Ella Janes knew she was going to be a director at seven years old when, in Los Angeles, California, she directed a parody mermaid film with her friends. Immediately after posting the parody to TH-cam, Janes gained 2.8 million views. This attracted attention from Adolescent Content, with whom she would begin directing commercials for brands such as Crayola and Goldieblox.
In December of 2019 in Oklahoma City, Janes directed her first official directorial debut: CODE RED.
After premiering in 2020 at the deadCenter Film Festival, Janes began working on her next string of short films, leading to her being awarded the Silver Medal at YoungArts, as well as other awards such as the New Talent Award at the National Film Festival for Talented Youth and a Student Emmy.
Janes now continues her work while she attends the University of Southern California as a Trustee Scholar studying Film and Television Production.

Happiness in the Palm of Her Hand (2024) (USC Film Accepted, Trustee Scholarship)
A young woman must confront her abusive childhood as she unexpectedly journeys into motherhood.
Starring Kinley Sharp and Livia Mills
A note from the Director:
I wrote this concept initially as a short story, reflecting my own mother's experience with motherhood. My mother experienced a childhood filled with alcoholism, physical and emotional abuse, and constant change. I remember sitting in disbelief as she told me these stories of my grandparents- the people I would sleep with when my parents were out of town, who always got me the best birthday present. She never talked about her parents with malice or hate- something I feel as if I would be quick to do- but instead, she spoke of them filled with gratitude. Although she now suffers from a handful of anxiety and depressive disorders, she wouldn't be the person she is now, let alone the mother she is now, without them. This sparked my short story and, eventually, my film.
Happiness in the Palm of Her Hand reflects a profoundly intimate and personal story of my family, with each event throughout the film completely truthful and realistic. With this film, I wanted to highlight the personal growth that is possible from an abusive home life and give strength to those going through it. Happiness in the Palm of Her Hand is a thank you letter to mothers who have experienced childhood abuse and trauma, thanking them for all the growth and love they have given for their children.
