The Wild and Curious Podcast Episode 025: Ock Pop Tock
Ock Pop Tok means "east meets west" in the Lao language. We speak to Joanna Smith and Veo Douangdala, the women who founded Ock Pop Tok, a company that hires local Lao women to create traditional textiles. Ock Pop Tok does tours, hosts classes, has a cafe, a gallery, and fosters cultural exchange through travel opportunities for its weavers, all with the goal of elevating the profile of Lao textiles and artisans. Jo and Veo tell us all about how and why they started Ock Pop Tok in 2000, the different ethnic groups of Laos and how they all have their own unique textile style, how their work benefits local women, and so much more.
Learn more about Ock Pop Tok and discover Laos through textiles at www.ockpoptok.com/ or on Instagram at @ockpoptok ( ockpoptok?hl=en)
They also have Ock Pop Tok TV (highly recommended!): www.ockpoptok.com/blog/category/ock-pop-tok-tv/ and if you'd like to listen to their podcast, tune in here: www.ockpoptok.com/radio/
And if you're ever in Luang Prabang, Laos, definitely visit the Living Crafts Center there! It was a highlight of Theresa's trip to Laos.

  • @user-db5ye9lh8x

My experience with the Dog Cafe was profoundly disturbing and I intend to report them for animal maltreatment and health code violations. When we picked up our dog for the adoption trial--at a time we had arranged in advance--we learned she was not up to date on her shots (though the website indicates this), nor did they have records of her shots. We also learned that our dog likely had Giardia and worms (which was later confirmed by the vet), which the staff member shared is common amongst most--if not all--of the dogs in the cafe. Though the cafe staff know that their dogs are sick, they don't work to prevent or treat them pre-adoption. I assume it is to cut costs, but in the meantime, these poor dogs are suffering from extreme lethargy due to lack of treatment. We insisted on testing for these diseases at pick-up (though it should have been done sooner), and had to repeatedly follow up with staff for the results. We did not know until a week into our trial that our dog was sick (the staff member did not follow up to share the results), and then had to undergo a month's worth of medical treatment with the dog. We had to visit their vet several times throughout the trial for shots and medication pick-up, which could have all been avoided had the cafe actually cared for the dogs in the ways they should be cared for. All of these negative experiences were exacerbated by the unprofessional communications with the young, inexperienced staff who seem to be in charge of the cafe (the owner never seemed to be around). Staff were unprepared for pick-up and failed to communicate throughout the process. When they did communicate, it wasn't timely and was almost always unprofessional. It's clear from my experience that the cafe is in no way interested in doing what is best for the dogs in their care, but in churning out adoptions as quickly as possible to enrich the cafe's young and absent owner.

I have 12 dogs and 8 cats...but I would go to this place as much as possible if there was one near me.

If no one is willing or able to care for them, well, they can't exactly take care of themselves (unless you want feral dogs). Sad, but true. Perhaps if spaying/neutering were made mandatory...but that's unlikely.
