For the sake of inclusive conservation, NRT must improve in community engagement strategies especially on board selection. Some board members have never been elected or appointed by the local communities themselves. There seems to be political drive or influence rather than resident community influence, leading to mistrust. Case study, Nyiro Conservation Area. NRT to check on that concern. Otherwise they're doing good.

Really enjoyed this chat. Christian provided some great information around their conservation efforts, including great details around the collaring process. I also never thought about how elephants, particularly forest elephants, help replenish the forest by distributing tree seeds through their dung. Really insightful discussion!

The legend has died

Sadly Dida died today. Statement by Kenya wildlife service said Dida died aged between 60 and 65 years at the Tsavo East National Park in Taita Taveta County.

Keep you the good work and pls help Tsavo put 24/7 armed rangers to 1 big tusked elephant. Richard said that it is 60,000 USD per year to have a car all the time follow such an iconic behemoth. I think it is 30,000 USD per year if the car is less used and rangers follow mostly on foot. Let's make that happen!

Maknas and small ivory Asian bulls are low quality genetics. In a healthy Asian elephant population only 2% are maknas. Asian elephant bulls can sport ivory up to 3m in length and 73 kg each!!

Did you know that the longer the tusks, the healthier the elephant? Sukumar Raman (2003) found that the longer the tusks, the lower the parasite loads: "The parasites of elephants were mostly nematodes... Bulls with longer tusks had lower average parasite loads...Such a relationship between tusk length and parasite loads also has important implications for conservation...If legal or illegal hunting for several generations removes the most parasite-resistant males, there may be long-term implications for the population. Populations ... may become more vulnerable to parasitic diseases... Species of parasites that have existed in an endemic state of low virulence for several generations may then become a serious health problem".
