Congratulations Nur <3
Great topic and discussion. I share most of your opinions on the matter.
Great Episode again and I absolutely love the subject. Sharks are near and dear to my heart as well, plus this is a really important subject to talk about. Ultimately everything that generates money and therefore gives Sharks a higher value alive than dead is helpful, as long as it doesn’t hurt the animal and is done properly. With a set of ground rules for the divers and an experienced and respectful handler, just like Matt said. This is important because there are popular shady shark fishing competitions out there and also a lot of anger due to depredation, causing people to want to hurt them and this hurts the whole population. Humans generally don’t co-exists well with large predators, we have lots to learn in that aspect. I’m familiar with the situation in Washington and a group of divers are apparently collecting data in cooperation with the Seattle aquarium. They dive rebreathers and take the bait to a specific spot (with scooters) that is further away from the most popular parts of the dive site, but still. I have seen the group enter the water on several occasions and I do not know their level of training when it comes to handling the sharks, but believe it’s mainly citizen science. This causes other people to want to do this too and that is where things get sketchy. We have seen pieces of bait scattered over the site so it definitely happens. The sharks are not taken seriously, because they are so calm. Though there have been videos of people touching a sixgill and as a result the shark whipped around and the diver almost got bit. It’s concerning. Being respectful towards these amazing fish goes a long way and it would be great if it became more of a priority. Also in my unpopular opinion, everybody who dives at the site during the season, would benefit from learning as much as they can about shark behavior, read their body language to be able to assess the situation. They definitely should not try to feed / touch / crowd them, or take their calm demeanor for granted.
I think there should be a distinction between types of baiting. Chumming the water dumping pails of fish parts over the side is different than putting out an enclosed, scented bait. I've had great shark trips in the Bahamas over the past 20 years and all these boats, whether it was the Shear Water or Aggressor, always focused on safety. These operators are different than the dive shops that take people out for a shark dive, line divers up in a circle on their knees, and put on a show.
Great talk as usual, gents! A couple of years ago, I went out with an operator in Australia to see the great white sharks. Like you said earlier, bait was only used to create scent in water, and if a shark catches the bait, their rule was not to throw any bait in water for at least 30 minutes. During the trip, the staff also gave a presentation to educate all the guests on how magnificent these sharks are. I was already an admirer of sharks before the trip and came back with more knowledge and bigger admiration.
Very interesting topic guys! Thank you for bringing it! I have a doubt that has nothing to do with the topic, but I dont know who else could know It better : Do you know if the new Tamrom 90mm 2.8 macro fits in the nauticam's port for the Sony 90mm? I am using the Sony a6700. These lens seem to be incredible (and cheaper than the 90mm from sony) Greetings from Canaries!
The physical dimensions appear to be very close to identical if i recall correctly so they should be able to use the same port!
@@matthewsullivan4026 I guess I'll have to give it a try then 😶🌫
Your like button is not working.
Alex - I believe like myself, you are also shooting with the Sony camera body - with the FCP-1 the favorable Sony lens is the 28-60mm, is that what you are shooting with? Given the compatible lens for the FCP-1 - is there another brand lens (Nikon, Cannon) you would rather use with an adaptor, or you've seen others use with favorable results with a Sony body?
The only other Sony lens I have tried with the FCP is the 28mm prime. I do feel that the FCP performs slightly better with the Nikon 24-50mm than it does with the Sony 28-60mm, but it is marginal. Certainly not motivation to use an adapted lens. One main attraction of using the FCP is being able to shoot native Sony lenses.
One of the best episodes of The Underwater Photography Show - very informative, inspiring and thought provoking. Thank you both. Just order my book as well😊
Great to see all the new videos! Lovely book, with all those GOAT images …pretty mind blowing. Another addition to the “must order” list for sure.
Good to see and hear you from SFUPS!!!
Great Video, and great timing. Very entertaining, thank you. :-) Supercool to hear about both of your diving adventures. I wish I could have been at the meeting for the presentation with SFUPS, glad they always record them though. So watching it after the fact is not a problem. Freshwater habitats are wonderful and very underrated, I’m a big fan!
NCUPS for the win. Would love to have you come back and give this talk.
I’d be happy to :)
"whale people..." - Matt does that make you "snake people?"
Yes it does!
I really enjoyed this one.
Great episode!
Very enjoyable episode
Such a great episode!
Thanks. We definitely want to get guests on more regularly. Scheduling has always been a challenge, with Matthew and I already in different time zones, and the guest probably in a third. So I think we will do more of these where one of us interviews - and then we'll be able to get the organised more efficiently.
Richard!!!
Great photos and explanation ❤
Perfect Timing for a new Video; I caught a bug on my flight from Europe and tweaked my back this morning, so this is a saving grace. I think this is the official clue to kick back and get some rest. Lol Great book btw, I have been looking at it for ages, but now I’ll have to buy it after November. 😊
This is the MOST boring, unremarkable and amateurish set of UW photographs I have seen. I can't believe that they were actually submitted to the competition let alone winning anything. Gosh, I feel that if I took a picture of my big ugly toe underwater, I would have won the top prize there. Very disappointing, I won't remember any of these photos 10 minutes from now. That's really bad.
The first photo is terrible. I can't believe it won anything.
Always a great conversation on this competition! Enjoyed the insights gents
Congratulations to the winners! I agree with you guys that the Wildlife Photographer of the Year loses a lot of magic awarding pre-winning images. I prefer the “old rules”: non awarded images and no time limit… thanks for the videos 👋👋👋
Totally agree with Matt & Alex. Very underwhelming collection in the UW category, although I do really like Matty Smiths winner. I feel disappointed as an underwater photographer that the category didn’t ‘wow’ me. But on the plus side it gives us all hope for future years! 😂
Except from the first picture that I think is really good, I am really confused with the winning pictures. I totally agree with you that winning pictures cannot be win again. The conclusion of this is good picture doesn’t need to win a competition to become a good picture
A great run down on the selected images and the critiques.
Great seeing you guys again! Fun video and great images, very interesting to get your 2 cents on them.
Challenge accepted!:)
They ship to Spain from Amazon UK so it's already purchased <3
Waiting for availability from Amazon Australia
Congratulations Matthew 🎊
Waiting the follow up of UP Masterclass. I loved the original.
It will come one day. I wrote about 1/3 of it at the start of last year. Then it got put on hold for 52 Assignments. But I will definitely finish it one day!
Its file name is UWP on my computer!
Congratulations for your new book. Pre-ordered via Amazon, should arrive to my home in Spain on october the 15th.
Will this be available in pdf please ?
I've asked the publisher and they a digital copy will depend on demand and sales - both whether they will do it and how quickly. If it goes down well that will increase the chances. As will people commenting about wanting a digital copy. I want a digital copy. I think a digital copy is really important for underwater photographers who tend to be spread around the world and living in places (like on boats) where it is not easy to get a physical book (even a small one) delivered.
I love it
Pre-ordered. I can't wait to try the assessment during my next trip in Madagascar... it's a pity it will be released when I am on the Red Sea..
The publisher really hoped it would be available in early September, but there was a shipping delay. Now it will be out in October. I just ran an Indonesian workshop where we did daily assignments and it worked really well. It was a good test of the book. Some of those assignments were direct from the book, some were ones that weren't in the book.
Genius
Love this, really looking forward to when they actually ship. If I understood correctly this will still take a while since I live in the US and not in Britain?
Hey Alex, congratulations on the new book. I love your “masterclass” book. Will there be digital versions? I’d really like to have both on my tablet when I’m traveling.
I am sure there will be. I will check on Monday when it is coming out.
I've asked the publisher and they say it will depend on demand and sales - both whether they will do it and how quickly. If it goes down well that will increase the chances. As will people commenting about wanting a digital copy. I want a digital copy. Anyway the book is not that big or heavy - and give in costs less than a small tube of o-ring grease, you could always buy one for a trip and leave it at the dive centre to save weight when coming home!
@@Alex_Mustard Thanks a lot for checking. I’ll get a hard copy and hope for a digital version.
Oh my gosh!!! Yes!!!! As soon as I read the tile…pre-ordered!
Thank you!
Congratulations, Alex! I wish you great success with your book. I'm excited to get my copy and tackle the assignments, which will likely challenge me in new and unexpected ways. Will you be releasing a Kindle version?
I've asked the publisher and they a digital copy will depend on demand and sales - both whether they will do it and how quickly. If it goes down well that will increase the chances. As will people commenting about wanting a digital copy. I want a digital copy. I think a digital copy is really important for underwater photographers because many travel to shoot, or are based in remote places.
Already pre-ordered it a few weeks ago in germany. I'm excited...
Thanks for the support!
Why does Alex think the R5mkII will be that much better for underwater? The main advantages I see, subject recognition focus tracking and eye tracking, don't seem to be applicable underwater.
Very nice video! Any lens recommendation for a Sony APS-C sensor? I currently own a Sony A6700 and I’m thinking about upgrading the lens I’m using now. Thank you
Same here!
Thanks for another great video! Great shots, Matt! You are a master light wielder! Seeing you underwater, I know how much patience, thought, and dedication you put into your shots. One of my favorite things about photography like this is the amount of time spent with the animals - you quickly start to notice behaviors, and the images and creativity grow with this knowledge. I love that some of your favorites were taken in our backyard, and I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who *accidentally* finds stargazers most times. I've always looked for their lures too, but never seen one. I did see one eat a large lizardfish once - its strike speed might be similar to a frogfish's.
i appreciate the kind words buddy, thank you :) thats wild youve seen a stargazer eat a lizardfish!
Great shots Matthew, the frog fish one is a cracker! Well done. Thanks for sharing the settings and how you set the shots up too.
Thanks for the video. I have an Isotta port they brought out earlier this year that fits the Nautciam bayonet mount converter II.
Again another great episode 👌
Love the Stargazer pic. So creepy and alien.
Yeah, real big thanks to you both for sharing those insights and techniques, really helps me learning everyday, on my commute to work :)
