    Hi Mark. Thank you for the video. about the Kodak 8mm digitizer. It was a big help since I was a bit scared too like some other people said they were to tackle it. When I tried it after watching your video, all went well as far as the operation went but the picture is out of focus. 😯😕 Who would want to look at something like that. I was going to send it back but because I've had it over 30 days, Amazon won't let me send it back for a refund. So because of my stupidity of not checking it before then, I'm stuck with a $300 worthless piece of junk. 😢 And I'm a low income senior. I wonder why it would be like that on mine but not on other peoples. 😕

    • @MysterySue

      UPDATE/CORRECTION: I must not have had the film under ALL FOUR little (and I do mean little) pins and THAT was why it was out of focus but it's doing just fine now. But, gee, it sure is hard to see and to try to hold a light on it while getting the film under all 4 pins and keeping them there till the lid is closed. Whew! 😬

      There is a setting for even fields and odd fields. Right click on the video capture devise in the source window then click on Deinterlacing. Under that I selected Yadif 2x. You can also select top field first or bottom field first. Try one of those two to see what results you get. Good luck.

    So I was right, its not by Kodak, its got Kodak's name slapped on it. The bigger screen won't make any difference to the scans. Avoiding for another unnamed brand because all you're paying on this for is the Kodak name, the Kodak name that sadly died when they went bust.

    • @TheMediaNerdMT
      @TheMediaNerdMT 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The bigger screen doesn't have anything to do with the scan, it is so you can see the picture better.

    Well done video but I have one suggestion up to this point. At 6:26, you mention "the end of the film on the left" and on the right. Visible on the left edge of the frame are 2 small white rectangles which, I see later, are really portions the spocket holes of the film. It would be worth mentioning that here IMO. I am watching the rest of it now to prepare for the arrival of m WMMP today. I bought it from Amazon, based to a large extent on your comments and am looking forward to doing the conversions myself instead of paying someone else to do that. I intend to rig up a device to hold a PEC cleaning pad, probably cut down from a full-sized one, with some PEC cleaning solution on it to clean the film before it gets scanned. I'll share info of what I come up with and how it works with everyone later. No reason in my aged mind that this should not do a good job...but then who knows? I've been wrong in the past and extent to continue making boo-boos. Thanks for your advice.

    • @TheMediaNerdMT
      @TheMediaNerdMT 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's sounds like a good idea. I am looking forward to seeing what you do. The only issue that I occasionally when cleaning film using my antique reel to reel machine is when I come across film with broken sprocket holes. The pec pad catches onto it. However, that doesn't happen too often so I look forward to what you come up with!

  • @digjunk3d
    @digjunk3d 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

    One of the first reviewers on YT had this as his main complaint, that no matter which setting you use it will always be .vob. Personal experience with this: I recorded a program, had it on my thumb drive, wrote a DVD from it, and then I accidently erased the files. So I took the DVD, and it gave me the .vobs. I then worked with ffmpeg to quickly convert them to mp4. So now I have the files again. But for a lot of people the appeal of this device is the standalone appearance of it, but if you continue making these videos, that standalone application is going to seem more and more unrealistic. That being said, I've managed a way of using this device so that it is practical. I LOVE the ability to pause a recording.

    • @TheMediaNerdMT
      @TheMediaNerdMT 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for sharing your experience with the machine. I am sure that viewers will find it useful.

  • @ralphedelbach
    @ralphedelbach 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Is there any reason a device couldn't be designed to hold the PEC pad and cleaner in position on the scanner, right before it goes into the scanning head? That would save some time and avoid having to unwind and rewind the film any more than necessary. Doesn't seem to me that there would be problem with the liquid causing any distortion during the actual scanning process, given he slow rate of the actual scanning, likely giving adequate tme for the cleaner to evaporate. Any thoughts? How long does it actually take to scan a 50' reel or what is the scanning rate in minutes per foot? Thanks.

    • @TheMediaNerdMT
      @TheMediaNerdMT 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’d love that. I was thinking the same thing when I was making this video. A 50 ft reel takes about a half hour.

    • @TheMediaNerdMT
      @TheMediaNerdMT 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I use Final Cut Pro 7 (an old version) on a Mac. I run the Umatic player into a mini-dv deck using RCA cables. The reason for this is to break any time code because Final Cut uses time code and will stop if there are time code breaks. I then run the mini dv deck to the mac via Fire Wire. I use the old version of Final Cut because the new version does not take fire wire and can be glitchy.

      Do you have the cartridge right side up? If you have it upside down, it will not feed. Make sure that the you have the number "1" in by the arm. When I start batch recordings, I have to manually put in the first slide and then start the batch. If that does not work then you may have to return it for a new one.

    • @TheMediaNerdMT
      @TheMediaNerdMT 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The issue I find with having an adjustable white balance is that things were filmed in different locations. You may set the white balance for in door then the shot moves from indoor to outdoor. You would have to reset the white balance. I think that the auto white balance is the best way to go. You can always adjust your colors in a software editing program like Final Cut Pro.

    I've got a question regarding this issue. I've been helping older family members clean their houses and I offered to digitize all their content on the VHS tapes and put it on their iCloud where they can actually see it, and since I offered I have had so many stuck tapes, and I'm wondering if it would be ok to leave the lid of the player off while I digitize the tapes in case this happens which it likely will. Will this mess up the tapes? I know some players don't play the tapes if the lid is off but I'm willing to try it out. Also will cleaning the tape heads and the vcr (watched your other video on cleaning) prevent this from happening? I haven't used a vcr in like fifteen years and at this point it's happening like every tape I put in (it used to be 1 out of 3 tapes) I am ejecting it wrong or should I be stopping then rewinding before ejecting? Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks!

      Since you are most likely using a VCR that is very old and hasn't been run in years you definitely need to clean it including the pinch roller (black rubber part). Your tapes are most likely getting caught up because all of the parts are gummed up. Playing the VCR with the lid off won't hurt anything. You can eject the tape at what ever part you want. I do recommend that if you are playing, rewinding or fast forwarding, you hit stop first before ejecting.

    Great video, thanks. Any advice on how to get rid of audio echo? It's only on the recorded part. I've tried to adjust sync offset. When I monitor audio, it sounds fine.

      It may be that you are recording the audio coming from the speakers as well as the line in. Maybe?

      Thanks. I checked that as well. I made sure the audio monitor is off. Recorded a sample, and I'm still getting it. I think it's something to do with the bit rate, but I'm not sure how to adjust that. I followed the instructions in this video to set the aspect ratio. I hope it's not the fps. It seems it happens more when I try to record a long video. Almost 5 hrs. I'll try beaking it up into sections.@TheMediaNerdMT

    Well, then. Question:Did you see my vid before making this when talking about recording times? I got to admit, I haven't gotten around to using a thumbdrive yet, so I've been plagued by the short recording times with both DVD and SDHC cards. Kudos. That may help me with a couple things for which I actually do use the device.

      No, I didn't watch your video. I try and not watch other peoples videos so it doesn't seem like I am ripping off how other people do it.

    Does it tell you when the SD card is almost full?

      I am not sure. I didn't look into that. However, you could put the SD card into your computer and go to properties to find out.

      I can do the best I can at repairing video tapes. Sometimes they are too far gone. You may go to my main website, www.coloradospringsvideo.com and contact me to discuss your situation.

      No, they aren't cloth. They are like cotton fibers that are condensed.

    Any idea how to fix audio desync? I find that after about 20 minutes it's noticeably off and at the end of a 2 hour recording there's about a 2 second sync delay.

      Go to your audio settings on your camera and put it to 16 instead of 12

    Thanks, Mark! I tried pretty much the same technique with rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip. For the Q-tip, I used more a of a blotch technique to avoid any potential fibers tearing off. I also made two passes over the heads, as the first pass definitely helped the image come through, but there was still a lot of noise. The second pass got the image to look clear as day. I hope this helps anyone else with the same problems

      Honestly, I prefer QTips because I think they do a better job and I do the same thing as you. I just get a lot of crap from “professional” when I do use a Qtip so to keep the nasty comments down, I use the swab. Keep botching my friend!!! Thanks for watching!

    En que formato quedan los archivos? Raw o Jpeg?

    You do not know what you are talking about! I guess all us film collectors who run films through a projector are asshole-morons who don't know what we're doing. Yes, a projector needs to be checked out, fixed and maintained before you use it to run film. Where do you come off, buddy, telling us not to use projectors?????
