It's already too expensive where you are.

I am from Texas (born in San Antonio) and my family still lives there. I moved back there in the late 1980's - early 1990's, and lived in Fort Worth, Arlington and Dallas (north). I loved it, but it's WAY too hot. Houston is even hotter, but it’s hot everywhere in the south. LOL However, as a retiree, you can find a really nice home for cheap, but away from the bigger cities (mentioned above). The idea place is suburban ural. That will afford you peace of mind and an affordable home, but within an hour or so away from shopping, activities, etc. My brother was a cop in Fort Worth for over 4 decades, and I rode in with him many times, and I worked in Fort Worth at the time. Like anywhere, there are good and bad parts. Notwithstanding, if you were not born and raised in Texas, SOME natives may treat you differently. Hopefully, that won’t apply to the elderly, but Texans are full of pride!

You don't have to "fly over or drive over to Dallas" to see Cowboys (or the Rangers, for that matter) games. Both of their stadiums are in Arlington, a Fort Worth suburb located in Tarrant County, os which Fort Worth is the County seat, closer to the Cowboys's and Rangers's stadiums.
