific publishing and yet presents major problems for publishers and researchers. On the one hand, preprint servers, such as bioRxiv, have recently begun trialing the use of Ai generated preprint su...
The impact of Robert Maxwell on scientific publishing
Robert Maxwell was many things from an MP to a fraudster. He also had an outsized impact on academic publishing, effectively creating the system that we have today. In this Lunch & Learn we spend 30 mins discussing his impact and the lasting effects that we still feel today within academic publishing and research culture more broadly. The slides are available with a CC-BY licence: bit.ly/Maxwel...
Preprints across the globe; landscapes, perceptions and challenges with Ludo Waltman
At our March Community call, we discussed the globalization of preprints. The adoption of preprints varies greatly across geographical regions, with many of the efforts to drive adoption originating from the US and Western EU. However, this approach often neglects the opinions and needs of others. In this community call we hear from Ludo Waltman about the perceptions of preprints across differe...
A brief history of peer review; ASAPbio lunch & learn
Peer review is often taken as the gold-standard in academia and used as a seal of approval for a scientific study. Additionally, many academics mistakenly believe modern peer review to be over 350 years old. Surprisingly, academics are not taught the history of peer review with many not understanding where this process originated or how it has continually evolved over time. Slides are available...
ASAPbio Community Call. Connecting the dots; linking preprints to other outputs
At our first Community call of 2024, we discussed the linking of preprints to other outputs. The research community produces multiple outputs relating to any individual research project including data sets, methodologies and protocols, peer reviews, outreach or media and more. Linking these many outputs to the preprint is very important for reproducibility and for readers. One of the companies ...
ASAPbio Community Call: The trials and tribulations of post publication peer review
In our November 2023 community call we heard from Lonni Besancon, Assistant Professor at Linkoping University, about his work investigating unreliable science and post-publication peer review. As preprint reviewing and commenting increasingly drives the push towards transparency, these topics become ever more important. Lonni has conducted multiple meta-research projects and written opinion pie...
Community & Commercialisation in biomedical preprint servers
This year’s open access week theme, “Community over Commercialization,” is relevant to not only journals but also other parts of the scholarly communication infrastructure. There are now over 50 preprint servers for the biomedical community, many of which-including the largest by monthly volume, Research Square-are owned or closely affiliated with for-profit publishers. By owning servers, publi...
ASAPbio September 2023 Community Call: Perspectives on preprint peer review models
At our September Community call, we discussed perspectives on preprint peer review models. Preprint peer review services have substantially increased in recent years. Each service operates in a different way, with some partnering with journals, some focussed on providing authors with reviews and some like a traditional journal. In January 2023, eLife became the first journal to shift it’s model...
Driving recognition of preprints in research assessment
The recognition of preprints by publishers has been a significant step in preprints becoming common usage in the life sciences. In more recent years, funding bodies and hiring committees have implemented policies recognising preprints as valid research outputs and as evidence in grant or job applications. We will hear from Hannah Hope (Open research lead, Wellcome Trust) and Needhi Bhalla (Prof...

Community preprint adoption in the social sciences: perspectives from PsyArXiv & SocArXiv
Compared to other disciplines, biologists are preprint novices. For example, social scientists have been posting working papers to SSRN since 1994. But much has changed in the social sciences publishing landscape since that time, and a new wave of community preprint servers have launched over the last decade. In the May 2023 ASAPbio community call, we heard from preprint advocates in the social...

I think that while everyone could write everything about any topic, a brazen person could just as easily claim expertise on a subject and sprout nonsense. Now, other persons who are not experts on a topic would not know how well (if at all) the brazen person's claims should be taken. Assessment can be made easier by asking the question: what do other experts - your peers - think of your findings? I think that is the most important and underappreciated thing scientists can do. Vet each other for the general public. Self correction. On the other hand, when suddenly grand money appears and one has to explain to the tax payer or sponsors which persons got which grands that things really go downhill. That takes peer review to bureaucracy.

We don't need journals anymore. A peer-reviewed pre-print is all we need.
