The Most Valuable Player Ever
The Most valuable NBA player of all time isn’t Michael Jordan or LeBron James. While you know that Jordan and LeBron are the two GOATs of the basketball world, they’re not as valuable as you think they are. No, we’re not talking about the kind of value that wins the Most Valuable Player trophy. Instead, we’re talking about the kind of value that turns a million-dollar franchise into a billion-dollar organization. And the most valuable player is a 6’2” skinny point guard named Stephen Curry, who helped transform the Golden State Warriors into a massive sports empire.
But what’s the secret behind Curry’s value? Well, let’s swish ourselves into the story of how Stephen Curry became the most valuable player ever.
Chapter 1: The Golden State Struggles
There was a time in history when the Golden State Warriors was the last franchise you’d ever want to be playing for if you were an NBA player. This team didn’t have the most successful history as far as winning NBA championships. Of course, they won the championship in 1975, but they eventually fell into mediocrity during the 80s and 90s.
People loved the Warriors during the early 90s, though, because that squad had one of the most entertaining offenses in the league. Relying on the running and gunning of Chris Mullin, Tim Hardaway, and Mitch Richmond, the Warriors were the most entertaining group to watch. Run TMC, the name of that trio, was one of the first groups of stars who paved the way to the faster pace we see in today’s modern era. But that trio never won a championship. In fact, the Warriors weren’t particularly successful during the 90s up to the 2000s. That was when the franchise entered into a dreaded dark age when they failed to make the playoffs from 1995 to 2006.
The Warriors couldn’t even win at least 40 games during those 11 straight years of missing the playoffs. It wasn’t as if the Warriors had bad players. They actually had good scorers who fit the very style that the franchise was known for. During the 2000s, they fielded names like Antawn Jamison, Jason Richardson, and Baron Davis.
They were making three-pointers and running the floor way before those things became trends in the league. But it was an entirely different era with a different style. So, as fun as the Warriors were to watch, they weren’t anywhere close to title contention. They couldn’t even make the playoffs.
The struggles the Warriors went through for decades were confusing because this squad was playing for a big market in the San Francisco Bay Area. If you know your NBA history, teams playing in big markets and big cities usually have the advantage against smaller teams because free agents are more likely to play for them. Big-market teams also tend to have higher valuations, allowing them to afford facilities, personnel, and other luxuries that should attract big-name players or help the team improve. That’s why the Warriors weren’t close to being the most valuable franchise in the league.
To put things into perspective, the most successful team of the early 2000s, the Los Angeles Lakers, was worth 447 million in 2004. The New York Knicks, who were successful during the 90s but bad during the 2000s, were worth 400 million the same year. Meanwhile, the Warriors were valued at 188 million. That’s not bad at all if you take it at face value. But the Warriors were worth less than half the Knicks, even though both teams weren’t exactly successful that decade. When compared to franchises playing for smaller cities, that number is even more surprising. In 2004, the Cleveland Cavaliers were worth 258 million. That’s probably the LeBron James effect there, but the Cavs were already worth more than the Warriors a year ago before LeBron joined them.
The interesting part here is that the Warriors have always been in one of the most valuable markets in the world. Northern California’s population may not be large, but it’s the tech capital of the country. On the other hand, a city like Cleveland has always been on the lower end of the midsized market list. But midsized market teams still had higher valuations compared to the Warriors.

I bet the Warriors will be a $20B organization when Curry retires. Such an incredible value just from a single player.
As of January 7, 2025: Golden State Warriors ($9.14 billion) New York Knicks ($8.3 billion) Los Angeles Lakers ($8.07 billion) Brooklyn Nets ($5.7 billion) Los Angeles Clippers ($5.68 billion) Boston Celtics ($5.66 billion) Chicago Bulls ($5.56 billion) Miami Heat ($5 billion)
Do you also know what’s massive
6:03 Steph never played for Dayton. He played for Davidson.
Curry can shoot threes, can he drive on anyone who guards him?
Do you watch basketball? If you truly cannot answer your own question then I suggest you start watching. It is amazing what this guy can do. That’s the reason he is on par to becoming the best point guard to ever play the game on top of being the best shooter ever. If it was just a spiteful comment then you can hold any opinion but if you strip the emotion attached to this, it is impossible to deny the objective truth that he single handedly changed the way the whole sports is played and destroyed LeBron James’ legacy as the indisputable goat. So yeah, the guy can drive.
We need to remember the value of the teams comes from us who spend our money on them. It's all about advertising.
That's true. But, if we advertise to the fullest, for example, Jason Tatum, or Anthony Edwards, can we get the same results? I highly doubt that. So, your statement is pure wrong, I'm sorry.
Trust me the Warriors valuation is going to crash badly after Steph Curry retires. They better figure out a way to sign Steph as an executive vice president or something which keeps his name attached to sales and etc. Once Steph leaves the Warriors are going to crash badly just remember what I told you. This is not sustainable because the organization is to soft and makes horrible decisions and are horrible leaders.
I don't in fact trust you, and your tirade doesn't persuade me to.
Well, GSW now has a billion-dollar arena to go with the other assets they have. Do you just not know how NBA teams are valued?
@@qqw743 Same here.
The warriors will continue to be profitable once Curry retires, the Bulls haven't done much since MJ left the building and are still worth 5 Billion.
The prior owner of the Warriors was the primary reason for their mediocracy. One of the worst owners in sports history.
I agree man..that is why I called him..the alpha and Omega of basket ball....❤
I wouldn’t even play games like that.
Underrated Wingman
🔥🔥🔥
That's why he doesn't get calls because Mike and LeBron were supported by the nba. The Warriors went against the script
This is why NBA has become boring because teams are running the same plays and everyone is shooting threes. The NBA has seen a decline in viewership over the years.
Check your stats source... NBA league valuation (based on viewership and revenue), is higher than ever.
Nonsense. The league has gone up and down but not in line with three point shooting. The league ran post ups almost exclusively in other eras and grew.
@qqw743 Nowhere close to the league valuation now!!
@byronjohnson8844 If you look at how many people watch the game now compared to the last couple of years... its dropping. Never said anything about revenue.
@@Gimik Butts in seats and eyes on screens is what drives revenue, both from ticket and subscription sales and from the almost obscene rates advertisers are will to pay for those butts and eyes...
