Double A Homestead
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 28 มิ.ย. 2020
Our names are Andrew and Alicia. Our goal is to produce majority of our own food on our property. We’ve been gardening since 2010. 10 years in the city and 2 years on some more land. For our 13th year we are finally doing it on our own property. Follow along for machine reviews. Also plan on videos on how to can, preserve, freeze, and cook. Gardening videos along with animals as time goes on. All things Homestead related. We hope we can help you through our videos.

Raising Meat Chickens On Pasture
Today is the day and we are so glad it’s here because I think one of the things we over looked having a homestead is building infrastructure for our animals 😂
Nonetheless we wouldnt change anything because we love what we do and we love our animals that we have on our farm regardless of how long they will be here with us.
Andrew worked so hard getting the chickens tractor together so we could have meat chickens this year. This has been a goal of ours and we have almost met that goal.
Thanks for taking the time of your day to watch us set our chickens tractor in place and keep progressing on the homestead.

Just install a locking collar on one of the cylinder rods so the ram doesn't came back allthe way. You can adjust it where ever you want it.
@@PainterD54 good suggestion. I’ll have to get some measurements and do that. I have enough wood to get us through this next winter also so I’ll be splitting more in spring 2025.
Who are you using for processing?
Right now. Our selves. We are trying to find someone that will do it in our area though, really don’t have time to do it plus no plucker yet.
@@doubleahomestead7794 Closest butcher that we have used is Smokin Butcher in Decatur. We have a plucker and have done our own as well, but it does take a lot of time.
@@aaronscovill5161 sound pretty local to me. If you got here from my fb then send me a message on there and you can come take a look at the tractor your self and test it out if you’d like to.
How are you guys liking your TYM T474? I am considering buying one, but not quite sure yet. There are not a lot of reviews out there from people that are not sponsored by TYM.
I have a video I did on it also. I think it’s titled how did we get this TYm tractor so cheap. So far I’m happy with it. 120 hours on it. Need to do another update video on it soon. I liked the 474 because it’s popular so parts availability should be long term and of course its ability for the price point.
That looks like a really great enclosure!
@@KrayZJoy Thank you! We appreciate that. Andrew worked really hard to give our ladies such an amazing place to live.
Appreciate this video. I'm going to do this. Ty.
@@francescohen8666 this was before I learned people show gardening videos on TH-cam so my pronunciation of DE is way off lol. But thank you for watching one of our original videos, glad it helped

@@bastardoazteca8094 good luck to you. Idk how many we had when this video was made but now there are 8 hens free ranging. 18 in the run. And there’s an additional 5 babies hatched by our buff in the run.
You titled this Playing Tag with the ducks. I lost, they gave up but I would say that they forfeit the win by giving up.
That’s a great point. We played again tonight. They love a good game of stay away from the big scary man when it’s bed time 😂😂 All in their coop safe and sound though. Every day is getting easier thankfully
I just purchased this mower for my homestead which is on a hill which this mower takes care of that without issue.
Thankiuu !
John deere good
I have heard the pinion gears are fragile and the steel stamping is too thin and to work on Cadets is extremely hard.
Bought mine through an online sale about 4 years ago. Has been absolutely problem free. (Regular maintenance)
I bought this model about 4 mos ago. Very happy with it, mowing 5 acres of wild grass. Handles it very well. It's in the shop now, as the oil drain plug jiggled out of the block. It looks to me that it was not properly seated in the block form the factory, as the first couple threads in the block are stripped and will not accept the male end of the drain plug. Other than that, I'm very happy with the performance.
Glad to hear you are liking it. Bummer about the plug. I suppose these things happens here and there. Always sucks to be the unfortunate one though. I was just out mowing the chest high weeds in the field yesterday. It’s so wet I can’t do it until now. It’s still going strong, I just need to throw some new blades on it. Think I’m at 80 hours of hard mowing so far
When in the wash cycle lower the deck, it really makes a difference
I saw someone else mention that as well. If I had a cement driveway I think I’d feel more comfortable doing that
Can you see the snakes tho?
Can’t see any snakes 🤷🏻♂️
Need to drop the deck all the way down.
What? It was at one point. Need some more context with your comment 🤷🏻♂️
@@doubleahomestead7794 Sorry I meant you need to make sure the deck is all the way down when using the deck wash. I have seen other you tube videos that showed it didn't work very well until the deck was dropped. Then it made a world of difference. I liked this video.. I just purchased one of these and this video helped me to decide, thank you.
@@mikebarron8702 that makes sense. I don’t have a great spot to try that at. Dropping it all the way on the gravel driveway doesn’t seem like The best option for me. But I can certainly see why that would help. Maybe I’ll have to find a way to try that. Thank you.
Lol this tickled me funny bone. Might have to swit h to liquid fertalizer Andrew lol
May have to lol.
Idk why it says 0 views. I’ve definitely viewed this video in via the Facebook link and in TH-cam
We just stopped it. Perhaps that’s why 🤷🏻♂️ They are all huddle up under the heat plate so I need to make adjustments to it as the temperature drops outside. The live should be getting posted to our videos so you can go and watch all 45 minutes whenever you want to 😁
I've got about .75 acre to mow and I think I'm going to buy one of these.
I’d say it’s perfect. Seeing some recent comments go with the 50” as it comes with the better trans
It’s a MTD with Cub Cadet color and badging. Stamped decks are horrible, the spindles are garbage. You can’t grease them unless you put a grease fittings in them. The best thing you have is the Kohler 7000 model engine and it’s not great. Maintenance is key. Be gentle and do preventative maintenance constantly and it will last you. If you don’t keep the blades sharp you’ll be replacing blades, belts and spindles. Good luck.
Thanks for the tip.
Awwww
Probably the most comprehensive video on any XT1 I’ve seen this week as I research. Thank you. I didn’t know the 50 had an engineered deck. I was going to get a Husqvarna Zero Turn from Tractor Supply because it had an engineered deck but I don’t really need a zero turn. Just saw my local TSC has this is stock. Think I’ll pick it up tomorrow. I don’t have the land you have but I’ll at least have the nicest tractor in the neighborhood. Thanks great video.
I really appreciate the kind words. We don’t get much out of these videos but comments like this, make it ALL worth it. Now that we have our big tractor I still wouldn’t get a zero turn. I’d buy this lawn tractor again. Thanks again. Enjoy the new purchase. You won’t be disappointed.
I bought this same mower and as of May 23 . 24 with only 35.8 hours on it the transmission failed and they want 1000 plus labor for repairs . . I'm not happy about this
No warranty?
Type that into Amazon. I did a quick search. It’s $750 but the trans is a tuff torq. I’m trying to do some more research. While doing my research it did seem this is the Achilles heal of the entire mower but so far so good for me. If mine fails I have nothing to lose but to take it apart and see if I can repair it. Unless Cub wants to help me out but you know how that goes. If I find another trans I’ll let you know CUB CADET 918-07207A Transmission Assembly Enduro XT1 XT2 LT LX 42 46 50 Tractor
@@RJJackson09 luckily it's still under warranty .
You have the XT1 LT50? Just did a little bit more research. Mind has the Tuff torq k46 supposedly. Then the smaller decks may have the TL-200 which is a weaker trans. I thought I had read a couple years ago guys were putting a slightly beefier tuff torq on theirs. I hope this info helps and sorry you are having issues. Please update us if you find a solution that’s cheaper
@@doubleahomestead7794 I like to know what failed in the transmission . It shouldn't have failed at 35.8 hours .
I have a brand new mower just like that and the quality of the cut is just terrible .. and my neighbor has the same more I have and his lawn also looks terrible. You know the mower deck design is bad.. when they make a goofy ass looking lawn mower blade like that to try to compensate for the bad deck design..
Ugh cotton wood fluff is horrid
And we have a ton of them along our driveway.
CHUNKY BUTTS Can’t JUMP 😂
Cub Cadet is pure JUNK no matter what model you buy , buyer's beware you will definitely have transmission problems and if you bought one with a Kohler Courage engine be prepared for a cracked block or oil pissing out. Pure junk!!!
When should I expect these issues to begin?
I had this mower for 2 years now with no issues. Just the other day, i picked up the owners manual and learned it has cruise control. 😅
I’ve used it a couple times. Been a while. If memory serves me correct you push down the lever you use for the parking brake while moving and it’ll hold that speed?
@doubleahomestead7794 correct! I only have 2 acres to cut but mine is 90% straight flat runs so I'll definitely be using it from now on now that I know how lol
super helpful review, thank you. where did you get that wagon attachment? love how big it is.
Glad you enjoyed it. Without watching it back, I believe that’s our ground works wagon that we got at tractor supply. I believe the capacity is around 800-1000lbs if I’m not mistaken. It was super handy around the homestead before we got our big tractor. Now it’s only used during gardening season. We have a smaller gorilla wagon that’s nice as well.
Thanks
Also throttle down then turn off motor with belt engaged
Why is that? Wouldn’t you want to disengage first as you want to start up with it disengaged. I didn’t read the manual so perhaps I missed something
The reason why stamped decks are thinner metal is that most of these companies don't have a big or powerful enough press to stamp thicker metal. John Deere's plant in Horicon, Wisconsin has a powerful press where they can stamped thicker metal in their commercial decks. Keep in mind there are drawbacks to fabricated decks, first is there are areas where grass can build up quicker since there is no rounder corners which will shred grass a bit easier. The more grass sticks to the 90 degree areas where the welds are, more corrosion will occur. Second, fabricated decks usually have thinner metal on top and thicker metal on the edges since they can't use one gauge of metal. A stamp deck that was pressed in the stronger presses has thicker metal all over the deck.
Interesting info. Thanks for sharing.
Everybody talks about all the finer points of this mower, but what do you NOT like about it, after all this time with it? Appreciate the honest answers and review.
Honestly, I don’t have a lot to say negative. The only thing that is frustrating is your knee can bump the key ever so slightly and it will turn off the mower in reverse option. I think I may just disable the safety switch so I don’t have to worry about it cutting out. No complaints though, I just fired it up 2-3 weeks ago from storage. Left the battery in mower all winter. No battery tender hooked up. No issues. I’ll pull battery to tender this winter though being year 3
mate, you need to wear a face mask and cover your arms, the soot you remove has cancerous substances within it, also put a waste bag under the flue and sweep into that, you don't need that soot going into your and lungs, please be careful doing this. I am chimney sweep and thats my advice to help you stay safe.
I bought a 1984 782 d diesel cub cadet it is a great running mower i love it
Those old machines just won’t die. Love it.
Nothing surprizing to me! I split the same sized rounds with my 5 ton Harbor Freight electric splitter!
That’s great!
I love you.
Hahahahahahahaahahah
Then you better be subscribed, otherwise I don’t believe you.
I have the 42 with the stamped deck. For the money I have zero complaints. I’ve broken a few drive belts so I guess I could complain about that but still worth the money.
Glad it’s working well for you
Watch out its godzilla 😂
Love it.
May be time for an upgrade from my 15 yo JD LA115 which I just replaced the head gasket on. What was last year's price if you don't mind listing? Just trying to figure out if the current $2650 price is actually a temporary sale or if it's a prevailing ongoing sale price to make it look like it's always on sale.
$2755.99 in July of 2022. With everything going up in price I would assume that it’s a legit temp sale. Hope that helps.
Thank you! Yeah I suppose it is still the promotion period of early season (no more free dump carts though). Lowe's is running a $100 to $200 gift card promo on the John Deere mowers as well. This Cub Cadet though is clearly the better (best in my opinion) value overall right now.
@@mattb9664 I can only speak for the Cub. But I didn’t have the battery on a tender for the 2nd winter now. Couple weeks ago I went out there and fired it right up and was mowing within minutes. Of course checking fluids and air pressure etc before hand. No surging or any other issues. I do run non ethanol in it though and it has stabil in there as well.
All it takes a single long stock branch to stop the blades and stop the engine. Don't ask how I know 😂
I believe the blades have been stopped on this one a couple times. This particular spot I mowed the year prior so I knew it was relatively clear. But our entire place was head high thick weeds and I found so many surprises like junk piles, random fencing, burn piles scattered throughout the field they claimed to have kept up years prior. It’s all clean now thanks to this mower
Cub cadets r JUNK cheap made don't buy!!!
You get what you pay for. They're no worse than anything else at that price point.
❤❤❤nice❤❤
Make sure that there are no hard objects or obstructions and that mower can certainly handle tall grass and green weeds. Just be careful because the spindles on those decks are not particularly strong and easy to break. I wish I had done a little more research on them but overall I’m happy with my mower. I have an LT50 FAB for my lawn work. I mowed the lot next door after we bought it because the owner neglected it all summer while we were in the process of buying the place and the grass was 3 feet tall in some places. Just keep the revs and your deck high and the speed slow. I have a Kubota L4060 now with a Land Pride RCF2072 and I’m about to get down and dirty with all the brush and saplings on the rest of the property. Wish me luck on getting that bear set up!
When we bought this place it was all this tall. Different scrap piles and burn piles everywhere. It took me 3-4 weekends on and off just going slow and being careful to mow a few acres and getting it cleaned up.
I prefer a Jon Deere any day over a Cub Cadet AKA Murray !
Right on. I think just about every piece of equipment I own is a different manufacturer.
I have the 2022 Cub Cadet XT1 LT 50. I agree with this young man. This is a nice mower. The only thing he said wrong is when he called it a lawn tractor. It is a riding lawn mower. A riding lawn tractor is a much different beast. You can easily look it up and see the difference. Cub Cadet makes them both. I advise using the wash feature each time you mow. Wet grass can really build up under mowers. Run the mower at high speed with the deck all the way down for at least two minutes. Run it for a minute or two after you disconnect the hose. It will help to get rid of much of the water still adhering to the mower. If you wash the engine, I advise you to let the engine to cool down. Cold water on hot engines is not advisable. Properly maintain this mower and it should last you years to come. Look up maintenance in the User's Manual to see how to keep this mower in top working condition.
Thanks for the comment. I believe you are confusing lawn tractor with garden tractor. A garden tractor is certainly a different beast. However this is considered a lawn tractor. For example search for cub cadet xt1 on blains farm and fleet website and read the description. I will also paste something right from cub cadets website below. The base model of the Enduro Series, the XT1 tractors are loaded from the start-equipped for mowing, hauling and using a variety of attachments. The CC30H would be considered a riding lawn mower.
This is a good video, very educational, thank you. I especially enjoyed the noises from your birds.
Glad you liked it. We thought it would be fitting to film it with them.
Why bother raising chickens if you are going to feed them the same glyphosate laden crap the factories do ? Ever taste an organic egg from a real organic farm. ?
So I decided to go back and do some more research because you are right, why feed them things that aren’t good for them. I did some research on feeds prior to this last year as well which is why we decided to use this feed. Now here’s some info I found just now. Producers pride pellets did test highest of several brands tested for glyphosate. However it tested much lower than many organic brands when it came to arsenic, mercury, and lead. So does this mean that the food being produced by other brands is just using another product that doesn’t contain glyphosate but one that isn’t commonly being tested for yet? If you recall grazon became a big thing in recent years. It was found the herbicide was making it through the cows digestive system and into the high dollar compost being sold across the United States. We know all of the things I listed are bad for you. So without growing your own food for them, how do you decide what’s the lesser of two evils. More arsenic and lead or more glyphosate? Do you pay double the cost to get extra arsenic and lead or pay half and get more glyphosate. We don’t use any weed killer on our property but I can’t control run off or what the previous owners did to the soil they left behind. So I just control what I can. Growing food for 22 chickens for 365 days a year is not something I can control right now. Have a blessed day and hopefully that info helps you as it did me.
