A Tribute to Gail Hopfer
In this video I am playing tribute to my "big" sister. She passed on 10-3-2024. I now have her 2 accordions and just finished adding the last "touch" to her brown accordion that she used at the Sagebrush Round-up in 2010.
The song that I am playing (I Never Knew Polka) is one that she often requested me to play when I would get out my accordion.
Interesting side note: The last "touch" for her accordion was a new set of brown accordion straps. I ordered them and they were to arrive 10-16-2024. Gail was laid to rest on 10-11-2024 and when we got home the postman delivered the new straps - days early. Interesting!
I hope you enjoy my tribute song to my sister and check out her playing at the Sagebrush Round-up here: th-cam.com/video/I6ezy2iYLCc/w-d-xo.html

Gail - remember the pillow about smiling because I am your brother, and laughing because there was nothing I could do about it? Well, it is my turn to be smiling and laughing (after the tears).

      Thank you for viewing my videos. That is a great question. The short answer is: Yes, you need to change the bellows curve setting. Here is a link to a video that I did about setting the bellows curve on the FR-1x. If you go to the 2:30 mark, you will see how to make the change. If you want the change to be permanent, you need to save the system settings. Here is the video for the bellows curve: th-cam.com/video/7nfFfeS1s_I/w-d-xo.html

      Thank you for viewing my video and the wonderful comment! The backstrap is an interesting story. It turns out that I usually can't get the straps to work that come with accordion shoulder straps - my arms simply don't like to reach back to connect them and I really don't want to try to lift the accordion over my head to get it on. As you know, a backstrap is needed if you do much playing while standing or walking. For me that is not a problem because I almost always play sitting down. I found with my FR-1x the shoulder straps would fall down and really caused a problem when playing. I ended up making "something" from the straps I had around the house. I think you could use Backpack Chest Strap. You will need to check the length you need them to be. I saw them on Amazon for 7 dollars. I wish I could give you a link, but I simply made mine from "spare parts".

Thanks Joe ...have a nice day...and keep playing... musical greetings from Robert..

      Hi Robert - Thanks for viewing my video! It sounds like your accordion is in fixed mode (low, med or high). If you go to the bLC in the parameters list you will be able to change that by using register 1 or 2 (depending on which way you want to go). I like it to be set at 4 for extra light. Once that is done and you turn the power off, it will go back to the way it was when you first powered up the accordion. The good news is that you can save the setting before you turn the accordion off. After you made the change (and before turning it off), press and hold the Select button (you press and hold this while you are still in the parameters list). You will see Urt, select register 2 and the screen will say y.e.s. Press the enter button and it will save the settings. Now when it is turned off and back on, the settings will be what you selected before. I hope this helps. If you need more information, my email address is: jpkarwoski@gmail.com

    • @joekarwoski
      @joekarwoski หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for viewing and the comment/question. I am a little confused by the question, so I will give it my best. I looked in my manual at 13.5 and it is the palm bar, I don't think that is what you wanted. It simply allows you to select the register that you want the accordion to go to. By default it will send you to register 8. If you have orchestral on (or organ), it will simple turn those off and give you the accordion only. The other item deals with playlists. If this is the question, the options are Off, Stop or Play. Off means that it is off and you will need to select it manually. Stop means that at the end it will stop playing but move to the next selection (you will need to start that manually). Play means that the next selection will start automatically. You may also use the Repeat option. This will really only work if you set the Chain to Play. I hope one of those is what you needed. -Joe

    I have a Roland FR-3X V accordion. I have programmed the user sets 1 thru 4 to allow quick change, master and musette for gigs. The explanation here also applies for FR-3X accordions. Taking the 30 or so ethnic accordion sounds available and the ability to program the sounds to what kind of pieces you play at a gig is so cool for these Roland accordions. Your post was really informative. I have always used the User Set function to just do a quick switch on the fly for my most used sounds. An explanation for the detune of the middle reeds that you did here is pretty good. This kind of iteration is an accordion players "wet dream" (pun intended). Thank you for posting.

      @joekarwoski 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Rinty, Thanks for watching my video and commenting. I am not exactly what you mean by "crazy mode", but I am going to give you two things to try. This first thing is to turn it off, take out the batteries and then use the power supply to see if that takes care of the problem. I had a problem when my first set of batteries got "weak" (not low in power, but weak from age). My FR-1x did "crazy" things - it even play the wrong notes. Everything worked fine when it was on the ac power unit. Once I got new batteries, everything worked again. The second thing I am going to tell you to try is to turn the accordion off, hold the Orchestral Bass, Orchestral Chord and the Free Bass all at the same time while turning the accordion on. This will reset the sensors and may clear up some "crazy" things. I hope one of the two will work for you and fixes the problem.

      @@rintysmusic6651 There are two more things you can try since the problem is with the bass side. Try changing the Bass and Chord Mode (bCN). The default setting is 1, which will give you the two rows of base and four for the chords. You may have changed it by accident and this setting is not reset with a factory reset. If it is a problem with the Free Bass Mode, then change that setting (Fbn) to the default of 1. I am hoping one of these will take care of the problem for you. Let me know.

    I’ve been playing a Hohner Corona II for about 20 years mostly playing Norteño and TexMex. How can I program the Roland accordion to have it so I can program the bellows to make 1 note when going in and another note when going out. Also, can I program what notes the buttons will have so it will play like the Hohner?

      Hi Robert, Thanks for watching my video. That is an interesting question and I believe it will be my next video - thank you! I am going to start the short answer with - the manual is confusing on this point. They talk about transposing with octaves and also keys. That being said, you can change the octaves and save them in the User Programs. This will allow you to "jump" up and down the keyboard with the touch of a button. If you are talking about changing the key (which is what I think you are asking), that is not as easy to do. You can change the key to say "A", then you must save the system setting to keep this change. It is kind of being able to have a "C-trumpet" or a "B flat trumpet". There is a way (not a good way) to change the key with the registers, but I don't think the process is very good. This will be easier to show in the video, which I think will be out sometime this week.

    Hi Joe. I thoroughly enjoy your videos, they are so informative. I play a Roland FR4X and I'm very happy with it. The editor is easy to use and I enjoy programming the Accordion and editing my own sounds. I recently bought a Roland FR1X as I need a small Accordion when I play on the festival circuits in the summer. However I'm having trouble saving the edits that I make like Orchestra touch, Program Change TX and Midi TX. Am I right in thinking this small accordion does not save all the edits like the bigger Roland accordions do? I.e the FR4X & FR8X. Kind regards.

      Hello and thank you for viewing my videos. I am so glad that you find them informative. I am not sure what you mean when you say "save all the edits like the bigger Roland", so I am going to take a "stab in the dark". You are correct, the 1x is very limited compared to the the 4x or 8x. For example, a lot of the edits are global and you need to save the system setting to keep the edit, and then it will not change again until you go in and change it. The User Programs are very limited, in that they only save about 40 settings. That being said, the 8 User Programs with the 4 User Programs makes this guy a great addition for festivals.

      @@joekarwoski Hi Joe - thank you for your prompt reply. It is much appreciated. Yes, you are right. My problem is exactly that. I am not able to save the system setting to keep the edit. Would you be kind enough to advise me how that is done on the 1X? These are the problems I need help with: 1) Adjusting the touch sensitivity on the 1X, and then saving the adjustments. 2) Program Change TX - When using a midi module the 1X changes the sounds on the module - I need to be able to stop the 1X doing this, and be able to save the adjustments. 3) Saving changes I make on the Bellows adjustments. I use a lot of orchestral sounds such as pianos, guitars, Strings, and bass on the 4X and would like to replicate those on the 1X. I need to be able to make adjustments that makes the touch sensitivity almost non-existent. I make adjustments to the touch sensitivity and turn the accordion off. When I return to the accordion later, I find that my adjustment has not saved. Because I use a lot of orchestral sounds I use the bellows for expression I need to be able to save the adjustments I make to the bellows. This is how I use the 4X and I would like to replicate this in the 1X. I was led to believe rightly or wrongly that on the 1X some of changes cannot be saved. Thanks again for your help it is much appreciated. Kind regards Rinty

    Hi Joe, I wanted to reach out to thank you for your amazing TH-cam videos. Your explanations are the best, and because of you, I purchased a Roland FR-1X. Playing the piano accordion has been a long-time dream of mine, and this is my first instrument. I’m following your step-by-step videos on setup and settings for the Roland FR-1X, and they have been incredibly helpful. As a disabled person, I wanted to get a light piano accordion, and your recommendation has made me so happy. I really appreciate your guidance. I have a few questions and would greatly appreciate your advice: Could you recommend any online resources or tutorials specifically for learning the basics of playing music on the Roland FR-1X? Unfortunately, I couldn’t afford the Dale Mathis Edition from Kraft Music Store due to the higher price. Do you have any suggestions for other sound sets I can install? I’m not sure how to reach out to you for more tips. Is there a way I can send you an email? I prefer not to share a lot of information online publicly. Could you please share your email or another way to contact you? Thank you so much for your help and inspiration! Best regards,

    • @joekarwoski
      @joekarwoski 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a great question! The short answer is "No, you can't import the F-Folk (32) set". There is a way to "create" the set and then work with it. Here is how you can do it (I think I will create a video to show how to do this). The basic idea is to use the editor and then select the type (32) that you want and then "create" the set. I will try to do this video this week. Thanks for the great question!
