The Igalas are MAJORLY a fusion of Jukun in Wukari, Yoruba, Edo around the River Niger confluence and Idah axis. There's also some Igbo as well. This is what the Attah of Igala HRM Michael Ameh Oboni said in 2017 Sunday Punch newspaper interview which you can still read online entitled "I am the Only Attah of Igala with One Wife." So, Igalas did NOT descend OR evolve purely from Igbos like many Igbos like to claim in several online propaganda media. Igala is largely a fusion of Jukuns (from Wukari in current Taraba) who migrated along River Benue and met Yorubas and Edos around the River Niger confluence leading to Idah. It is NOT strange that linguists classify Igala language as a Yoruboid language because of the significant presence of Yoruba-originated words in it such as: Ifa (refers to Ifa divination), Omi, means water, Egungun (called Egwugwu by Igalas), Ogede for Plantain and bananas, Akuko (cock), Ogun (Ogwu in Igala meaning MEDICINE and it ALSO means WAR in Yoruba and Igala) and much which can be Googled online. Igalas even have some links with Idomas as well. So, Igala came into existence as a fusion of different ethnic and linguistic groups. It was the Igalas that FIRST introduced the red chieftaincy cap into the Nsukka area from where it spread gradually to other parts of what you call Igboland so it is NOT originally from Igboland. The red chieftaincy cap is actually indigenous and widely worn in the Middle Belt states from pure Yoruba communities in Kwara and Kogi States, Ebiras, Igalas, Jukuns, etc. So, the Igbos copied it from the Igalas who brought it to Nsukka and that's a historical FACT.
