Advanced Driving Techniques
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 22 ต.ค. 2023
Advanced Driving techniques is aimed at drivers who want to be progressive, drive as fast as possible within the legal limits and above all be safe. I will explain and demonstrate techniques that align with the course provided to emergency vehicle drivers excluding any blue light or pursuit driving.
Using the techniques shown in this channel should make your driving more fun, will allow you to complete your journeys quickly and safely and even possibly reduce you fuel consumption and vehicle maintence costs.
The techniques explained will also be a good resource for those undertaking, or considering, an Advanced Driving course.
I am a Masters Mentor, National Observer assessor and National Observer with the Institue of Advanced Motorists with over 20 years experience of advanced driving.

Acceleration sense - A technique that allow you to safely use your brakes less.
Acceleration sense is the ability to vary the speed of your vehicle in response to changing road or traffic conditions by using the accelerator. If you can master this technique then you will reduce the use of your brakes, cause less wear on your tyres, use less fuel and reduce emissions.

In this first part of a two part video I talk about the use of the Accelerator in terms of its affect on the balace and weight distribution of the car and how correct use of the Accelerator can improve safety, make your driving more dynamic and reduce you usage of brakes, where safe to do so, to conserve your brake pads and reduce the cost of replacing them. In the next video I will give a demo...
How do you use Sports mode in your vehicle?
มุมมอง 1669 หลายเดือนก่อน
A lot of modern vehicel now have a multi mode switch which give you the option between comfort mode, normally the default mode when you start the car, Eco or Green mode and sports mode 🏎️. In Eco or Green mode the cars systems are set to reduce fuel usage so the gears are held for longer the response on the accelerator is much slower and all of this can have a quite a significant effect on the ...
What can we do to protect our vehicles from the damage caused by hitting potholes in the road?
มุมมอง 1669 หลายเดือนก่อน
It seems to me that since the pandemic the state of our roads in the UK have taken a severe turn for the worse with potholes and scaring of the road surfaces being a common condition across the whole of the UK. In this video I talk about how you might avoid some of the damage to your vehicle and also make the ride a lot more comfortable for you and your passengers
What is the most misused safety feature on any vehicle?
มุมมอง 7879 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video I talk about the simple car horn. When you are allowed to use it, when you are not allowed to use it and an alternative to use when the use of the horn is not allowed. You also need to be aware of the consequences of not having a fully working horn and the issues that you can have if you use it incorrectly
Separating braking and changing gear - why and how

The advanced driving system used by all emeregency vehicle drivers and, as explained in the book Roadcraft, is designed to promote safety, smoothness and progress through maintenance of maximum vehicle stability. Overlapping of braking and gear changing compromises safety in two ways one being the application of braking exerts a force on the wheels that they need to cope with and changing gear ...

Your journey, your weather and events - Set the scene for a drive
If my vehicle is in cruise control, I just flick the switch an slow down.
Yes I’m a good driver but I’m only human so I’m not perfect and sometimes I make mistakes.
@@WayneTulip-zm9gw there is no such thing as a perfect driver or a perfect drive. All we can do is be aware, be observant and practical the skills we have acquired.
It’s not only on dual carriageways and motorways where you can undertake, you can also undertake on a single carriageway if it has 2 or more lanes going in the same direction, rule 163 refers to overtaking on non-motorways and it states “only overtake on the left if the vehicle in front is signalling to turn right, and there is room to do so, stay in your lane if traffic is moving slowly in queues, if the queue on your right is moving more slowly than you are, you may pass on the left.”, rule 268 refers to overtaking on motorways which states “Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake, in congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right, in these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane, even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right, do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.” Both rules 163 and 268 are not “must not” rules so it’s not illegal to undertake but you should still follow the Highway Code, it quite clearly states that you can only undertake if the vehicle in front is signalling to turn right or you’re in congested conditions.
It’s not only undertaking on a dual carriageway and on a motorway, you can also undertake on a single carriageway where 2 lanes are going in the same direction, I understand what you’re saying but rule 163 of the Highway Code, which refers to undertaking on single and dual carriageways, and rule 268 of the Highway Code, which refers to undertaking on motorways, make it very clear when we can and can’t overtake, you can only undertake if the vehicle in front is turning right and there’s room to pass on the left and in congested conditions, you can also undertake on a one-way street, if you’re on a 2 lane road and lane 2 is stationary and therefore a queue, and also if you have an overhead sign saying “stay in lane”, apart from that you shouldn’t do it, I know it’s annoying if for example you’re on a 2 lane dual carriageway and you’re in lane 1 doing 70mph and there is a car in lane 2 doing 50mph for no reason, they’re not overtaking or not turning right so they should be in lane 1 which is the normal driving lane if you’re not overtaking anybody or you’re not turning right but if the traffic is free flowing unfortunately you can’t undertake them, no matter how annoying it is.
It’s not only considered undertaking on a dual carriageway and on a motorway, it’s also considered undertaking on a single carriageway when there are 2 lanes going in the same direction, you should only undertake in 5 situations, and they are, on a one-way street, if the vehicle in front is signalling to turn right and there is room to pass them on the left, if you get overhead signs which say “stay in lane”, in congested conditions and if lane 2 is stationary on a road with 2 lanes going in the same direction, while undertaking isn’t illegal, it’s still a “do not” rule in the Highway Code and by doing it, if you were to cause an accident, the court will blame you as it’s not a common practice to overtake on the left, it’s only common practice to overtake on the right, if you think about it, overtaking on the left is extremely dangerous, mainly for 2 reasons, and they are, say for example you’re driving on a motorway with 3 lanes, you’re in lane 1 which is the normal driving lane if you’re not overtaking or turning right, a car is in lane 2 overtaking you, they suddenly have a medical emergency and need to move left to stop but they can’t because lane 1 is congested, that would obviously be a very dangerous situation, also, if a driver isn’t really paying attention to the road signs and the road markings properly and they’re in lane 3 for example but they realise at the last moment that they need to be in lane 1, they might dangerous shoot across 2 lanes of traffic just because they don’t want to miss their exit.
@@WayneTulip-zm9gw could be the subject of another video! It’s always difficult to judge the level of content vs length of video. Very rarely are things definitive in driving as it’s a human activity with many variables. Safety of course is always the first and last concern
Indefinitely agree with you there, safety is my number 1 priority when driving as of course I don’t want to hurt anyone, I’ll check out your video on undertaking.
Brakes can become rusty, when not used. From time to time it's good to brake stronger, in order to keep rotors in good condition.
If speeding is so dangerous, why is the German Autobahn statistically safer than USA Interstates? Speed in connection with other factors may kill (wrong time or place, the vehicle, weaving). However the Autobahn proves that speed alone does not kill. It is amazing how much easier it is to drive in Germany with strict enforcement of Slow Traffic Keep Right without all the weaving you see on American Interstates.
Agreed. I think you answered your own question. Inappropriate speed combined with other factors is the real danger
Interesting. Thank you.
I find watching dash cam channels helps me to be safer, simply because I am now FAR more aware of what other drivers (especially the bad ones) may do, and I can anticipate and avoid issues much more effectively.
make the video again this time using a manual not a namby pamby automatic.
I’ll keep it in mind for future videos
Most UK public has no motorway driver training as we have on Europe. Normal. Not advanced .😅 They need more sport here to get brain going.
I think engine braking works in petrol cars by restricting the air to the engine (the throttle body closes the flap), and the pistons, on the intake stroke, create a vacuum that uses energy from the kinetic energy of the car. In diesel engines it's a bit different and there are several methods. I think one of them is using the anti-shudder valve, that basically it has the same effect than the throttle body in petrol engines (although I'm not sure if some of them have them in the exhaust instead of the intake), and other systems work by opening the exhaust valve in the combustion stroke and wasting the energy of the compression, so yes, in this case it's like that, but I think it's only used in big engines, for lorries and similar machinery. In any case I might be wrong, but that's how I understand it according the sources I've checked.
Wow thanks for the details. I’m no mechanic but interesting comment. You learn something every day 👍
I replaced the original brake pads of my car (1460 kg) with 75k miles and they still had around 30% left 😅. And I do quite a bit of city driving as well, but I try to anticipate the driving conditions by lifting the accelerator quite in advance, making sure I'm not bothering anyone. It's common sense, the more you use the brakes, the more energy you're wasting and the only way of safely using the brakes less is to anticipate to what's coming. Also, it's safer since you need to pay more attention to your surroundings, but once you get used to it, it comes naturally.
Agreed but you must see people using their brakes when you are not. I think it is common sense as well but unfortunately I don’t see this in practice. Thanks for the comment 👍
I very rarely use my brakes at all, I drive an EV and I use regenerative braking, thats the future
Great. That’s why I talk about understanding the vehicle you drive 👍
Nice video. 03:35 - re using the brake to slow down if vehicles are following. Presumably this is only if the vehicles are following closely, or catching up fast, or you need to slow down quite abruptly, as you do not follow your own advice at 05:25?
Yes correct. If a brake light would benefit the vehicle behind then you should use it but if vehicles are at a distance then you need to make a judgement about whether the brake light is necessary
I've always naturally done this, but one thing to consider it that even through you aren't braking with brake pedal you should still be slightly depressing it (not engaging the brakes) such that the vehicle behind sees your brake lights and knows that you are slowing down. I know most people don't bother.
Yes. I think I said that in the video. If I didn’t in this one I have in the next which is release on Wednesday.
Situational awareness... Look ahead past the immediate car ahead and anticipate whats coming... Adjust accordingly for smoother ride. Dont get tunnel vision of just only the car ahead.
Yes, I tend to be looking down the road and doing this. Benefit is that your driving is more economical without superfluous braking then accelerating then braking, and so on. And it's not just other vehicles, but observing the terrain. A lot of people (including my wife) basically use the pedals as "go" and "stop", not carrying speed when appropriate - not smooth at all.
Accelerator "sense" is a no-brainer for me. Watch the traffic in front of you, see what's developing, use throttle or do not to modulate speed so you do not need to use your brakes. Driving in central Florida, drivers are from everywhere. Seems by my observations, most are just throttle-to brake. This dreadful.
Well here you have problem with if you are not using your breaks they will rust and you have to replace them which is for ne did cost 800$ for rear breaks, new brake pads cost 20$... So I instead have now a habit of breaking hard at least once every drive I do because it is MUCH more expensive to fix breaks that is rusted from not being uses enough.
If you manage to avoid using your brakes that much you are doing something very wrong. When slowing down with vehicles behind you should use your brakes to inform them that you are slowing down. 😀
I will return to this video when you has fixed the audio.
Audio is only on the left side. You need to record in mono so it will come out of both sides equally.
New version. Released with good audio. Thanks for pointing out as I had completely missed it 👍
This video is breaking my brain. He is driving on the right side of the car, but the audio is coming from the left. ;)
Thanks for the comment. I’ll see if I can make the audio better in future video releases.
New version released with audio corrected. Thanks for pointing it out. 👍
Yes this is very true! My breaks last forever because of this lol
Well here you have problem with if you are not using your breaks they will rust and you have to replace them which is for ne did cost 800$ for rear breaks, new brake pads cost 20$...
@a64738 lol, you think I can never use my breaks? Lol.You'rer taking it a bittooo far. I just do not use my break unnecessary or to hard...I drive 150 miles a day. You think my break will rust on a car that active lol. I know you don knowo the whole story, but that comment makes no sense.... I also have a hybrid with regenerative brakings, which saves the regular breaks even more. Again? You speak as if you know everything that's going on when you clearly don't. I'm glad you know the cost of things, but that doesn't help you understand things. Let me just dissect your comment a little more. Please try to explain the discrepancy. Between $820, brake pads is one installed by you and 1 installed by the shop. Is that why one's twenty one is eight hundred cause that don't make no sense, either...
Why do certain people, often driving certain makes of car, go charging up to traffic lights full pelt that have just turned red? Is it so they have more time to check their social media while stationary at the lights?
Agreed. It’s crazy
Yes, it's one of my biggest pet peeves while driving, especially people that pass you to speed to a red light and they don't even know where they are half the time going in the wrong lane, then they gotta switch over once you pass them cause they're in the left only lane dummies. I wish the social media thing was. I've realized excuse unfortunate people have been doing this before social media.
Just add the necessary distance that's missing behind you, to the distance in front of you.
I can't see in the dark any more because of the new cars with x-ray headlights.
I haven't watched the video, but let me have a stab at answering the question: 1 Drivers 2 Drivers 3 Drivers 4 Drivers Do I win a prize?
Interesting that you didnt mention following position. I was out with an associate the other day - we were in a long stream of traffic doing 45-50 in an NSL, so no real possiblity of an overtake that would actually acheive anything. I was working with the lad that by watching the stream on vehicles in front you can see where the holes are by their movement (either swerving at last second to avoid, or the lurch as they go down it) Also, I was getting him to extend his following position (approx 3-4 secs) so that he has time to see the holes and make sensible plans to react to them.
Good point. It’s always a balance between keeping the video not too long and getting in all the different aspects into the video.
You beat me to it re letting other vehicles ahead of you "discover" hazards for you. Either by their movement or braking. I use the same technique for letting vehicles ahead discover puddles when it's been raining as well as various hazards at night.
I am originally from Glasgow and the last time I was there (just a few weeks ago) can confirm that a lot of the roads there are shocking with the amount (and depth!!) of potholes!! Think I'll take the train the next time I go to visit the family (will certainly be more comfortable and lessen any damage to my car!!) Great informative video btw 😊👍
It was interesting to hear about the origin of the word 'pothole' - although when you spoke of people who make pots, I automatically thought of metal pots. It took me a little while to cotton on. (I got there in the end, though!)
AppreciateD FroM ScotlanD...
When muppets tail gate me I don't brake I just lift my right foot and let car slow down until they get the massage to back off, works 99% of the time, closer they get slower I drive, as sticker on back of my car says, if they don't like it they can overtake
I do a single blink of the hazard lights. Some drivers will think "Oh yes, oops!". Some won't in which I'll slow down a bit gently and sometimes even pull into a layby to let them past.
I find putting on my rear fog light works! Saves touching the brakes
It’s illegal to use your horn when your vehicle is stationary? So if someone is about to reverse into your vehicle when you are parked and you can’t get out of their way, you can do nothing about it?
Not that would qualify as exceptional circumstance. Definitely you would use the horn in those circumstances. 👍
@@AdvancedDrivingTechniques the rules seem a bit convoluted - you can’t use the horn if stationary or between the hours of 11 pm & 7 am - except under exceptional circumstances. Here in Australia you can’t use your horn at all unless it’s necessary to warn other road users or animals of the approach or position of your vehicle. Time of day or stationary doesn’t matter.
I'm sure others have mentioned, try using your hazard warning lights momentarily and slowly slow down; this may give the appearance of a breakdown situation to the tailgater. Unfortunately, this can irritate the tailgater and they can get mad !!
Lane hogging. It can also be the situation where you yourself is the problem; like travelling at 20mph, or less, in a 30-40mph limit !! You may be the hazard yourself. Not moving over from a central lane to a slower lane. In the UK it is illegal to undertake.
@ScarboroughTourist no it’s not illegal to undertake unless it is done in a reckless way
@@AdvancedDrivingTechniques Interesting: I have been told by a police officer it is illegal. I can understand queued traffic being legal, but, for my edification where in the highway code does it state this is possible? Are you saying I can undertake a middle lane hugger on a motorway legally ?
@@ScarboroughTourist yes. There is no law that says you cannot pass on the left on a multi lane carriageway. Imagine on a dual carriageway that a car remains in lane two travelling at 40 mph. If you don’t pass on the left then you will be holding up traffic.
@@AdvancedDrivingTechniques Again, interesting, but I shall have to inquire further with the traffic police officers for a definitive answer on this matter. I've seen it several times in the past, cannot remember where, stating a different opinion.
Unfortunately I can not agree with any unnecessary touching of the brake pedal, from seeing this done to varying levels over the years I have to say that with todays drivers you are more likely to be faced with a road rage incident from an already irate driver. From my experience of tailgaters it's best to let them by if possible. If it is not possible then slightly reducing your speed to give them more options to overtake while maintaining and increasing a larger gap than normal to the vehicle in front. I've always got full observation so as soon as the vehicle pulls out from behind I will slow to get them by quickly and more safely, this will also mitigate the chance of inflaming a driver, who by their very nature of driving too close, will already be in an unreasonable state of mind. Of course we know that rarely do they gain anything as they are usually just in front at the next hold up. If you don't mind me saying the audio seems to be suffering from some reverb making it uncomfortable to the ears. All the best.
Good resume.
I agree 100% with this video. Usually, maniacs go in front and you keep your safety bubble front and behind. Allow fake drivers overtake you, it is a lot safer have them in front. Good video 👍
No they don't. Not lately.
Good driving. pure IPSGA . and system control for bends. well done. 👍 I did not find any mistake.
On a single carriageway if a layby is available just pull in and let the tailgater pass
You make a video about narrow country roads, and don't even mention passing places.
No because that wasn’t the subject of this video but could be a topic for another! Thanks
At 5:40, on a quiet stretch of dual carriageway, by driving up the left side of that Mercedes and briefly sitting in his blind spot you created a wholly avoidable hazard. Not, I would have thought, a maneuver one should be displaying in an advanced driving instructional video.
I was fully aware of the Mercedes, as I stated on the video, and the other aspects of the roads through thorough observation so no hazard was constructed in that respect. If you look at the circumstances you will see that progressing any further would have reduced the gap to the car in front which would then have created a hazard. I’m happy with the video and that everything was safe and progressive
@@AdvancedDrivingTechniques I didn't even think I went to the right timestamp at first. You did absolutely nothing wrong or dangerous, think people just want to nitpick
Interesting comment, his car in theory was not in blind spot for the Mercedes, however, yea staggered formation is always better I got you point we try to avoid be in the hands of the other driver "skill level is unknow" However he was paying attention to the Mercedes he was ready for any surprise.
This is good for beginner drivers, but after a few years it's benefitial to learn heel toe shifting.
The system taught to all emergency vehicle drivers maintains this technique in all circumstances. Heal toe is useful to be aware of but is normally used in race driving rather than on the roads. If you learn it and use it proficiently then I agree
@@AdvancedDrivingTechniques 100% that is for racing.
Maybe for fun. I do double clutching downshifting for fun on motorway to overtake due give more torque. my car is only 83 HP. however why I said for fun, nowadays gearboxes have synchromesh. but yea, still fun to avoid use synchromesh. and is good skill when gearbox break down. now about heel toe that is for racing.
Mate you need a better phone or a bloody usb c microphone ffs. Couldn't watch heres what i do, move out of the way, let it go, keep enjoying your day. If you wanna act like a (unt, your gunna probably be treated like a cunt by a (unt. long story short, dont be a (unt.
colin mcrae would fail n "few" of those 7 points😂does that mean he was not good?😛
Looking at the camera is not good. When exiting a roundabout you must use your left door mirror, if a cyclist was passing you on the near-side (legal) you wouldn't see him, generally poor visual scanning especially to the sides. Not enough use of all three mirrors.
I can see how you may have misinterpreted looking at the camera for lateral scanning. I agree that the use of near side mirror is required for cyclists but also use of off side mirror is required as this is where motor cyclists typically pass and I am very particular about both when driving and teaching. I have to disagree with you on your statement as I use mirrors often and as appropriate.
Thanks very much for this vid! Hope you don't mind me sharing this with an associate that rushes hazards (in particular LH turns and has a tendancy to BGOL
Please feel free to share as much as possible 👍
If you’re being tailgated check your own speed first. Nothing more annoying than leaving on time only to get screwed over by some slow jackass who doesn’t pay any attention and thinks the road belongs to them to gawk at the things on the side of the road
Agreed it can be annoying when people are driving slower than the conditions allow but you must always remember safety comes first.
@@AdvancedDrivingTechniques I always if possible drive to the speed limit but unless people are taking the piss, like 40/45 in a 60 its there right the speed limit is a maximum if they want to do 50/55 in a 60 that's there right, if people don't like it over take like i do
Great advice on tyres. Definitely something that should not be a budget purchase or not up to the rating that vehicle needs. Keep the videos coming Alan
