Side by Side Comparison of Lead White and Alternatives using Vasari Mars Red
This video shows the mixing behavior of lead white and some alternative options. I also discuss some of the strengths and drawbacks of using lead whites. I hope this info and demo is useful. Happy Painting!!
Vasari is currently having their Earth Color Sale! It's a very good opportunity to try some of their amazing colors at very reasonable price points. Watch the Yellow Ochre video to understand why I enjoy using their earth colors.
***Correction! Rublev Venetian White is made with lead carbonate and Barite, I also use their Flemish white which is made with lead sulfate***

Heads up, sorry for video quality and rambling 😆 Here I'm demonstrating some different options for lightening up warm colors. Flake white (aka lead white) used to be my first choice, it's warm gentle way of mixing lends beautifully to creating mixtures that retain more chroma than the typical titanium white. There are some environmental drawbacks to using it (and toxicity concerns if you're not...
Yellow Ochre Oil Paint Comparison: Rublev, Old Holland, and Vasari

I'm just putting this out there for anyone who is looking to see differences in behavior between 3 top tier oil paint brands. I was always looking to find this type of video, so why not create a channel like this myself! Feel free to comment or ask questions. I too am always looking for videos like this, there is so little content about comparing oil paints. Very helpful! I have the Old Holland and Vasari and was looking for a new addition from Rublev, now I know I will pick one of their ochres that are less similar. Thank you! My most unique yellow ochre is the "Italian Yellow Earth" from Vasari, it is a much coarser grind than the stand yo and looks very mineral, bright and translucent. I don't use it much but its very special and I recommend it :)
Your voice relaxes my muscles. That's fantastic
You have an amazingly beautiful voice!
Thank you :) have a soothing voice nice to listen to :)
Wow, thanks for recs. Haven't heard of these before. Idk which brands would carry these colors.
I would love to get a semi-transparent warm white, that doesn't kill you like lead white.
Thanks I’m using a yellow ochre that is quite dry and gritty. Will look for these paints!
looks like santa has blessed me with a wonderful video this christmas xD ... I have been trying to find a white (without zinc) that is to my liking for a while now and I would have probably wasted more money on different whites without ever trying the sennelier T-buff. I mostly use the schmincke translucent white in combination with a MHarding titanium white. I also have a tube of iridescent gold and silver without ever even considering it in a mix. Great video thanks!
Only use Blue Ridge my super go to paint economical and a high pigment load 👍🏻
Yes, content like this is hard to find or non-existent. I would love to see more vidoes like these as i find them very helpful in deciding what pigments to buy from which brand
another great video
hi, really great info in your video. May i clarify something.. in your 3rd mix... did you say thats sennelier titanium buff, -the same one you said a friend gave you when done with painting?? thankyou
great info, thanx
Mars pigments are my absolutely favorites
Thank you!! While I love my vasari lead white I have been looking for a alternative but nothing I’ve tried can quite compare. That Sennelier titanium buff however looks like a great option. I just bought a translucent white from Schminke mussini that I recommend if you havn’t tried it. Its a very finely milled zinc/titanium, very transparent with a cool undertone. Its as expensive as a lead white but easier to get. I’t wont replace my lead white for portraiture but is a good option for landscapes.
I LOVE Vasari paints!
Interesting and informative Tank you.
Nice videos
Thanks this is the content I'm looking for! Love Rublev. I still need to try their transparent oxides too!
Oh good! Happy to hear that it's helpful! I just picked up Rublev's Cyprus Burnt Umber Warm and it is a new fav. Do you have any specific colors you'd like to see? I could definitely do one to show Rublev French Raw and Burnt Umbers and the Cassle Earth. Maybe an Umber comparison? 🤔
