If you really look at it dragon ball's main characters are driven by their selfish goals and if they dont have their way they WILL risk their life and others in various actions along the story

Vegeta does beats Goku in the saiyan saga. It takes 3 people and goku to jump vegeta for him to actually lose. And no, hard work always outweighing talent is not the theme of Dragon Ball, nor was that ever the case. The theme of that fight is that through hard work a person has the potential to surpass someone who is born gifted, not that they will necessarily surpass that person and definitely not that it will "always" outweigh talent. And that theme is never used again as a central theme of a fight after Goku vs Vegeta. Furthermore, Gohan is a hero, he is just not a "super hero", nor does it he have to be. Let me explain the difference. A hero is someone who is recognized for their outstanding achievements, noble qualities and courage, like hercules for example. These ware all things that Gohan has showcased throughout his life from a child into adulthood. A super hero on the other hand is a romanticized idea of the classical hero, in which a persona is perceived as a paragon of virtue and are beholden to a moral obligation to do everything they can for the sake of a society. So now that I laid out the difference, let me explain why Gohan doesn't need to be a "super hero". A moral obligation should not supersede one's mental health. This is the problem with super heros like spider-man. They tend to exist n a perpetual state of a suffering due to their moral obligation, and guilt. Why should you do something if only it ever brings you is suffering? Because the world thinks you should suffer for it's sake because you're fortunate enough to have power? That's nonsense. If Gohan finds more joy pursuing his hobbies and being a responsible parent than training in fear that there might be a potential threat he can't handle than I think it's a more appropriate life style than doing something you don't enjoy because of a mere possibility that there might be a threat you can't handle in the future. Now I agree that wanting to protect your family should in theory be the thing people prioritize the most, but suggesting that gohan should be training constantly or he's not prioritizing the safety of his family is like saying someone irl isn't prioritizing their family if they aren't constantly practicing martial arts or practicing how to shoot fire arms. It's not a very nuanced way of looking human psychology or ethics. Now I understand the frustration with Gohan being inconsistently written and that being the core of the idea that he's a disappointing character, but I simply can't get behind him being a disappointing character because of some arguably flawed social construct of super heroism that he fails to live up to in lieu of a lifestyle that's more appropriate for him.

In addition to the games mentioned I think it's well worth mentioning Disco Elysium. (Trying to avoid spoilers) The main character goes through a journey of working through their previous purpose, closing a chapter in their life and trying to establish what they are going to do going forward while also acknowledging their mistakes. No fail states and loosing a dice roll is sometimes the better path. Great video and I'm looking forward to your next one.

Back in the day, Goku was actually supposed to die when Cell exploded and Gohan was meant to take the lead for future stories. Toriyama facing difficulty in an attempt to continue the manga without Goku, ultimately gave up on the idea.

That's the problem with people watching Dragon Ball. Gohan was not meant to like fighting ON PURPOSE because that's what Toriyama intended for him, to not become a mere Goku copy. So even if its for the argument of having one fighter more just in case, Gohan isn't meant like that since the guy clearly says what his life goals are. And that's reflected in the story because guess what? After Moro, Gohan KNOWS NOTHING because he appears at Super Hero again. Broly? He wasn't asked to participate for that. Granolah? He didn't happen to involve Earth. Black Frieza? Gohan was not briefed about that. Its precisely because of stuff like this that its aggravating whenever people say "but he should be [presents example] and..." as if they have any say in the matter. Gohan isn't a hero? Obviously, he was never created to be one from the beginning. Is Gohan a failure? No, its rather those Dragon Ball enjoying casuals who call themselves "fans" that fail to understand his character.

A part of the blame also lies on the DB Fandom, DB Fans developed a cult following of Goku and Vegeta that Toriyama had to push other characters to the side in order to focus more on those two. I hope Toyotaru gives other characters more focus in future stories.

Gohan also degraded from having a very comprehensive, straightforward, slow burn, understandable realization of his power to being more akin to universe 6 Saiyans/Goten n Trunks when he finally got a power up that got him up to speed. He had earn his power, became more and more irrelevant, then he got a power boost that wasn't earned

Gohan and Peter are two of my favorite characters in fiction but one major thing Gohan has above Peter is the fact that Gohan is willing to do what needs to he done when evil threatens his home killing Cell, The Spice Boys, Bojack, while Peter will make threats and has the strength his willingness to look for the good in others while it has paid off sometimes has always come back to bite him in the ass and that is why while a true hero Peter Parker is in my opinion the eternal loser, he will sacrifice and sacrifice and his enemies will always grow stronger and comeback badder then ever while he will go on to lose everything he worked hard for. Now i get not killing is a major rule of being a hero and if he did New York would see him differently but that's why i can admire the Z fighters more hell goku even admits he's not a hero and in all honesty he isn't cause many problems are caused by his naive nature. In the end Uncle Ben's words have commended his nephew a life of loss and suffering one other character i can compare him to is Ben Tennyson who was willing to kill his friend Kevin when he saw the threat he was to everyone if Peter was put in that situation i doubt he'd be willing to make that choice

I wanna point out the Gohan tweaking meme too, which is fanmade but *HEAR ME OUT:* Cell blasting Pan is the ultimate lesson he needs to learn. He treasures peace but never truly stays ready to protect it. His strength demands consistency, yet he always fails when it matters most. Yeah, he’s the strongest Z-Fighter now, but for how long? How long until he slips back to his family and entomology? Goten is fine because he mostly lived in normalcy, but Gohan? There’s no excuse. And Piccolo understands this about Gohan better than anyone. Gohan will never truly learn that his inconsistency has consequences until he sees his world burn, like Future Trunks did.

It’s not impossible to write Gohan to be a happy family man, as well one of the best fighters to face off against inevitable threats. Goku and Vegeta aren’t model family men, but there exist scenes where they both spend time with their families and show love in their own ways. Where I think super fails Gohan is that he repeatedly makes the same mistakes he made against Cell and Buu. He could’ve been written to show he’s an experienced fighter whose learned from his mistakes and kept up with his training, but as well a loving father who cares a great deal for his family and has something to lose when any number of threats arise the cast need to beat. The turtle hermit way is to eat, sleep, play, and study alongside marital arts training to live a good life and make the most of your training, Gohan could’ve been written to demonstrate all of this through his positive relationship with his family, alongside his innate well of strength to find balance with his family and his responsibility to stand up to threats against the universe.

Honestly I disagree that Super mishandled him. I think not enough people recognize that the exact points you use to call him not a hero are what makes him a brilliant character, because he is flawed. He is incredibly human in that he is lazy and does not live up to his promises. not to mention its a direct continuation of his actions shown in the Buu arc after becoming lazy then. I do however Disagree with your assessment of the post TOP and DBSSH. He was lying to piccolo about not training and I believe even lying about the armor being heavy. He proved that he could still hold his own against the gammas which were well above SSB at TOP levels of power and his use of the special beam canon and his comments afterward prove he was in fact training in secret. I think him not sensing Piccolos power comes down to not seeing him as often and him being distracted, since it never made sense how that would imply him being weak. I think Gohan is still one of the best characters in the show because of his flaws and issues. In fact I say the same thing about super trunks who GUESS WHAT, had the same issues of laziness and power growth in his story. Plus he was trained by Gohan so there is even more beauty in that writing. Super did not do the damage many fans believe it did, and in many ways I think improved the characters. That's my opinion tho so challenge it if you must

With the Buu saga, I wish it was a combined effort in the end. I mean yeah the Spirit Bomb, but I'd rather it be Gohan, Gotenks, Piccolo, Vegeta and Goku, with the younger generation making some decisive blows. Sure we can keep Goku as the main protagonist if he fits that role better (he does imo, he is way to iconic not to), but like in Super, I think Gohan should be on a similar level to Goku and Vegeta, so that when those two are away, he takes the lead. The Boruto series is a good example of this, despite its flaws, I think it executes the father/son protagonist concept much bette(and Bleach if Kubo continues the Hell arc). And I agree, Gohan should keep up with his training. I also wish the humans had their own film so they can shine again (Krillin ,Yamcha, Tien, and Chiaotzu). I hope there is some kinda of villain that can only be defeated by human hands. Proving that alien strength alone can't protect the world.

The fundamental difference between Goku and Gohan is that Goku actively enjoys combat. Remember he let Vegeta live solely because he wanted to fight him again and beat him. There's a reason why "Hey it's me Goku. You look strong, wanna fight?" is a meme. Gohan does not enjoy combat in the same way his father does, despite the fact that he's very good at it. He's been exposed to and potentially traumatised by violence since he was a child. Raditz, Nappa, Vegeta, and Frieza basically beat on a kid who had no real means of fighting back against them. Problem is, Dragon Ball never deeply explored how these events affected Gohan and whether they made him dislike fighting. This could have been a genuine character growth moment for him where he acknowledges how he doesn't really like to fight but realises he has to overcome it in order to be the protector Earth needs him to be.

I genuinely believe, that Gohan was just messing with Piccolo in the beginning of Super Hero. Like, he was purposely hiding from him, what he knew he was capable of already. Idk, maybe I'm wrong, but that's the vibe that I got from their first interaction in the film. And, let's not forget how surprised Piccolo was with Gohan at the end of the film... Gohan has, time and time again, always blew our expectations out of the water. He's like the super great surprise character, who has an awesome trick under his sleeve. Who knows how he'll pay off again in the main story?

Maybe Gohan studies himself to death, and that gives him a zenkai boost!

It’s interesting to note that Gohan has done a solid job protecting the Earth in situations where the story has Goku CANT intervene. It’s when the story requires Goku to save the day that it’s a different story.

Cell getting to that point was Goku's fault.

Dragon Ball are in my life since 90s and I can't let people say a lot of Fake News about Gohan.

In DBS manga Gohan train since Black Arc in the Gravity Room he's always ready to protect the planet Earth.

In Manga Gohan fight 100% serious against Super Buu the Arrogant Personality are 100% Toei, Kaioshin Fault too that doesn't tell Gohan about Buu capacity of absorb Warriors.

Even with his Mistakes I feel Gohan are 10 times more heroic than Goku everyone know Son Goku only care about fights.

Gohan was also the only Z Warrior in DBZ who used his time to be a true hero as a Great Sayaman and protected a lot of innocents.

Gohan made mistakes too but I can understand he was a child in the Freeza Saga, Android Arc and was only 16 years old in the Buu Saga only a Teenager.

Indirectly Goku caused many deaths in the Android Saga out of selfishness, Goku could easily have used Shenron to find Gero laboratory and stop him before he created the Androids.

Let's be real out of all the Z Warriors only Future Gohan and Future Trunks are heroes, Goku made so many mistakes that if Dragon Balls didn't exist the humanity would have been extinct in the Buu Saga.

He does have Saiyan-like characteristics he enjoys fighting (though battles where lives are at stake are exceptions), married a strong woman, the strongest on Earth, and has a "beastly" rage when he gets angry. He also shows pride on some occasions. However, he has a very strong human mindset. He was somewhat traumatized-he practically grew up fighting against Saiyans. Even as a child, he fought against the emperor of the universe. So, this aspect should be taken into account. But would a human not sacrifice themselves to at least protect their family? Dedicating himself solely to studies is pure negligence.

GT Gohan learned his lesson and never stopped training even if the last threat to Earth was 15 years ago. Without it he wouldn't be able to battle General Rilldo and other villains who escaped hell nor would his Saiya power make Goku strong enough to defeat Baby and go against Omega Shenron until Vegeta arrived. GT Gohan is a hero.

One thing I think is crazy is, and I know how this is going to sound, but in the Tom Holland version of Spiderman, they gave Uncle Ben's line to Tom Holland's version of Aunt May. Don't get me wrong, but while it tsnt really entirely a bad thing for a woman to use the line, I think the line is more impactful for a young man if it is told to him by man who is that young man's father, the one who he probably looked up to all his young life.
