IJN Mikasa 1/200 Scale, Pontos & MK1 Design Detail Sets, Part 39 Searchlights
This is a build of the 2016 Merit International release of the IJN Mikasa-1905 in 1/200 (Kit # 62004). Detail sets used are the Pontos Models Detail Set 23008F1, which is supplemented with the MK1 Design Deluxe Detail Set MD-20017. This is my 1st plastic ship so a lot of the techniques shown are being done for the first time.
In this part I replace the kit Searchlights with the Pontos parts consisting of turned brass, brass photo etch and cast resin light bodies.
The connection between the searchlight supports and bodies is not very good and ultimately very weak and was a source of frustration. The clear lenses are very hard and assuming they are actually glass and not plastic and had variating thickness.

    Hy, the parts 21 and 21b are the rails to pivot the gunn- you could paint them in silber/alu/Iron to add a 1/1248 of realism more to the nearly invisible parts of the kit.😂 The gunbarrels do appear to be shiny - it May be die to the fact I do use pictures of the older Adm.N. without turret covers - I do think to build her in her early days with some changes to the kit. Using an engraving I caught in e-Bay, this is hopefully helpfull. 😊 Looking foreward to more helpfull progress after the IJN ship from the plastic yard is finished. Best wishes from Berlin, Christian

    My fear is the later desintegration of the foam after some time - so I do think about cardboard stripes or balsa wood. What do you think.

    • @plungingfirescalemodeling2441
      @plungingfirescalemodeling2441 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for your question. Personally I don't think it will be an issue. The foam sheet I used has sat out in the open in my hobby room and hasn't changed at all. The foam used in the hull is only there to give a solid surface to stop the paper hull being pushed in due to my lack of skills. If the foam in the hull suddenly disappeared the paper would still hold its shape, after all more skillful paper modellers than me don't resort to additional fill. Of course balsa or cardboard stripes are viable options but the foam was quicker and easier for me to use.

    Fantastic craftmanship as usual! I, too, found it an adventure in trying to reconcile the instructions with reality. I differed from your approach in that I did not use the rectangular bases for the two lights that were installed on the masts, but otherwise my placement of the wheels/gears, etc is the same. Also, I used Krystal Klear for the lenses (as you had mentioned as an option). I was concerned that trying to force the supplied lenses might shatter the housing, so I built up the "lenses" with several applications of the glue. You're coming up to the finish line... some deck railings, rigging, boat gear,......!!!

    • @plungingfirescalemodeling2441
      @plungingfirescalemodeling2441 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Jim, thanks. Yeah with the mast ones I noticed later but based on the frustration I had I didn't have the heart to rework them. I might go back for final fitout. The supplied lenses must be glass as I couldn't mark them and knife points skated off them. Yeah nearing the finish line but still lots of little hull details to go. Still thinking about rigging and what to use.

    • @plungingfirescalemodeling2441
      @plungingfirescalemodeling2441 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for watching and the comment. They're just ordinary tweezers with heat shrink tubing pushed on as far as it'll go and then heated up with the gas torch to shrink onto the prongs, then trim to length fraction longer than the points. For normal handling they stay on fine but easily pulled off to replace. Heat shrink assorted pack from Jaycar, none of which the other sizes I have a use for but think you can get each size separately...I believe it's 1.5mm which is the shrunk size.

One question, why do you prefer Kristal Klear over AK Ultra Glue for PE, for example for the railings, the AK stuff is made for it and I personally like using it (you’ve used it before in one of the earlier vids). Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I'm glad you are enjoying them. Enjoy your modelling which ever one you choose to build. The Kristal Klear is just a personal preference, it just seems to work for me and I get consistent and reliable results. I like it's fluid but thick consistency and stays where put, grabs well and relatively quick drying. I haven't had much luck with the Ultra glue, I found the PE part would slide about and not stick. I might have a 'bad' batch and should maybe try another bottle.

    I like the sail colour. Were the actual boat covers similarly coloured?

      Thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure, I assume they are made of some type of treated canvas but only guessing.

    The sail colour is definitely better, and I suspect a more accurate depiction.

    Hi Captain Slog, Great idea. for those covers. I like the sail color myself. I have no idea which is more historically accurate. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. Jeff

      Thanks for the feedback. Not sure myself, possibly bright/light colours might be avoided to reduce visual detection.

    The cream colour looks better but needs to be dulled down in brightness. If you can dull it down it would be perfect.

    Hi Captain Slog, Great job on the little boats. You really do have an eye for detail. The only thing I can think of that might make drawing the curve on the bow easier might be to make a little spacer that fits over the pencil like a little disk with a hole in the center. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. Jeff
