Thanks for the awesome video! When you say high compression is that the 8.5:1 or 7.5:1? I have read somewhere if you want the 8.5:1 you need the 520 case? I have a 56 180! Cant wait to eventually do the upgrade!
I know I got the high compression pistons, I’ll have to look exactly what ratio they are, but I have the “K” model case from the original o-470
Thanks! If they are the 7.5:1 then 300+ hp is mouth watering. Would really appreciate if you could check that! Will help my research a lot.
I first saw this video when it first came out, since then I bought a 54, 180 with a newly installed 0-520 PPonk in it with a two blade MT. What a fun machine and way faster than my Supercub. I’m still learning to fly it well but am getting more comfortable in it. Thanks for your video.
Very cool! Sounds like an awesome plane, congrats!
Justin this is my first time watching
The 550 300 hp makes a huge difference on takeoff and landings
I love the Cessna 180s and the 185s
With those braces, wear a helmet, please!
Radios?
Most definitely, just got the bushies back on and ready to start playing!
180's looking good! Would love to see what sort of flying y'all got out west there. If you get the chance, throw a camera on for a ride this Summer. Fly on bro
Do you happen to have Bob’s contact? Thank you!!
If you send me a email I’ll send you his contact info, Justin@cookinlettug.com
Thanks to Steve and tommy for getting my A & P back in 1980
Thank a lot now my bank account evaporated about $4K. lol.
They are Expensive
Nice video. Thanks for posting
Thanks Mark
What cargo belly is this?
This is the pod bob Piatt out of Wasilla Ak makes, modeled after the Cessna pod but slightly shallower
A paint brush is suggested to use to save on that expensive rubber preservative. Instead of letting it absorb more on the rug and less on the rubber, and use the rug when cleaning. Viewer from Cebu, Philippines.
Get you a nice lithium battery so are so light and powerful.
Hi Justin. Got a 53 180. Have 29s now time for new ones soon. The 31s look like a great tire. Curious on Airspeed loss. Currently i can get about 140 MPH at 23 square don’t want to lose to much speed. Thanks for your reply
@Artiscrafty first off are you running a PPonk or O-470? Cuff kit or vgs? I currently get 136 with my PPonk/cuff/ vgs (all very draggy) and 31”s but I’m thinking you’re not going to see much loss. But I’m a huge fan of 31”s, my absolute worst landings still feel like landing on a cloud! Only thing to remember is to take care of them, check out my other video on bushwheel maintenance. Fly safe Justin-
Along with outside prep, in the racing world we will remove the valve step core and using a syringe, add several ounces of prep to the inside and roll to achieve desired conditions. If this is working this well on the outside it might be worth doing some research into conditioning the inside of the tire as well. I would also like to add we wrap the tires in plastic wrap during storage. As are most things in racing, this is a argued technique but less exposure to air and light the longer it should last. That is the idea anyway. Thank you for the video. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for the comment and the idea, the inside is a good idea, and wrapping them up is a great idea too, I’ll try that for my storage!
Excellent demonstration of the basic level in low ground effect takeoff and pitch up only when obstructions require our giving up that free acceleration energy. So many takeoff stall and loss of control accidents could be prevented by making this takeoff technique default. We never know when we have given up, by pitching up early, free energy that we now need for maneuvering to a suitable landing site or maneuvering to a hole in the trees or maneuvering to down drainage egress. Good job.
Thanks for the tip it will certainly come in handy.
You bet! Thanks for the comment!
What PSI do you run them at?
I’m usually 8-10 psi most the time
What air pressure you running?
Depends on my mission I think 8-10 psi
Justin......My wife and I will be coming to Alaska in the summer of 2025. I'd like to find a pilot that would take us out to hunt for glass floats. Is that something you can do, or direct me to someone?
@jerryb2375 I can definitely direct you, I’d suggest Kings Air out of naknek, Ak. But if you plan to come it’s 100% weather based, and expect a flight 2-3 hours one way. You have to put in some time, but once you get to the beaches that has them you’ll be in heaven having fun, the only way I explain it to people is it’s like adult Easter egg 🥚 hunting, it’s so fun! I would definitely help if I could but I could be at work, but keep in touch and if I can help I’d love too! J-
@@justinsalaskanadventures Thank you!!
Is the valve stem in the rim or tire of the regular wheels? That's pretty cool that the tire is one big thick tube, that explains how the wheel is so small and they soak up the bumps. Not a pilot here, so I don't know if the Bush wheels are a different type of rubber but I used Armor all because it's a big brand name for years on car/truck tire until I got some of the tire gel and what a difference it made. I have no idea how well it would preserve rubber if at all but it was an easy product to use wish I could remember what it was.
On ABW the valve is on the tire and not the rim, like that for a few reasons, mainly I believe so if you stomp on the brakes and you spin the tire on the rim, you won’t shear the valve stem off. Yeah this stuff is about the only stuff I’ve seen that make these tire last, thank for the comment and subscribing!
Thank you - I am going to try this on my new Airstreaks. I like this approach 1000% more than coating them with bedliner and spinning them while squeegeeing them. No place like Naknek!
Yeah that was my thoughts too! This stuff works great, hope it works for you too! Appreciate the comment and ol’ naknek, good times there lol 😂
Sweet vids Justin. Keep it no BS and all about the flying and the machine. Love it. I have a 76 180J with seaplane kit basically stock in the lower 48.
Hey that’s awesome, I like the late models! Thanks for the comment and appreciate it!
Just ordered some. That’s some expensive stuff but if it works it worth it.
Yeah it’s definitely worth it!
You can clean them with shine master prep before using the age master. I wouldn’t use the shine master as it hardens and cracks but they would be shiny for a minute. Jetstream PBS is another line of de-ice boot runner care products but they’re not as good as the Goodrich line.
@wadesaxton6079 really appreciate the info I’ll look at them too, have you used those products on your ABW? Thanks for the comment!
@@justinsalaskanadventures Nope, I don’t have ABW’s. I have used all the products on multiple de ice boots for years and the age master on tires for things I don’t use often enough like my motorcycle.
Good stuff man! Thanks for the info!
Is this the one that was for sale at Birchwood?
No, I’ve owned it for 6 years now and I bought it from a guy in Wasilla
@@justinsalaskanadventures Ohhhh Ok. There was one sitting there for sale near john marks hangar for a spell. Was a tad out of reach for me but very nice looking.
Wasn’t that the one that had experienced an engine failure on TO on a pponk? It’s landed on the highway. Saw that one for sale for ages
Not too sure, not this bird!
Justin, how old are those BW's just out of curiosity? I am ordering this stuff for all our tires. Thanks for the tip!
@markbanks3319 this set that I have is going on 3 years old and coming up on 150 hours of use, zero cracking, not even at the valve stem yet. Hopefully this works for you, thanks for the comment!
Thanks, never heard of that and had limited success with 303. I use covers almost always outside, thats only thing that has really helped. 6 out of 8 sets on Wagon have died from cracking before chord wore through! Have around 1000 hours on cub 31’s n if it wasnt for chord busting out the cracks I would have prolly been able to run another 500 hours easy. Time to give this product a try 🤙
@sharkdog2609 most all bird up here are running bushwheels and that’s the same problem we all have, the cracking, my last set that cracked out prior to learning about Age Master I literally gave away, kills me to let that kind of Money go. Hopefully this works for you, works great for me. Thanks for the comment!
How much did the whole conversion cost?
@alaskadrifter it’s hard to pin a price on it because there are different options you can go with, mine had high compression pistons, port and polish, 520 oil pump, nickel cylinders, out the door was 53k using my old crank and cases.
How much does the pod slow you down on cruise ? I have a 58 A model with the P Ponk 520 and Mac 3 blade prop-
@pilotc180 well to be honest I haven’t seen a decrease in speed and during the tests they “claim” it’s faster, reason why they said is that inherently there is turbulence under the belly of a 180, and the belly pod smoothes it out and by the end of the belly pod it’s smooth air. I’ll tell you since installing it, I don’t notice a difference in the plane or handling or speed, it’s a game changer for the weight and balance for hauling gear. Personally id never go back. I can haul gross with the characteristics of a empty plane with the weight distributed correctly. Thanks for the comment!
@@justinsalaskanadventures thanks for the info; I think ill buy a pod
More of the same Please!
The big 31s have made your 180 much more useful for your Alaska flying, but still there is at least one trade offs to be considered. What was your cruise speed penalty? How much added weight vs OEM wheels/tires?
I only lost 6 mph on the top end, and the weight is minimal compared to the safety factor, I can easily haul a grand in the plane
Thats great, wonder if belly pod makes a difference. Myself and band of Skywagon buddies all lose a solid 10mph from 8.50 to ABW 31’s. Thats on either 470 or 520 powered planes, had both engines on my ship with same result. Have run 2 sets of 29s and on 4th set of 31s on 59’ wagon, get around 600 hours outta reg tread and 800 with heavy tread. Thats on mostly gravel n grass, but dont shy away from pavement at all. Wish Bill n Wup were still sellin em, they were the best!
Oh yeah, no difference in speed between 29” and 31” in my experience 🤙
Got 29s now bout ready for new shoes. Considering 31s
Great channel Justin!! Seeing all these 180/185s around Anchorage on my overnights I’ve started looking for one…seeing the Pponk engine upgrade information makes me thinking its worth buying with conversions or time ex stock 470. Keep the videos coming, very informative.
Hey really appreciate the feedback, I’m currently parked at PAMR, in town for a grocery run/supplies. feel free to stop buy and check out the bird. And as far as the Pponk i definitely recommend, it’s a game changer for a light 180.
What engine and prop combination are you running now? I have a 1955 180 with a O470 with Leading Edge Exhaust and an 88 MacCauley.
I am currently running a PPonk 470-50 making over 300hp with a black Mac 401 3- blade 86”
@@justinsalaskanadventures 😲
Is that an Alaskan Bush Pod? How do you like it on the 180?
It’s the firman pod, and I 100% love it, I can bring my whole family out in the plane and put all our camping gear in the belly pod, plus for its great for hauling gear, less stuff to hit you in the back of the head if you go down or flip over
"promosm"
Just happened upon your page b/c I was looking for information about PPonk upgrades for my 58' C182 and my quest to turn it into a backcountry beast. Excellent information on performance.
Hey thank for the comment, welcome and if you decide to ponk your bird, Your straight tail with be a monster!
Nice review and good information for those considering options.
Thanks! Really appreciate it! Let me know if I can answer any questions you have!
Hey Justin! I am Just now in the Stene Aviation shop in Polson with 1955 C180 going with the same engine modification 305hp out of a LyCon overhaul! I can hardly wait!!!
Well I bet your excited! It’s worth every dime! Not only that, but it’s bound to put smiles on your face every time you push that throttle to the dash! Congrats
Nice plane dude!!
Dude these transition are badass🗿🍷
Excellent video! I have used it for a reference a few times with my Northpoint XP conversion. How did you figure out it had 306hp? Did Custom Aircraft put it on a dyno before you installed it?
Yes I opted to have all the bells a whistles, port and polished, flow matched intake, high compression pistons, and yes on the dyno at custom AC. Printed out the sheets for me. They have to run it for a hour I think? And glad you liked the video, you’ll be all smiles with you PPonk. I know I’m I love! What do the say buy once, cry once? It was very expensive and I’m on a budget but it was worth every penny!
This is so cool! Such an adventure : )
Thanks for the comment! It’s pretty fun looking for treasures :)
Nice plane bro!
hey thanks for the comment, she’s a great bird, definitely not a show plane but she’s a working girl
Oh Man! Jealous over here! Nice plane, gorgeous day and a sweet (stinky) beach find! Well done.
Next summer we’ll have to get together and visit over some coffee!
@@justinsalaskanadventures Sounds good to me!
Looks like a nice setup for your airplane was great to instruments instead of all glass
Thanks for the comment, it was my goal to stay simple yet clean, plus all that glass is heavy!
