Ep 01 🌱 My First Allotment Garden. You won’t believe what I’m starting with!
I really enjoy your videos, Will. The creative simplicity, (with a touch of humor), is just lovely! I may have another go at growing ginger. Kind regards from -14F snowy Wyoming. ;0)
Thank you for the kind words. -14F is really cold hope it warms up for you soon 🥶🌱
I soaked my ginger from the supermarket overnight to remove any growth retardant they put on supermarket ginger to stop it sprouting in the shop, then planted them. They like warm temps, and not too much water to begin with, so as not to rot them. They take a long time to grow, but I think they might go better inside in the warm over winter. It's summer here and mine have sprouted after about 8 weeks of waiting.
Thank you, that’s a top tip. I think I might need to try again, washing before planting. Good to know it can work 🙂🌱
I think ginger needs warm temperatures to germinate, so keep your pots next to a radiator for the best results. Having said that I haven't managed to grow any successfully yet but I am still trying. Great video I wish you luck with all your growing experiments. 👍
Thank you for that tip. I will add them to a heat mat and near the radiator. I’m not convinced they will grow but you never know 🌱🙂
It has begun 🤭 sitting staring at pots 😂😂. Great update Will and lovely to see seedlings doing well, Ali 🥶🥶🇨🇦
Thank you, hopefully they lead to a successful harvest 🙂🌱
Leeks have flat leaves onions round you'll soon behave to tell when they grow a bit , Melons and aubergine like a lot of heat so glasshouse be best , and yes chillies grown from supermarket chillies grow well and produce fruit Have grow ginger from the supermarket they take ages to start sprouting mine didn't come to much you need to give them a good wash before planting the root as apparently they spray them with something to stop them sprouting best of luck will 😊
I didn’t know that about leeks and onions thank you. Hopefully we get a good summer for the melons and aubergines and chillies I’m excited to see how the supermarket seeds get on. The ginger didn’t look very healthy when I planted it so not holding out much hope. Thank you 🙂🌱
Your editing and videos are great! Look forward to them coming out :) I've managed melons before, i grew 2 in a little glass house in a nice warm spot... you can do it!
Thank you, I’m not sure about the melons, it’s encouraging to know you have had success with them. I will look forward to seeing how they develop and might need a little glass house 🙂🌱
You are a pleasure to watch, Will. I find myself forgetting to label things too 😂 I suppose you'll find out later 😂 good luck with the melons, I have never been able to grow them successfully, perhaps because my plot doesn't quite get enough sun for them. Peppers, abergines, and tomatoes I manage just fine but always struggled with melons. Great update, keep up the good work mate
Thank you, I need a label to remind me to label my seeds 🙂. Glad to hear you have had success with peppers and aubergines, it’s encouraging to know they can be grown in the uk. I’m not holding out much hope for the melons but fun to give them a try 🙂🌱
You have given me thoughts on sowing rhubarb seeds. I wonder how long it takes to get a harvest. I think you are right about covering beds, I know mice/rats dig up and eat field beans and I have heard squirrels or whatever dig up and eat spring bulbs. It is so heart breaking to lose our baby crops by any reason. Good luck with your experiments.
I think it takes a couple of years to get a reasonable harvest from the rhubarb. I will keep you updated on how mine get on. Covering everything seems to be the way forward, anything left in the open just gets eaten 😞. Thanks 🙂🌱
I planted rhubarb seeds - it grew quite quickly - the usual advice is to leave off harvesting until the second year of growth, by then you should have plenty of rhubarb.
@@juliehartley3652 Thanks Julie.
I love the history lessons with each seed your sowing
Thank you 🙂🌱
But aren't you in the Southern Hemisphere...?
Northern hemisphere, I’m based in the UK. On cold days like this I wish I was in the Southern Hemisphere 🙂🌱
Goodness, you sound so Australian!! My bad.@growwithwill7841
Great educational video Will with some humour thrown in too. Keep up the good work 😊
Thank you 🙂🌱
Okay…this will be my 4th try. I have responded 3 times to your response comment asking about the Carolina Reaper. I’m going to try responding with a new comment. Hopefully it will post! The Reaper is 2 million Scoville units. A jalapeño is 2000-5000 Scoville units. Ed Currie developed the Reaper & has a new one, “Pepper X”, that can be even hotter at over 3 million Scoville units. The heat depends on the individual plants and peppers. Check out the TH-cam reactions of Chili Klaus and his friend when they try the Reaper and X. Kind regards. :0)
Thank you, apologies I didn’t get notification of replies. They both sound way too hot for me 🥵 but would love to give growing them a try. I will look out for Chili Klaus’ video 🙂🌱
@ No apologies needed. Stuff happens. Kind regards. :0)
i saw the leek joke on allotment family .
What kind of soil perlite or or veggie soil?
Fantastic video, Will. I like how you added some fun bits of trivia in there. Love the humour you've added as well - made me chuckle! Happy growing to you! 😊
Thank you 🙂🌱
Think it will take me 7 months to get started my new allotment is taking shape slowly .
Congratulations on the new plot. I’m sure you will be successfully growing in no time. Looking forward to watching the progress 🙂🌱
May i ask? What country are you from? I love learning about gardens in different countries/cultures
Thanks so much for watching. The allotment plot is based in the southeast of the UK 🙂🌱
Will, just found your site with the Jan 2025 video, I've returned to the first to make my way slowly through your first year. Note, you have lots of good comment, a sure sign you're off to a good start. Did you get to chat to your gardening neighbours.
Bird nesting boxes. No harm in putting up a bird food tray and bringing your food, bread, old cake etc. You probable do that in your garden at home. You'll get the tamer robins and blackbirds come while or just after digging. There are squirrel proof feeders that you can get, the small birds can reach the food, the squirrels can't, and yes they work, I have two in the garden. Great videos. No music and your editing allows time to think about what your talking about. MJ
Thank you, I will give it a go and hopefully encourage the small birds. 🙂🌱
Strange. We had a leek in our pond a few weeks back… 😉
😂
I good video, Will - I'll be shopping for seeds this week.
Thank you, hope the seed shopping is successful. Looking forward to the growing season 🙂🌱
Just found your channel! Loved this video
Thank you 🙂🌱
Cracking video. Very entertaining and informative. All the best. Mags
Thank you 🙂🌱
That was a fun video to watch Will. 👍
Thank you
This is an absolutely delightful video, with bits of humor and information. Brilliant! (Loved the leek joke.) (I grew Carolina Reaper chiles last year. 🙂👍)
Thank you, are Carolina Reaper chiles as hot as people say? 🙂🌱
Its like watching a Wikipedia video!! Well done!
Thank you 😂🌱
Happy New Year 🥳 Will and family. I’m doing my chili 🌶️ pepper 🫑 and aubergine 🍆 this week too. Great and fun video, Ali 😶🌫️🥶🇨🇦
Thank you, happy new year! I need to sow some peppers. Hopefully the weather warms up 🙂🌱
Never had you down as a comedian 😂😂😂 great video will , Happy new year and hopefully a productive one 👍 happy sowing 😊 ☺️
Thank you, happy new year 😂🌱
Great vlog Will ... very informative and funny. Good luck with your seed growing 👍
Thank you 🙂🌱
loving the humor you have added, and snippets of info about each seed. Great little video…go you! 😂
Thank you 🙂🌱
😂😂😂 great video!!
Thank you 😂🌱
Excellent introduction to seed planting.great start to the growing season season.
Thank you, looking forward to the 2025 growing season 🙂🌱
I plant carrot seed with sand and radishes and chives. The carrots need space and free flow so sand and radishes do that as radishes are in and out in 4 weeks leaving a hole for the carrots to grow in to. The chives discourage the carrot fly as they hate the onion smell. Good luck and you did very well this year.
I love this idea, thank you for sharing I will give it a try this year. Happy new year! 🎉🌱🙂
Hello, Will! Happy New Year! What a brilliant start to your plot! I think the carrots and spring onions planted together turned out pretty good. What an interesting carrot “contraption”. Sometimes taking out a tree is necessary. Good job! Yes, they can be stubborn. Best wishes for your new growing spaces! Kind regards. :0)
Thank you, I was please with the carrots and spring onions. I will try them together on the plot this year. The tree was hard work but gives me more space for growing. Happy new year! 🎉🌱🙂
It's going to get busy soon with Spring sowing and I'm looking forward to seeing even more progress in your videos. I'm always learning and I'm growing onions over winter for the first time this year and they're looking good so far. Happy New Year to you and yours!
Thank you, I can’t wait for the spring and all the sowing. Good luck with the onions I’m hopeful mine will develop. Happy New Year! 🎉🙂🌱
Happy New Year 🥳 Will and family, here’s to a fantastic 2025 season, Ali 🌞🥶🇨🇦
Thank you, wishing you a very happy new year 🎉🌱🙂
Happy new year 🎉
Happy New Year 🎉🌱🙂
its looking great!! i super cant wait for spring !! every year we all have more knowledge and we learn daily from just giving it ago and sharing as we go , look forward to seeing more ventures in the new year
Thank you, certainly looking forward to spring and a lot more to learn. Happy New Year! 🙂🌱
Carrots don't usually like being transplanted they tend to fork better sown straight in the ground same with parsnips Will , Blueberries do good in pots with some ericaceous compost your Rhubarb should be fine they die right back , I would love that bay tree actually found one dumped in our back lane before Christmas lovely Christmas presents 😂 , Lovely little harvest 👍 Happy new year and happy growing for 2025 😊
Thank you, I will try some direct sow carrots next and like the idea of parsnips. Hoping the rhubarb comes back 🤞🏻. Save the bay tree if you can 🙂. Happy New Year! 🌱
Was about to say the same
You have done very well in such a short time. Feeding the birds will be rewarding especially the black birds as they love slugs and snails. Personally I wouldn’t feed the squirrels as they cause a lot of damage to crops. They like to dig up small bulbs. I look forward to seeing your progress in the new years. Cheers 👋 to 2026
Thank you, anything that eats the slugs is worth encouraging 🙂. Happy New Year!
Good to reflect on the past year and plan better for the new one. Happy New Year !🎆🎆
Thank you, Happy New Year 🎇
hey ive never managed to get any rhubarb going from seed but i know many put a pot over the crowns to force grow and removed it in spring for more growth x
Thank you, I might try this see if it improves the yield 🙂🌱
@growwithwill7841 yes apparently it does , you could use an old compost bin if one spare
If you didn't cover your field beans maybe the mice have had them they love them ?🤔
I think it could be mice as they were not buried that deep. Will wait and see if any more sprout 🙂🌱
I use cup hooks face them pointing down into the boards to hook the nexting on , Rhubarb is fine it dies back in winter 👍
Thank you, hooks sound like the way forward I will give them a try. Good to know the rhubarb will spring back I was worried I had lost it all 🙂🌱
We thought we had lost our rhubarb as well, but it came back to life in the spring! Actually we forgot it was even there and almost planted something over the top of it!! Looking good at your plot :)
My rhubarb looked dead to me but will trust the process and hopefully see it spring back. Thank you 🙂🌱
I’ve noticed that many folks have had some difficulty with their field beans, too. I can’t begin to imagine the amount of rain you folks have had over there. We’re dry and cold over here in Wyoming. Your plot is looking good, Will. Good luck with the tulips! Kind regards. :0)
Thank you, I feel like the field beans have been a waste of time. I will try a different cover crop next year. It’s been a mild but wet winter so far. Hope the weather improves for you 🙂🌱
Don't forget Will, when you are putting the hooks on the raised beds, put them on the outside of the boards and turned downwards, but you probably didn't need me to tell you that, it's just that a friend took my advice recently and put them on the inside!! 😁
Thank you, that sounds like something I would do 😂. Hopefully it will keep the nets nice and secure 🙂🌱
@growwithwill7841 I have net+hooks over my onion sets and even Storm Darragh didn't shift it!!
Glad there wasn’t a lot of damage Will some of the images on the news were so devastating. 1:55 hopefully the grapevine doesn’t rip the net. Yes rhubarb will be fine you can mulch it with some manure or just leave it. My field beans didn’t do anything either so I’ve sown more in pots. Hope the wind settles down and you have a great week, Ali 🌞🥶🇨🇦
Thank you, I was lucky with the wind damage it was much worse in other areas. The field beans feel like a waste of time 😞. I will look to add some manure to the rhubarb. 🌱🙂
😊👍
🙂🌱
New sub here yes for fruit when its brown cut back just raspberry got to watch 2 different fruiting varieties happy gardening Richardx
Thank you so much for the sub and reassuring words with regard to cutting back. Thanks for sharing 🙂🌱
