ASAPbio is a researcher-driven non-profit that promotes transparency and innovation in life sciences communication. We'll feature informative videos, recordings of relevant meetings, and interviews with biologists who are using preprints and open peer review in their work.
Preprint myth busting: If I post a preprint I might get scooped
In this ASAPbio Myth-Busting video, we address a common fear in research publishing: “Will posting a preprint lead to my work being scooped?” The reality may surprise you! Preprints establish your priority with a timestamped, citable record, reducing the risk of scooping by proving you were first to share your findings. They’re also easily discoverable on platforms like Google Scholar, offering more visibility than conference presentations alone. Many journals even recognize preprint priority, with some, like eLife, now requiring preprinting to support open and transparent research.

Preprint Myth Busting: Are preprints merely preliminary research and not reliable?
มุมมอง 102หลายเดือนก่อน
In this ASAPbio myth-busting video, we address a common question: Are preprints merely preliminary research and, therefore, not reliable? The truth of the matter is that preprints often contain detailed methods and data; they have passed the screening or moderation process of preprint servers. Most authors shared preprints right before submission to journals for formal peer review. However, for...

Open Research Practices for Researchers, Preprint Services, and Journals: The Revised TOP Guidelines
มุมมอง 902 หลายเดือนก่อน
First introduced in 2015, the Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) Guidelines have been influential in shaping publishing norms for open research practices. A new preprint proposes a major update to TOP. In this session, we give an overview of the proposed revisions to the TOP Framework and consider how researchers, preprint services, and journals can use TOP to enhance research transparen...
Preprints and the Global South
มุมมอง 883 หลายเดือนก่อน
Preprints and the wider open science landscape has made great strides over the past decade. Preprint adoption has grown to 12% of the biomedical literature and preprint peer review is on the rise. Institutions and funders are increasingly recognising and supporting preprints. However, this is only the situation in the Global North. In the Global South, preprints are still heavily underutilised ...

Research Integrity, trust Markers and Forensic Scientometrics
มุมมอง 815 หลายเดือนก่อน
At our July Community call, we discussed the importance of trust markers and research integrity in addition to the newly proposed field of forensic scientometrics. In recent years, science has been experiencing a crisis in trust, with record numbers of retractions, news reports of fraudulent studies, lawsuits against scientists correcting the literature and a deep politicalization of research. ...

ASAPbio × Arcadia: A discussion on gauging the impact of science
มุมมอง 1487 หลายเดือนก่อน
Traditional signals of scientific quality - journal titles, closed peer review, and impact factors - fail to reflect the utility and rigor of scientific work. There are additional challenges faced by scientists publishing outside of traditional systems, including discoverability, tracking reuse, determining ways to re-evaluate quality over time when sharing living documents, and more. We need n...
Ai in preprints and publishing with Josh Nicholson

Preprints are not reviewed - can we trust them?
Thank you for the amazing presentation. We are building an alternative open-access publishing system on top of Rxiv's. Eventually, science has to migrate from for-profit journals to Rxiv-based open-access publishing and peer review, which is the only value proposition of publishers.
Thank you so much for insightfully produced content🙌🏻
You're very welcome,! Jonny
"Newspapers 📰 don't create content"... 😂
This is GREAT
You gotta really work hard to avoid conspiracy theories when talking about this situation, makes me think maybe theres a conspiracy here...
Highly Insightful.
I think that while everyone could write everything about any topic, a brazen person could just as easily claim expertise on a subject and sprout nonsense. Now, other persons who are not experts on a topic would not know how well (if at all) the brazen person's claims should be taken. Assessment can be made easier by asking the question: what do other experts - your peers - think of your findings? I think that is the most important and underappreciated thing scientists can do. Vet each other for the general public. Self correction. On the other hand, when suddenly grand money appears and one has to explain to the tax payer or sponsors which persons got which grands that things really go downhill. That takes peer review to bureaucracy.
@ASAPbio: thank you for sharing this recording.
Thanks to Prof. Besancon for this work and for posting this!
We don't need journals anymore. A peer-reviewed pre-print is all we need.
