I'm pretty sure the trumpet soloist at 3:28 is Billy Butterfield and not Jimmy Maxwell. Sure sounds like Billy to me.

Delicious, reminiscent of the sessions at Squirrel Ashcraft's house. A fellow Hackett collector, someone we both know, has a 78 album of this material or some of it; perhaps a decade ago or more it turned up on CD. Thanks, DT!

Oh, how wonderful to hear Bobby in the Heidt period without constraints! He must have felt like a kid skipping school. I think we may imagine, from both this performance and the '38 Commodore Freeman date that "What's the Use" was a Hackett favourite. It's sure one of mine, and it's thrill to hear this freewheeling treatment. Borshard's vibes reflect the Rollini influence to these ears, too. Many thanks, as always!

Thanks for posting this gem and no apologies needed re the sound quality after 55 years!. A great example of the swinging music the Jazz in the Troc/WGJB musicians produced in the Clancy Hayes years (1964-69). Clancy always played banjo (rather than guitar) with the band. Can you let me know whether there are any other Clancy vocals on the tape?, I am updating his vocal discography for inclusion in his biography that will be published later this year. Too bad George Wein, a great promoter of jazz of all kinds, chose also to play piano in this band. I guess he saved money but he really doesn't belong in this company.

Wow....I never thought I would hear this....thank You! Yes, the All Stars had just returned to New York after a six month monster tour of Europe but returned to Italy for this engagement after only one week of downtime. Louis suffered a major heart attack one day before this performance at Gian Carlo Menotti's "Festival Of Two Worlds" filmed by Ed Sullivan for his show. Louis returned home on July 3rd and was back on the road two weeks later.

Gene had of course updated his sound from the original Chicagoans days, but still some Krupaisms remained -- there's no mistaking him. That can be said for all of these jazz voices, though, right? My theory is that today's jazz musicians, irrespective of instrument, have absorbed the sound of so many players, that they don't have the distinctive sound of a, say, Teagarden or Freeman or Russell or Sullivan. It's great to hear Jack doing his old water glass trick on "Blues for Today." Thank you for this!

As always, your channel distinguishes itself as one that offers the rare treats! Vic, from my trombone Top Three (along with TD and Big Tea), is an artist I can never hear enough of, and this track is new to me -- a real delight. The rhythm section sure makes a difference from the original Lester side -- which is of course no surprise.

Bunny Berrigan's incandescent performance of I Can't Get Started almost a century ago will inspire brilliant musicians like these as long as there is jazz. Ranks with Stardust, in my book, at the very top pop performances of all time.

We were sitting around listening to this last night and thinking, how great would it have been to be able to just drive down the hill to Hollywood, walk into Billy Berg's Vine Street Club, and watch these guys play live?
