    Great video, but I'm confused by any groups being under represented. Is there anything the gym should be doing to address that? Or what can they do to improve?

    • @blackgirlsboulder
      @blackgirlsboulder 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’ve been to a lot of gyms over the years and it’s very clear that gyms all across the country lack representation from Black climbers. Now I don’t think this is in any way intentional or that anyone is doing anything negligible but it’s really about the lack of exposure. It would be great if gyms partnered with more youth groups whose parents can’t afford the wildly expensive membership fees so kids could learn about climbing earlier. I wasn’t exposed to climbing until I was 35 and that was by accident. I wish I just knew the sport existed. I am not poor, I can afford a membership, I was just underexposed. And I think that’s the biggest problem and honestly why I created this channel. Just so someone who looks like me knows that this sport I love exists and that people who look like them do it. Again, gyms don’t have to do anything. They’re corporate entities focused on the bottom line but for those who do care about creating exposure, it’s as simple as talking to the local YMCA, Boys and Girls Club or the scouts.

    Not exactly sure why, but it feels wrong to me to make such segmentation in the title of the video and in the shirts and in the people you include in your videos (in your brand as a whole). Not saying you have to include different types of people in your video, that'd be the same type of dumbness that makes disney have forced inclusion, but the fact that the whole series is named black girls climbing makes it as if u actually cared about wether you are a girl or black or whatever. Like no one actually cares what you are (female, male, black, asian, etc). Only people that care about what you are are racist people, and the fact that you decide to make your content this way just feels as if you were the one that's trying to force gender or race into a content that actually has nothing to do with it (sports). And of course you may want to generate a black community of climbing people, but that's just you dividing a community for no reason at all, like imagine if someone came up with white people climbing. Just speculation here but if feel like yall are the first to blame many matters on racism when it has nothing to do with it.

    • @shellocakes
      @shellocakes 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      this is such a disrespectful comment, especially at the end with your "speculations". it's not exclusionary to have affinity groups for under-represented climbers (white people are not under-represented). some people actually DO care about finding other people that look like them in sports. having the name 'black girls boulder' makes spreading visibility about their advocacy for more diversity in climbing easier. saying "no one cares what you are" is equivalent to saying "i don't see race at all". just let them take up their space plzzzzzz >:(((

    • @ignacioalvarez5851
      @ignacioalvarez5851 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@shellocakes I mean... i don't see race at all, i think that's the way to a world without discrimination. And about what representation exactly are you talking about? When I think of climbers I don't think seperately of white, black or women climbers, I just think of them as climbers as a whole, so I don't think trying to attach yourself to your race is something healthy to do since now you feel under represented in something in which you are not supposed to feel represented, and if so then you should feel like you represent just climbers, not black climbers or white climbers. And even if you tried to come from the competitive side, no one is making any sort of influence to make black folks be less atracted to the sport, so what good would it make you to say you are under represented when the reason for it isn't even bad? But then again, what I want to emphasize is the fact that people should feel like they represent climbing, not some sort of segmented portion of climbers. That just adds to the discrimination or to the feeling discriminated for no reason.

      Your comments reveals a lack of understanding about the complexities of race and the experiences of people from different backgrounds. This perspective dismisses the unique challenges and systemic issues that many face. I hope that one day, you will be able to step back and acknowledge the full existence and experiences of others in this world. I believe in the value of all people, but it's disrespectful and harmful to ignore the realities of race and its impact on our lives. You summarized your ignorance with "I don't see race at all".

    There are no shortcuts to breaking in climbing shoes. I have over a dozen and the only surefire way to break them in is to climb in them. The shower "trick" does not expand rubber and will make your shoes smell. Sticking them in an oven or near a hairdryer will cause premature delamination. Just climb in them. It might suck for a session or two but it's better than setting $200 bucks on fire because you wanted instant gratification.

    How long term is your recovery process? If it is somewhat temporary it may not be too bad to embrace the crappier shoes for a little while as long as you feel it isn’t creating additional risk. I didn’t have great shoes for a while when I was starting out and I honestly think it made me a stronger climber in a few ways. Slippy feet can be frustrating but it can also force you to really focus on being intentional with your placement. When I had bad shoes I learned how to catch the swing, maintain tension, and campus through a variety of problems. Maybe you could use this as a bit of a reset period to hone a couple of techniques in your arsenal? This isn’t to say having worse fitting shoes is a good thing, just that there’s a couple of silver linings.

    • @blackgirlsboulder
      @blackgirlsboulder 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s something I’ll have to live with forever. I’ll eventually need a total ankle and talus replacement. As the doctor’s said…”it was a life-changing injury.” I wish on everything it was temporary because I love bouldering but know the clock is probably running out. But if I have to stick with the crappy shoe…so be it. Just want to be on the wall as long as I can.
