வரலாற்றில் கோவில்கள் தெய்வங்களை கும்பிடுவதற்கான இடங்களாக மட்டும் இருந்ததில்லை. சிற்பங்கள், ஓவியங்கள், இசை நாட்டியம், நாடகங்கள் என்று பல்வேறு கலை வடிவங்களை தனக்குள் சுமந்து கொண்டு பல நூறு வருடங்கள் கடந்து வானை நோக்கி கோபுரங்களாய் உயர்ந்து நிற்கின்றன. இந்தக் கலை வடிவங்கள் மக்கள் வாழ்க்கையோடு பிணைந்தது. நெடுங்காலம் இம்மண்ணில் நடக்கும் அரசியல் சமூக மாற்றங்களை அறிந்து கொள்வதற்கு இந்தக் கோவில்கள் பெரும் பங்கு வகிக்கின்றன. அதை நோக்கிய பயணமே மெய்ப்பொருள்!
