VMware vSphere 7 Nested Homelab Networking Video Tutorial
Hmmm. I wonder how well the DFW performs when it has a large number of rule to process for each packet going through? Then multiply this by a large number of VM's. I doubt it will perform like a dedicated firewall, such as a Palo Alto. Much of PA f/w processing is done in hardware so packets suffer virtually no latency. So NSX-T can provide the functionality, but does it measure up to the performance.
As a network consultant those PING response times @14.24 are terrible. Considering that this only has to traverse a single cable (the overlay) why is there such a great variability of the times - anywhere between 0.9ms and 35ms. What is causing this delay? It certainly cant be the cable. Either he has configured it badly or this technology is very poor performance.
Thanks for the info. I had my VYOS VIF interfaces not configured correctly and it was dropping my jumbo frames Geneve between the TN's and the Edge Node.
The video is great. The only thing I ran into is when using William Lam OVA's and importing them in you can't use the initial GUI interface for any settings they don't take. But I am using ESXI 7.0.3 it might be different on other versions. You have to start up the ESXI VM and go through the DCUI F2 interface for network settings to work and be sure to disable the ip6v!! Otherwise the ip4v won't take on a reboot. Also you have to know the default password for the OVA's images which someone mentioned is VMware1! to get in the first time.
how to download the ISO if you are not a partner? Can you get a trial license? I can't find any options for that on the broadcom website
Thank you very much, it worked without any problems.
Hi @jef , hope you are well. i have vyos on my vmware workstation , and my laptop connects to a physical switch. when i create a subinterface (vif 10) on vyos , im not able to ping the SVI on the physical switch , can you please help me resolve this issue? thank you
Thanks Jeffrey, perfect I setup the vyos router in my home lab, have three esx hosts but I have nested three esx hosts i created they can now see the network traffic on a different subnet, all i have to do is created another vcenter and a DC to look after the nested servers, before i have a go at NSX install hope that is right Top Video !!!
GREAT! 👍
I followed your tutorial to the tee, and i am not able to ping vyos router.
Hello Jeffrey, For Home Lab practices , can I install this on VMware workstation Pro over my laptop , which have 1 Corei7 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1185G7 @ 3.00GHz 3.00 GHz , 32GB Memory , I have 2 Physicals 1GB Network Uplinks , 1x physical router supporting return routes, 1x Virtual router , 2 SSD Disks 1 of them 500GB SSD ? OR that need 1 Physical Server ? also can you please share the minimum requirements (Compute, Storage, Networking... ) for this NSX Configuration.. Thank you
3 videos in and cannot complete the lab due to missing parts.....you waste my time.
thanks! (1) what program do you use to 'autofill' your commands? (2) what colour scheme are you using for your fonts? Thank you!
Thank you for this very useful setup guide. You have put much effort in your videos and I've downloaded them all for reference, since I will be building out embedded vSAN in my homelab soon, along with some other things like Tanzu. Hartelijk bedankt!
c'mon man...why not explain the restore part which is the one indeed useful...a simple backup is easy to make but the restore part...nowhere to find it explained
great series but sucks to have not done my research before starting. wasted my time came from the blog site
I have one Physical machine. I want to install nakivo on that physical machine and backup data to cloud storage. Is it possible?
Yes, is possible.
great series so far, will there be a video on deploying and configuring nsx-t?
Salam sir, thank you so much for knowledges. Here i want to ask, what is the nsx network setting in vm. Is it esxi-mgmt(vlan 10) and nested-esxi(vlan 4095) or there are the others? Thank you!
This is for the nic allocated to vm nsx sir, what vlan attached to that, thank you
will you also be updating your NSX-T lab series as well?
Was just about complete with this set up until 13:45 and you've got 3 other port groups that just magically appeared.. Please update the video to show the creation of these port groups with an explanation.
What is the benefit in running 3 nested ESXi rather thank the one physical ESXi. Curious because that’s my current setup just the one ESXi.
This is for homelab VMware studying purposes, not for prodution, performance is much lower, of course. It enables you to make a cluster with one server.
It seems to me you are going to need NAT to get this working properly without out nothing on the nested side can get out.
The best who explained NSX-T easily
creating DPGs and assign to hosts portion are missing; video only shown manage. why?
hi, i am new. got a basic question. how do you RDP to jump server from outside? do you need to install specific software on the jump server or need to configure you home router to open some ports?
Hi Jeffery i hope You 're doing well, i have a question please i'm building my home lab and i'm not a network gut, i did not get the idea behind the trunking and why we use the port 4095 on our port groupe. Best regards.
Please make vidio on how to restore this backup sir
There are parts of the video where you skip important things or mention them. For example, port groups after creating a VDS. This is not the first time in the entire video series.
So helpful thank you... Not sure if you could shed some light on why the VMWare ISO isn't compatible with something like Balena Etcher I'd really appreciate it
Thank you Jeff We would like to have video explaining the network part of initial NSX ALB configurations.
@@JeffreyKusters Duidelijk. Thanks voor het antwoord.
This is a great series. When is the next video coming?
Will this series work fine with installing everything on VMware Workstation? Thx! Is is possible to do intervlan routing with vmware workstation? Thx!
so far so good for me on VMware Workstation, ive deployed one esxi host in VMware Workstation to act as a physical host.
Hi Jeffrey, great videos here, nice work. I have a question about how the licence would work in a nested setup. For the benefit of home labber's, it might be useful to gain this understanding so anyone wanting to try this nested approach with either a 'free' ESXi vSphere setup. I am working through your videos as I want to learn more about the NSX and the whole nested setup, so I find this hugely interesting. Keep up the good work, its much appreciated. Oh and no, I wouldnt personally use nested in anything other than a Lab / home lab setup for learning. Cheers.
Can you please provide a link to the NSX Security edition? I am unable to locate it on the VMWare NSX Editions page.
yes
Hi Jeffrey, thanks for all those wonderfull video lectures. I'm also trying building a homelab with esxi. I just follwing your steps on nested esxi install. sofar so good , but when I install williams ova I cannot loging with the password I created. I gives me Invalid login or password.Did I forgot something?
In that OVA none of the parameters are modifiable during installation. To log in use the default password VMware1! After login you can set the values.
These videos are really useful - thank you. Are you planning on including the NSX-T deployment within your home lab series?
very good
Is NUC pro machine good enough to run this nested homelab? Mine small machine is NUC11TNi5 64GB memory 1TB SSD Dual 2.5Gb Ethernet. I think this is a proper entry machine for EXSI.
I would say this setup is OK for just vSphere. You might run in some memory challenges if you want to add NSX.
Great Video! I read your old blog post about the nested EXSI homelab, it's a awesome setup for learning, there is a video version of the configuration! I am new to VMware, I found it's hard to find an integrated tutorial/information for a full function and secure homelab. Look forwards to see the full section of videos!
Thanks! In the next video we’ll be adding a vyos appliance for routing. Stay tuned!

Hi everyone. In some of my previous videos on my home lab build, there were some inconsistencies, areas I did not cover fully, or they had such lousy audio quality your ears probably started bleeding. With this new video series (made with proper gear), I will provide a comprehensive, step-by-step tutorial on building and configuring a nested VMware vSphere 7 and VMware NSX 4 homelab. I will upload a new video in this series every week if my work and personal schedule allow it. The last part of the video contains the first 'lecture' where I explain and demonstrate how to create a USB installation drive for VMware ESXi on macOS without using 3rd party tooling. I will probably also upload that portion of the video as a separate video so everyone can easily reference it. Have fun!
Thanks for sharing, however there is not enough detail about the network, you are showing us what you have already done, rather than going through step by step, yes I can see what you have done but how did you do it?
Thanks. I might do a rebuild of my homelab in the near future and will definitely use that opportunity to record a new set of videos on how I’m doing this step by step. Stay tuned!
Netjes gap
This was wonderful. This is exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks for sharing . Could you please show the advanced features of this load balancer like irule etc
Nicely explained..👏🏻👏🏻
Hi, we are looking to design mgmt cluster and compute cluster . Mgmt cluster will have 4 hosts and host nsx-t manager and edges. Compute cluster will be running nsx-t and esxi hosts having nsx-t agents installed. The question I have is do we need mgmt cluster to be running nsx-t or rather vsphere DVS only , without nsx-t networking ? Not sure what is the best practice . It would save cost on nsx-t licensing as well if we don't have to be running it on mgmt cluster
From the NSX-T documentation: NSX Edge VM can be installed on an NSX-T Data Center prepared host and configured as a transport node (docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-NSX-T-Data-Center/3.2/installation/GUID-370D06E1-1BB6-4144-A654-7AF2542C3136.html). Maybe creating a shared edge/compute cluster is an option?
