Modern Craft Mead, Raw Honey, Whole Local Food
Dave and I established Backed By Bees out of our shared passion for preserving both the people and land that sustain our local food and drinks. From flower to hive to bottle, we prioritize understanding our ingredients and keeping them as close to nature as possible. This approach allows us to confidently discuss our mead, honey, and farm goods, while also ensuring responsible stewardship of the land for future generations to cherish. And of course, we always strive to have a bit of fun along the way.

Very educational Dave... Backed By Bees is a great place to learn and connect with the amazing world of bees!
Thanks @Quinndiver. Any day we get to chat bees is truly a good day! Always helps when the bees are in a good mood too
Thanks for this vid. Have my order in for one nuc. Not sure when my order will be filled. Our weather here? Isn't "bad" its sometimes gray, sometimes sunny. What do you mean by wait for the weather to clear. We've been having WEEKS of nothing but gray and cloudy weather. I can't wait for my weather to clear. Please be more specific on how to handle weather. Thanks.
Thanks for this much needed! Quick question I’m getting a nic it has 2 slides of bees 2 slides of food for 250$ Canadian bucks I was wondering if I would harvest the first year or do I leave that for the bees for food? Also I know I gotta give them the sugarwater and im gonna plant a lot of wildflowers for them in the field @ my house so they don’t try to go too far looking for stuff but should I just keep splitting them each year also and buying a new queen and set more boxes nearby or should I just purchase another nuc next summer as to not stress out the first hive.. I just don’t wanna stress them out or put them in a situation they won’t recover from..thank you in advance
Hi Caleb Lots to unpack there. As always, nothing is a given, but depending on the weather conditions and genetics of the bees you may be able to harvest honey year 1. Leave everything in the brood chamber and harvest the surplus! When it comes to splitting vs adding nucs, all depends on what you would like out of your bees in a year and how advanced you wish to get with your bees. In general, its unlikely you will be able to split your nuc in the first year, especially if you are installing the nuc into new equipment that hasnt been drawn yet. Adding a nuc is a solid way to increase hives. Enjoy beekeeping. Sounds like they will have a fantastic area to forage!
@@backedbybees thank you very much you just laid a lot of my questions to rest.. I think I’ll wait till year 2 to split them not in any sort of rush to split rather would build them up strong and safe first just don’t wanna fail them as they will be counting on me to make the right choices for them
@@caleblandry1780 Sounds like a good plan. Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions! Best of luck
@@backedbybees I will for sure reach out if Anything comes up or I have any questions thank you so much!
@@backedbybees hello again! I was wondering what the best mite treatment I could buy online as I get my first 2 nucs real soon and would like to order some before having them get here rather have it if I need it than not and end up needing it and having to wait for that to come in and delay the treatment for them.. I’ve asked a lott of beekeeper youtubers with not a single reply back.. was gonna ask you but don’t wanna be a bother especially if I could find it out without asking but I know you know your stuff really well
Have you guys checked the audio on your videos? Have to hold the phone up to my ear on max to get an echoey version of what you're saying. Could display this info in 20 seconds with a graphic
Love the colour of your hives. Very cool!

We are still trying to figure that out? But as the Meadmaker .. surely it was me! 😀
i couldn't find info on the website about the sponsor a hive package: is it still happening this year? please link me as I am interested :) thank you!
Hi Charmaine In the last little while we have really worked on the program and have changed it to make it more engaging for individuals. We have added a subscription to weekly beekeeping videos. We have also kept the option to personalize a hive. You can find the links to the programs here backedbybees.com/collections/learning-and-education Thanks Charmaine
