Samsung Buds3 Pro vs $5000 Stax Headphones - Sound Quality Review!
Update 8/27/24: Further tweaked eq: 0 | +2 | 0 | +1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0

TLDR: The Buds3 Pro earphones are THE BEST closed earphones/headphones I've ever heard, regardless of price (I've heard $2000-3000 closed headphones). The Buds3 Pro are also very well built, look great, and comfortable for long wear. HIGHLY Recommended! In a lot of ways, I actually prefer them to my "perfect" full-sized open headphone system. This is VERY surprising.
Full disclosure: I preordered these for $250 and received them on 7/20/24. This video is not sponsored in any way.

Please let me know what bothers you the most about the SR-007 mk1! My idea of perfection may be different than yours, but it's very unlikely you have my same exact system :) I hesitate to call this a review because the 007mk1 are no longer in production and difficult to find (in great condition). It's pointless to recommend a system that's not readily available. The headphones shown in this vid...

not sure if you mentioned this in the video, but how do they compare to the l300
@@megaxmilk hi! I haven't listened to the L300. I did own an L700mk1 for a short time, and it sounded on a similar level as the L700, although this was years ago. The most advantageous aspect of the newer Stax is comfort. The LNS are less comfortable because the foam is usually all deteriorated, so your ear is pressed against the metal grate.
I haven't gotten mine yet, I'm glad to have run across your review. I'll have to try out all of your suggestions. Thanks!
Hi! No problem! I'm still enjoying them a lot. They still surprise and wow me every time I use them :)
Thank you!
This was helpful. Thanks for the video.
I feel better now that what I brought is good earbuds can't wait to get them. ANC is there if you traveling so the bass does increase like any other headset which can be good because the bass gets diminished when traveling, and details in songs get lost anyways. At home use when you don't want to wear headphones you can use these. This review helped a lot.
@@alexsmith1207 hi! Thanks, I use them mostly at home and rarely during runs, so the anc isn't useful for me. I'm still enjoying them a lot; I'll do an update video after a month. They really blow my mind (for what they are)....

Having hybrid driver just wondering how well coherence between dynamic and planar, I mean the crossover between bass and mid/treble in your opinion?
@@harryrs5273 hi! I don't hear any glaring issues with the spectrum compared to my Stax. Nothing stands out as an annoyance, except it does sound slightly more anemic overall (along with the other descriptions I made in the video).
Hi! Just a small update on the eq after 10 days, I reduced the 2k bar to +1 (was +2 in the video). Enjoy! YMMV
I'm still waiting for mine to arrive. Great explanation from an audiophile. Thanks for the EQ settings. Subscribed.
To simulate openback headphones 🎧, listen to your music with transparency mode enabled. Regarding the ANC, this is important and very practical, because, instead of having to turn the volume up to 80-100% in noisy environments, you can listen to your music at 30-40% of the maximum volume.
Solid review. Subscribed!
I honestly didn't want to sound like a samsung fan boy but it's pretty much how i felt. I use powerbeats pro for the gym and I tested the buds 3 pro this week and I'm having a hard time going back to the powerbeats.
@@mrlang125 hi! That's awesome :)
Great video, I never say this, but you really deserve more subs. And thanks for showing your EQ
Useless sound review. Thanks
I had that same experience with the Buds2 Pro and upgrading my library to FLAC. There are some mixes of albums from the 70's that are truly phenomenal. There's some Rolling Stones songs that transport me and place me right into Jagger's shoes on stage. Obviously the vocals are coming from both channels so you're centered right there. Same thing with the drums but it's a little "further back" like they tamed down the percussion to not interfere with the vocals. But then there's the rhythm guitar on the left, the lead guitar on the right, the bass is on the right but feels like it's right in that pocket between the drums & the lead guitar. Then a piano pops in and it's coming from the left like where the keyboardist would be on stage. And it's because the Buds do such a great job giving space for each instrument & makes it easier for me to do that it takes almost no effort....so yeah, I do have those types of experiences I can only imagine what the Buds3 Pros can do. There is that upgrade to full 24 bit 92khz but at that point you're going beyond what the human ear can handle. They also upgraded with a 2nd amp which should provide a cleaner signal.
Hi! I trust Amazon Music HD the most because it's all FLACs. The 96khz and 24bit stuff is kinda nonsense, and I likely can't tell the difference between 256kbps and FLAC, but Amazon Music just gives me peace of mind that I'm getting the best possible.
Good content. Easy to understand voice and isn't annoyingly peppy.
Thank you for this video.
Just subscribed! Audiophile here as well. TH-cam algo worked on suggesting your video. Just got these as well. Haven't tried shutting off the Noise Cancelling. Just A/B bunch of music and yep, the soundstage opens up with NC off. Even the balanced EQ is better. With your EQ it sounds great. When you turn NC On bass goes up and soundstage gets tighter. Great video! Now we just need multiple Custom EQ so we can use when NC Off and when On.
@7:59 dynamic not the way? I LOVE DYNAMIC Will definitely test that custom out thou when my buds come in Got em in white 🤍🤍🤍 Thank you!!
Awesome video bro, new sub :D
Great video!! Preordered bud3 pro as well but unfortunately they got delay due to recall, can’t wait to A/B test them with my Stax L700mk2 + HGSSHV Carbon setup. They would be so worth the $$ if they sound anywhere near 80% similar.
Hi! Cool, let me know what you think or if am I just crazy :)
Thank you for sharing. Have you replaced or repaired the cables before? my cable is having connectivity issues and I am thinking about replacing the cable.
Hi! I haven't had any cable issues yet, knock on wood. All I know is that the wires are super thin and the solder points are delicate :o
@@longtech Thank you for the quick reply. Based on what I read on various forums, many people encounter this problem sooner or later. I am always weary when it comes to soldering that might introduce sound degradation.
Try to upgrade your source, especially the DAC…
hello friend, I recently purchased an AKG K 812, I’m very surprised by the sound, I have Stax sr 009s, Stax sr 007 mk 1, Stax lambda signature 1987, lambda nova signature 1994 in my collection, with the AKG K 812 it became more and more interesting to listen to, super headphones, I advise you to listen if possible
Hi! Thanks for your recommendation, right now I am still loving my 007mk1 system so much. I have no desire to buy anything new :) but perhaps one day I will get bored and consider your recommendation. Thanks again!
Weren't you going to do a blind test? ... Having done a few of those, I'm guessing it turned out to be a _lot_ harder to tell the difference unsighted. Still, it would have been nice if you were honest enough to report that.
Hi! Thanks for calling me out on that. I was going to do it but I became unmotivated for three reasons: 1) it'd be difficult to do it in a real blinded manner (I think I would need to get some programmed switches or something) 2) after all this time, the difference between them, particular in the bass prominence of the kgsshv, are too dramatic to be a placebo (it may be wrong, but I do have a sense for placebo differences) 3) even if there were no differences, very few people have my particular 500V kgsshv, so it won't apply to many. I do still have some interest in doing this comparison though. The last time I did it, for some reason, the fuse on the carbon blew, so that's another reason I'm unmotivated lol
The alcohol in the lens wipes is likely stripping the dye from the pads.
Hi! Yes, it's possible, I use the same wipes on my 007's pads and haven't had any issues with the dye fading. It's a very very minor issue on the sr-x9k; probably shouldn't have even included it :)
I just got in new pads for my 007 mk2 but I am afraid to break them taking them off lol
Hi! Yea, it's a finicky process to reinsert the pads. I wouldn't do it unless you have to :) it's pretty easy for me now, but the first and second time felt risky

Hi Long, great review. Do you know what the difference is between the SR-007 and the SR-007A? There are some SR-007A headphones ex Japan for $2300 AUD new. Do you think this is a good buy?
Hi, thank you, I'm still enjoying my 007mk1 very much :) I once owned a 007A (with port mod) for a short time and thought it had too much of an etch in the upper-mids somewhere. I couldn't stand it, but I've read that there are variations in the 007A's sound over the years, so I can't comment on what the more recent ones sound like. Unfortunately, high end audio can cost a lot as you try different pairs / gear, and there are no definitive answers (as it's difficult to find people who you can trust lol).
@longtech Thanks for the reply, Long. You're right it can cost a lot, and I think the most useful move is to demo gear when possible. Reviews are useful too but they only go so for when it comes to subjective preferences. There are some Stax models to demo at a nearby audio store but unfortunately the 007A isn't one of them. It might be a risky blind buy.
Great job!
Is there anyway to adjust the headband on these, elastic seems to be worn and they hang low on my head , I noticed the two screws that can be removed, but not sure if there’s anything you can do to tighten this up so they don’t hang so low
I had a similar issue. You can unscrew the caps and cut the elastic down so that it doesn't hang as much as before. I would take small cuts off one end and find out the perfect amount for you.
@@azamonde I know I can order a black one and they fit. I just love the brown color scheme. Too bad you can’t find them anymore …I bet you you can have a leather maker make something up?
Hi! I have this delisted video about how to adjust the loose headband: th-cam.com/video/TBZx-3xIX6w/w-d-xo.html
Could you please guide me on how to remove the dust cover from the SR007? I'm currently traveling, and from what I recall, the dust cover is attached to the earpads.
Unless your 007 is modded, the black dust cover is simply an insert in the earpads. Once you remove the earpad, it becomes clear how to remove the dust cover.
Would be cool if you could do an audio test
Hi @long, could you please clarify the difference in sound from the MK1 with and without the dust cover? I'm considering removing mine as well, but I'm a little apprehensive. Thank you.
For me, it's a "night and day" difference: microdynamics and transparency are much better. To a lay person, it may not be much, but if you want to absorb in perfection, the dust cover needs to go. I've spent an hour or two comparing 2 71XXX head to head with the cover and then without. There's also no drawback in the sound with it off (IMO, on my system). That being said, removing and reapplying the pads can be a real pain and needs to be done with utmost care and patience. However, once the dust cover is off, it's much easier to reinsert the pads because you can "cup" your hand right behind the leather to insert it into the groove. Maybe I can make a video of this. Later today, I'll take out my 71XXX pair with the dust cover again to listen to it. I'll let you know what I think again.
@@longtech Thanks, please let me know.
@@greenpips5593 I just made a video on this. I have a raging headache right now and will edit it later today or tomorrow.
Here are things that bother me about the SR-007 Mk1 (irrespective of chain) - Soft timbre, V-shaped tuning: this is what seems to bother most and for good reason. There are quite a few others, which are firmer, less coloured and veiled. - Difficult to drive, so it can be expensive to power, and even then, the following problems may not be completely eliminated: - Bass control: while far from being muddy, there are others with more speed, impact and control low down - Compressed dynamics: estats in general are like this, but there are some, which are better Of course this would not be a balanced view, so here is why it still deserves its reputation: - Subtly detailed, free of fatigue or glare: others that are arguably more reference can become unpleasant after some of time (tuning is also a strength, especially amongst estats) - With the correct fit (might be a bit fiddly to set up and the seal might produce occasional noises), it is comfortable for long periods of time (in line with its sound signature). - Great air (because of the lifted treble) and imaging: great separation and depth, vocals sound open Value: still seems to hold steady, with the contemporary SRM-717 it sits in a nice price bracket. Carbon is a nice upgrade, but it can be quite costly in relation to the headphones. In summary: nice headphones, far from perfect, but with certain character traits that can be very pleasing and captivating, for a reasonable price. Are you a fan of the HD650 but wonder if there is something similar but much more extended, speedy, detailed and open (for a lot more money)? You are looking at it.
Hi! Thanks for your thoughts! What I love about the 007's bass is that there doesn't seem to be a boundary to it, it just spreads throughout the room but doesn't feel bloomy or boomy. It melts into the sound and creates a lush foundation. Some people say there's too much bass, but I think it's perfect because it needs to perform with all genres, so I enjoy it for pop and hip-hop as much as classical. I'm the type of person who thinks that a single headphone should be perfect for all genres, and thinking that there are headphones that are good for one genre and not ideal for another is a cop out :) granted I don't listen to heavy metal.
@@longtech The Mk1 does have the right amount of bass in my opinion. It is the slowness that robs it from impact and precision, maybe with different pads it could be improved, but then it would screw up the tuning elsewhere, there is no win-win. I agree that it can be used for any genre, but I also don't find a whole lot, where its qualities would make it really stand out, that's why I am in limbo about keeping it considering the amount of head time. That is kind of another take on its main weakness, it's sort of like a car with suspension set up for comfort so it can go on rougher roads, but also not that agile or involving, not quite operating in that sweet spot between them. Sometimes this might still be exactly what you want, but not always. For instance when playing jazz, amount of softness can be distracting, I find the good old NB Lambda to be much more involving and faithful, with its own drawbacks of course. For me, there is just 'no escape' from an SR-Omega, which made me see all other big Staxes (007, 009, X9000) in a different limelight. Keeping the car analogy, it is like a grand tourer: involving but not edgy, comforting on a long journey, yet not soft (only a tiny bit, estas will always be like that anyway).
@@p_adam19 interesting :) I don't find the mk1 bass to be slow, but maybe I haven't heard enough fast bass to see it. To me, the mk1 bass is just the right amount of detailed, softness, and extension. When I only focus on the bass, my mind doesn't have any nitpicks. Wrt to softness and impact, I find on certain recordings at a "live" volume, it has the right amount of impact and speed to match what I'd expect to hear with my ears only. Then again, all my ideas about the mk1 are without the dust covers.
1. I myself don't like using/ build amp/ pre with caps on signal paths (input & output). Bass is strong but not open. I prefer DC amp/ pre without caps o signal paths. 2. Looking at your amp's PSU, it's likely the PSU is shared for both L & R channels. I recently assembled a dual monoblock headphone amp. Each channel has its own PSU. Both channels are separated. It's cosy. Whn I first heard the result I was shocked. The sound's stage is huge. Ths is the goodness of dual monoblock. 3. For DAC I use AudioGD R7HE MK2 ladder resistor. It's PSU also dual monoblock.
I appreciate your very interesting discussion!
review another headphone, please. it is so old.
Hi! I wish I had lots of newer headphones and time to review them all. I'll make another video soon about the challenges of high-end audio.
@@longtech how about iem? I like its build.
@@nickdual I've owned some custom iems and middle end ones. They're great, but I like to reserve my ears for exclusive listening sessions. I don't listen to music while I'm doing other activities.
@@longtech I think iems sounds aren't better than closed-ear headphones, right? but you should know that, iems build is better. I want to keep longer. I don't want to buy something after few years, it is broken easily like Chinese products.
@@nickdual I don't have much experience with closed headphones. My audio philosophy has been mostly to get 1-2 systems that I'm satisfied with, rather than collect a bunch of audio products. I treat my ears as a limited resource, so I tend to only use my ears to listen to my best system. Even when I'm driving, I'm not listening to music.
hello friend, you absolutely rightly said about stax Nova, for a month I listened to stax 007 mk 1, stax 009s, stax 700, stax sr Nova, everything sounds interesting in its own way, but stax sr nova the sound is right in front of you, the singer is singing, shocked by its sound, thanks for the great review
Hi! Yes, the nova sig is awesome, amazing value for the money in terms of sound. I don't listen to the nova sig much because I find the 007mk1 better in every way :)
thanks !
I really like the tonality of my Lambda Nova Signature, my 2nd favourite estat after the SR-007 MK1. The low end is a little soft & it is not the most detailed from the Lambda series, that goes to the Lambda Signature. But the LNS has a great mids, it’s natural sounding & an easy listen. It’s probably the hardest to power out of all Lambda headphones. Old Stax headphones are fragile & delicate, I’ve 3x SR-007 MK1 & annoyingly 1 of them developed a fault in the cable. So buying any of these is a risk, also the SR-007 MK1 is still probably the hardest to power out of all estats. That is definitely something to note.
More importantly what difference is there between the Mjolner kgsshv carbon and the JR audio version ? There is a big difference in cost and the components are different .
Hi! I haven't heard the mjolnir version. At this point, I am completely satisfied with the JR copy, after replacing the 4 large caps in the unit. I actually prefer the Carbon for my 007mk1 90% of the time. It has a more balanced presentation, rather than being overly bass heavy with the kgsshv 500v.
@@longtech I think my 007mk2 sound better because of the extra power over the Stax energisers my 009 also sound great .I think Spritzer builds them exactly as Kevin Gilmore the original designer built them and has close relationship with him .Have you noticed they do run hot !
@@martinslocombe2288 yes, my JR Carbon runs very hot (estimate around 54C on the outside), especially after I changed the caps. I actually unplug it every time I turn it off. I'm afraid of it catching fire lol
@@longtech The Mjolner has substantial heat sinks for that reason .
I really respect this video, you have been driven by quality and i would not be surprised if you told me your driven by good things.
Hi! Thanks! You're right, I am driven by quality and quality defines my life in many ways. You have great insight :)
Interesting review, thanks. Will get my 9000 in a couple of months probably, didn't heard them before, so kinda risky buy for me... But I own 009 for about 6-8 years now and I love them, compared them to a few versions of 007 and for Me 009 is better, it's just for me 009 is more close to "classic" STAX signature sound witch I fall in love since 507 model, 007 for me is kinda planar sounding electrostats and it's "not my cup of tea"... I also own KGSS HV Carbon, so really appreciate your opinion that it's good for X9000, but I still hope that they will sound great with my other amp, WooAudio WES, which IMO is overall (Carbon is bit better in speed and it superior in bass... WES is better in overall resolution, superior in timbres, and in all other aspects I find it better...) better sounding than Carbon, at least with 009 (IMO WES is awful with 007, WES probably don't have enough power to drive 007 as they should be...)... So again, thanks for your thoughts, will be hearing my 9000 keeping them in mind! P.S. Don't know much about a DAC you are usng, I may be wrong, but is seems not very "high end", did compare it with other DACs of higher price range? Again, I might be wrong, but according to my experience with 009 (I own dCS Debussy DAC), they are very merciless to any issue in your system, if 9000 is like that (or maybe even more so), then maybe some issues in 9000 sound is actually some issues in system...
Hi! Yes, I haven't owned any super high end dacs, but I have tried 6-7 DACs with the x9000 ranging from $400-2500 and find that the topping d90le is the best of the bunch. It's very difficult to eliminate variables in high end audio because we're often comparing subtle / minor differences that are also confounded by our poor audio memories. So far, I'm still in love with my 007mk1 + carbon + d90le, it's essentially perfect to me, I would prefer a little more brightness, but it doesn't bother me at all.
@@longtech Thanks for a reply. I would recommend to try 9000 and 007 with high end DACs (maybe some dCS stuff or Weiss), it might (or might not) change your perspective... It's also very important what cables you are using (I have a lot of different ones, like Shunyata Anaconda ZTron, NBS Black Label II, Voodoo Electra and others... they all have some pros and cons in sound, so it's a tough "job" to find best match in the system, but it also a fun part of the "journey" to find your ideal sound...), what digital transport (using macmini with a custom linear PSU for now, planning to change it to dCS Bridge in the future), what is power supply situation at your home (I have a couple of power regenerators), that stuff REALLY matters with the level of Carbon and 009, so it probably mean a lot to 9000 (probably to 007 as well)... But overall all of that it's don't change the conceipt of the sound of heaphones, so if 9000 is not "your cup of tea" in thes regard, then you right and should stick to the 007... P.S. I kinda hope I will not like 9000 that much compared to my 009, that way I can sell 9000 and buy dCS Bridge right away, and still have some money to maybe upgrade my vynil rig a little and/or just buy a bunch of LPs for it 😁
@@TheDragonOwen lol yes, high end audio can get silly. I haven't bought a high end dac because they're more difficult to return / try out. I wish more DAC companies allowed people to return or trial their DACs. So far, I'm so satisfied with my d90le that I can't find any fault in the way it presents what I think is just the music. I had a schiit flagship DAC where I thought the music sounded better for almost all songs, but after I while, I thought that the DAC manipulated the music to create a more grounded soundstage. I have little motivation to try out another DAC, but perhaps one day lol.
I use a Weiss dac 202 with my Mjolner kgsshv carbon + Stax sr009 it sounds wonderful .Should i upgrade the 009 to 009s ?
