    Purchased a pre owned car last year. Started the deal on Saturday. Put down about half and intended to finance the rest along with about $8,000 in warranties. Since the banks were closed and I had to go out of state for a couple of days, I told the finance manager we would finish the deal when I returned. During my trip, the emotion of the purchase had faded and I started to think about the warranties. The big warranty was 36 months 36000 miles at $5000.00. I calculated I would drive about 7000 to 9000 miles a year and would never reach the 36000 miles in 36 months and I would still be paying for a warranty that I could no longer use. Therefore, I figured if I spent $8000 on repairs over the next 36 months ( and I'm certain that I wouldn't - I know, rolling the dice ) I'd break even and have no finance charges on top of the cost of the warranties. Returned to the dealer a few days later and told the finance manager that I didn't want any of the warranties and I would pay the balance of the purchase price with cash and explained my reasoning. I will always cherish the look on his face. Everyone forgets about emotion when making a large purchase. If possible, back away for a couple of days, analyze cost, finance charges, add ons, etc.

    Hi Kimberly! I’ve been a member of PenFed CU for 3 months, and I’m also a member of my employer’s CU FedEx Employees Credit Association since 2006. All of my FICO scores are over 800. Should I apply for both credit unions at the same time, or should I choose just one CU to apply for a used car loan? Thank you for your Great TH-cam videos, as well.

      Hi @c50grand2 ! Perfect that you 'know your credit first' ✅ Next, check out each C/U's interest rates & terms for Used on their websites, look for any rate discounts they offer for ex: .25 rate decrease if you sign up for automatic payment withdraw and speak with an auto loan officer from each one, should you have any questions. If rates are about the same, find out who will provide the smoother transaction for you with the dealership. Will they provide you with a blank check to take to the dealer? CHOOSE ONE C/U . Find & negotiate the vehicle you want. Tell the dealership F/I Mgr. your score is 800 and they can have the opportunity to beat your C/U rate by a point but only send it to 2, no more than 3 banks. That will take 5 minutes once they have the numbers. Many times, dealership F/I can beat the C/U which is nice as it saves you time and money. Also, if you're looking at Certified Pre-Owned vehicles (CPS's), ask Finance Manager for Special Incentive Rates for it. Hope that helps!

    This is one of the biggest reason people hate dealerships and in house finance! They shop your credit around that benefits the finance guy and your credit 30 days later is shot to shit with 7-9 hard hits! The games they play with the numbers, just what’s the actual price! New laws need to be rewritten so consumers can buy direct from manufacturers and cut out dealers! Always get pre approved from your credit union first! Will most likely try to beat their interest rate but rarely do they ever and if you can get a 0% from dealer get it and immediately payoff before the 30 days so FI guy can’t make his money!

    When I negotiate a car I generally don't mention I'm paying cash until the end. I've even let them on thinking I'm going to do 5-year loan. Then I change my mind 😆. I always work on out the door price.

      Thank you! @kellylofton8748 There are just too many risks. For example, risk of chargebacks. Credit card transactions can be disputed by the buyer, leading to chargebacks. If a buyer claims there are issues with the vehicle, the dealer might face financial losses. It also depends on the contract the dealer signed with the Merchant. There could be a fee structure that would not be beneficial. Fees have also gone through the roof. Also, dealers would much rather allow you to put a larger amount as down payment on your card and finance the rest via the finance office.$$ Now, keep in mind, it's up to the dealer. They're all different in what they choose to allow. We have allowed people to do it in the past for regular clients. But rarely. All this to say.... If that's is something you want to do, certainly ask the Sales Manager first ✅

    If buying GA coverage, then do zero down payment if possible. This way you get the max benefit of the GAP coverage. If buying a car and will keep for a long time, get an extended warranty with no deductibles, and make sure the warranty is from the manufacturer, like a Toyota Warranty, instead of third party warranty. Paying cash makes sense when ca loan interest is high.

      Hi @Starvergent Typically, if you have the credit to obtain the 0% Incentive, it's an "Instant" clean approval. However, there can always be exceptions such as, occasionally there could be "Stipulations". For example: If you recently moved, they may require POR = Proof of Residency which would be a utility bill with your name and date on it. Another example could be due to the deal Structure. For example: If you owe much more on your trade than the allowance. As part of the structure, that could throw the Loan-to-Value out of balance and the lender simply won't lend, or "Advance" that much. The Stipulation then would be money down.       @@AutoFinanceSense OK so no proof of income or anything is required? Just ID with my address on it for credit check. Video doesn't mention anything about bringing ID. The guy at my bank made me install Experian app on my phone yesterday. It showed 619 for my credit. But no other report information. Just the number. And he got me a credit card at my bank with $1500 limit. I currently have no debt and purchasing a vehicle ($15,000) with no trade in.

    I'm seeing many dealers now advertising "no additional fees" but I'm sure they're jacking up the price of the vehicle more than enough to compensate for the loss of the doc fee. Max doc fee I've seen in my area is $699, over $1k is just insane.

    The Doc Fees are BS Fees and just refuse to pay it. Have them subtract the Doc Fee from the price or walk away. You will find another car dealership who will subtract it. The car salesman and sales manager want to sell the car more than you need the car.

    I bought a VSC at a Mazda dealership nine years ago. They told me “it covers literally anything that goes wrong including Pet damage in the car“ well after a few years I took my car in and I was told no that’s not the contract you bought. What a total scam. How in the heck would you know if you actuallygot something that covers or didn’t or if it’s a scam when you’re paying thousands of dollars to a dealership?

    Yeah dealerships are BS. I haven't dealt with a dealer since 2008 and the only reason why is because I had to buy a new car because of the powertrain warranty and they still played games with me and raised the negotiated price once my credit score came back.

      Hi @Jakethesnake-dm4es Govt. fees are often lumped into one line and can be confusing. For ex: "$350, $400 or $600" with only the description of "govt. fees". And typically they are simply a default estimate by the dealer. Your taxes however, should be broken out on a separate line. Govt. fees will be an estimate for tags (plates), title, registration, transfer, tire tax if applicable and any other required state fee. These fees get firmed up on your Purchase Order by the Finance Manager before you sign. You can look up your state fees ahead of time on your local DMV website if you'd like or, ask the dealer to break them out for you. I hope this helps and thanks for being here!

    I hate when you go to a dealership and they have all of the garbage added to the price. The nitrogen filled tires, the paint protectant, the fabric protectant, whatever else they tack on that drives the price up $1-$2k. Then when you tell them you don't want those things they tell you they do those things to every car and the stuff is already on there and that they can't take those things off. When you see that stuff on the window of the vehicle, be prepared for a fight or just go to another dealer. It's really great when the salesman comes out to the lot while you're looking and you tell him, nope, not paying for that stuff and then start walking away.

    When you look at the msrp do you include factory installed packages and accessories, port installed packages and accessories as well as delivery i.e.? I see base msrp of $32,225 on my paperwork for a 2025 Camry SE then a higher price with the above items mentioned totaling $36,603. Thank you!!

      Yes. You want to see the Monroney label. The msrp will include whatever is on the Monroney label a/k/a window sticker.     Most Dealers make More on Financing kick back than the Sale of the vehicle . Ask if there's any penalties for Early Payoff . Most Don't . Finance , get better Deal & payoff Immediately . Dealers Hate it .

    I guess im unusual in the way I purchase vehicle's. I like to buy new, unbuilt with particular wants. I'll work out the ball park price/ OTD cost to me. I'll then contact 3 dealerships with my wants, i will inform all three what I'm doing. The calls come in with offers, i just tell whoever what the lowest price is, can you beat that and, so on. This takes generally 4-5 working days until all the details/OTD price is sealed. No visits, no manager games, no add ons, this works!

    I have absolutely positively zero interest in new cars. I’m going to nurse my Volvo and my Subaru to 300k miles. After that, I’ll ride a bike before I’ll purchase any of these soulless hunks of junk available on market today. I’ll move to Cuba and rehabilitate a 1940’s Cadillac with duct tapes and paper clips first. I flat out refuse to participate in this epidemic of wasteful, planned obsolescence.

      Hi @RogerSmith83 Thank you! You would not see a Subaru Added Security put on to a Ford or a GMC Protection (a/k/a GMPP) put on to a Subaru, for example.     I had a salesman tell me that credit doesn’t matter I laughed in his face . He proceeded to tell me not in this case mind you I have a credit score of 720 . So I told him if credit don’t matter everyone would be driving a new car with no problem. He got angry and started shouting and we had a minor shouting match . Long story short he was pissed and the payment went down by almost 400 dollars and at the end he told me after checking my credit I was approved for a 1.9 APR .

      That's insane. No one should have to pay that much for GAP especially if they are in a position of really needing it! I hope you tried to negotiate that price like I teach my students to do. If you do need it, set aside money to pay the negative equity from today to halfway through the loan just in case or see if your insurance carrier has it.

      @@AutoFinanceSense I Did not need it I have money set aside so when I make my first payment I will be at 50% equity My plan is took out a 60mo loan at my credit union but will have it paid off in 2.5 years.
