"Catch 5" Late 1970s Demo Tape - Frank Gari/Station Concepts
This was a tape that was sent to me to digitize. Unfortunately, the quality is poor. It took some work to record it, as the tape kept tearing. This is the issue with old tapes....they do not last forever.
This demo was sent out when Frank Gari Productions was named "Station Concepts"

Frank Gari Productions - 1989 'Diversified' News Theme Demo Reel
มุมมอง 1.2K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
Another reel full of great Gari material from the late 1980s. Attached was a note from Jack King, who was Gari's sales guy suggesting KWQC consider Hello. Two years later, we switched to Hello and the legacy began.
TM Productions 1980s TV Music Demo
มุมมอง 92621 วันที่ผ่านมา
TM is best known for their radio jingles, they dabbled in TV news image campaigns and news music in the 80s. We discovered a planning binder full of notes and ideas for TV6's 40th anniversary (1988-89) and found that we came very close to purchasing The Spirit of Texas, but ultimately ended up using The News Image Plus from Tuesday and commissioning a jingle from Stephen Arnold Music.
ABC Fall 1985 Jingle - "You'll Love It"

Enjoy a freshly digitized version of the ABC 1985 campaign jingle "You'll Love It" along with a few other cuts off this reel. Thanks to Bill for sending this to me to digitize. It is nice to see that other stations have held onto some of these gems from years past. If you have any broadcast-related material you would like digitized, I am always happy to do it. cyle.dickens@kwqc.com

This is my first time hearing this particular jingle in the ID after the topical. I even asked one of our veterans in promotions, who has been here since '85 and he doesn't recall this one. I have a sneaky suspicion it's a Tuesday Productions jingle.

Jim fisher’s daughter here- this recording is amazing! Would you have any more recordings of my dad?
Yes!! Please email me at cyle.dickens@kwqc.com
Thanks, Cyle! I was looking for this piece at 2:04 because of the theme for Panorama and Avance Panorama from Universidad de Chile Televisión (Chilevisión) i was looking for all these years. 😁😁😁
One thing i didn't know was that Network Music was part of Tuesday Productions, which I've never heard of until now. I think Network might composed this beautiful piece! How excited of me! 😁😁😁
Very interesting to hear the demo cuts of all of these themes, especially Making A Difference, in which I hear what eventually became "News Station", one of my favorite news music packages. Any chance you have any News Station materials?
WOW a last! Now and if only the promo's could get the same love!
Wouldn't happen to have the demo for Otis Conner's "The Best Things In Life" floating about, wouldja?
That's from the late 1970s

This is beautiful.
OMG This is golden! Do you have the full digitized reel? Thank you for sharing these!
OMG these are amazing! Thank you for sharing these! Do you have the reels ripped in lossless quality (since TH-cam compresses to 128kbps mp3)? I'd love to obtain a copy for my own listening pleasure. Thanks!
Yes I do!
40 years ago today. And it have an amazing quality after being stored for years.
Classic WEWS from Cleveland…used for years.
This is a terrific modern take on the iconic "Hello" image song! It's pretty catchy!
This is an astonishing example of why vintage media should never be discarded. You're one of the truest people to ever rise to such an occasion.
This demo reel has had me in full nostalgia mode! Thank you, Cyle, for sharing it. I've always been sorta partial to Frank Gari Productions' "Turn to News," "Great News," and "Good News" packages. :)
This TV news theme montage was really breathtaking to listen to. TM really knew what they were doing back then.
I absolutely LOVE that you preserved this gem from ABC's past. It'll be 40 years old later on this year. :)
I am old enough to remember when WHBF had "Catch 5" as their theme song, though I don't know if they ever used the image song. They did have "Catch 4" as their slogan tho.
I’d love for someone to unearth the old promo from WHBF.
This is the only place I've heard the clean version of the WEWS TV5 News open and close.
Thanks as always for preserving this stuff, which would be otherwise lost to time!
Wmc-Tv Channel 5 Memphis Used The Catch 5 Music Package For Their Newscast From (1977-1980) This Same Music Package Was Used As (Live) News Coverage Of The Sudden Death To The King Of Rock N' Roll, Elvis Presley On (August 16th, 1977) With The Late Dick Hawley,Roger Cooper,Dave Brown/"Big" Jack Eaton.
7:23 sounds like the "SKY News theme" from early years of the channel. This is the song, but i cant remember the name: th-cam.com/video/hnFtCoT_htk/w-d-xo.html And in 1993, when the channel made some changes in their news package, they asked for Frank about a news tune exclusive for they. And he made this: th-cam.com/video/NzV7X2e3WU4/w-d-xo.html
That's the great news package.

WMC-TV in Memphis used “Catch 5” for a while in the ‘70s.
KITV Honolulu,On Channel 4,You’ll Love It. WPVI Philadelphia,On Channel 6, You’ll Love It. In 1985.
WSB Atlanta ,On Channel 2,You’ll Love It in 1985.
Catch 5 used by WBZ Boston in 1983,WDAF Kansas City,MO in 1974,KTVX in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1970’s,WGR Buffalo,NY in 1979,WVIT Hartford,CT in 1983 and WSB Atlanta in Early 1980’s.
Also WXLT in Sarasota, and WIXT in Syracuse.
And WMC-TV in Memphis! I remember as a kid when our family had to stay overnight in Memphis while traveling from Houston and saw their newscast with this theme song (and of course the steamboat whistle).
WHBF used Catch 5 for awhile
Gems from Cleveland and the material that launched Gari’s career. Production wise, on that first track, you could already start to hear some familiar aspects to later packages that would become a hallmark of his sound.
What cut/package is heard at 5:37? It's so catchy!!
That is ‘Turn To’. I recently interviewed Frank Gari for our upcoming documentary, and he talked about that music package and campaign at length. It was originally developed for WXYZ in Detroit.
It is so wonderful to hear some classic Gari music on either a demo reel or in full. Maybe one these days, "It's All Right Here" will surface
KITV-Honolulu,We’re 4 Hawaii,it’s on KITV 4 Come out the Celebrate,We’re 4 Hawaii on 4,We’re 4 Hawaii on 4.The song was used The Spirit of Texas in 1986.
“Keeping You In Touch” was used on 790 WTAR (AM) Norfolk in the 1980s! I knew that sounded familiar!
I used the last one as a ring tone
The cut at 0:41 ( audio only ) was a pre-commercial bumper at WBZ Boston; the cut at 1:12 ( again, audio only, and played one note lower...perhaps on a slow tape???) was the open for a while at WFSB Hartford.
The Gari material is always a treat, Cyle. Thanks as always.
this is so good, this is a model of what station branding and ID can do when thought is put into it, well done!
Turn to News is one of my favorites.
Cyle- thanks for posting these, such a great listen to hear the range that Gari Productions always brought to market
Do you have any more Frank Gari stuff? I’m particularly interested in the mellow “Turn to News” cuts used by KFSN and WGHP for their signoffs during the 1980s.
Great to hear all these cuts in such high quality. Nothing from “Good News” though. :(
Good News appeared in some other tapes and reels. This reel was a 10 minute reel exactly and couldn’t have possibly fit anything else on it lol. You can hear the wind up when I turn the R2R player on, and I can tell you the second the last cut fades out the reel ran out. So guessing they crammed what they could into 10 minutes
Jack King was a great guy and consummate sales professional. Always had demo tapes in the mail minutes after the phone request.
WNIR FM in Kent, OH still uses this Spirit theme. The Spirit of Akron.
"I Love LA!" the parody! I cannot wait until 2028 when LA gets the Olympics!
WTVF in Nashville used the news package in the 80s with the vocal "We Share the Spirit on 5." This was when CBS was doing their Share the Spirit of CBS national campaign.
Andy, shoot me an email, cyle.dickens@kwqc.com
Jingle sung by Larry Santos. I imagine the direction went something like, "Try your best to sound sort of like Randy Newman, but not so closely that we get sued."
One of Detroit's best
Cyle, this is such amazing stuff. I love the WOI and KDRV themes that were included in the TV demo. I cannot wait to see what you have up your sleeve next, because I am sure that you are going to upload something great.
0:00 - The Spirit Of Texas (WFAA) 1:16 - Keeping You In Touch (WOI-TV) 2:19 - Get To Know Us (WBAL - I think they were the originally commissioned clients to this package based on the package’s demo montage?) 3:18 - We’re Watching Out For You (KDRV - custom resing based out of the original Spirit Of Ohio package that was for WTVN/WSYX) 4:50 - Catch The Magic (TV 18)
1:16/1:48 - Keeping You in Touch (WOI-TV) WOI in Des Moines was known as 5TV during this era and they used that theme.
As for tv 18, I think that was reserved for WLFI in Lafayette, IN. Or WVTV in Milwaukee, WI.
Keeping You In Touch was originally commissioned by KPRC-AM in Houston. I always thought that it was interesting that there was a component available for television that the TV side never used. They opted for a custom package from Toby Arnold & Associates that was ultimately syndicated to more than a few stations around the same time. I will have to upload the demo of that package sometime. I also have a demo of the Spirit of Texas package alone. It's about 20 minutes or so, IIRC. Definitely worth a listen/upload.
@@stevensuarez4843likely Milwaukee (WVTV), Quad Cities (KLJB), or Charlotte (WCCB). I don’t be that WLFI ever used that if my memory serves me right,
