Safer Portable Campstove Concept - Third Year Industrial Design Major Project
มุมมอง 4.6K12 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a quick overview of my 3rd year major studio project at the School of Industrial Design at Carleton University. Time span is about 3 months. The goal was to redesign the portable camping stove and create a stove that addressed an issue we identified in our research, which for my project was the safety of transporting the propane cylinder.
Pink Foam Modelling Time Lapse
มุมมอง 15K14 ปีที่แล้ว
Time lapse photography made into video of my first year industrial design project. We had to create oil and vinegar bottles that had an organic shape and somehow interacted. A photo was taken every twenty seconds or so during the modeling and ideation process.
Plastic is gonna release xenoestrogens into the water, which will mess with your hormones. It'd be a good idea to replace the plastic top with a glass one.
Fresnel lenses? I really wouldn't know. I played with one from an old TV years ago but had mediocre results compared to the hype.
Great design! :D
Is there any way to purchase? this is amazing!
It looks interesting but I can't make out exactly what you are doing

Solar Still Design Process
plastic will leach... so the whole thing could be porcelain ,ceramic or glass....Thats what mission im on....I talking with a glass blower. all though fragile it wont leach.
YEAH ! ! ! Everyone has a wood lathe and vacuum forming machine and that's as far as I got . GOOD GRIEF ! !
Hi
Shut up here's my money
Is it safe to drink distilled water? Due to the lack of minerals it has, I have always learned that it is not safe. The difference in the concentration of minerals on one side compared to the other... Any explanation ?
its all ive drank for the past 3 months. im still here. not gonna sing praises. but the fear of it us unwarranted. makes ya think...why do they recommend not drinking it?
@@hatshirts No expert, but other sources say that it is fine to drink. It apparently tastes different (the taste people like in most bottled water is from the bit of calcium and magnesium), but there are actually packets with a little bit of salt, calcium and magnesium you can add to distilled water to make it have the mineral-water taste.
Cool idea. Do you have any for sale? Black Absorbs heat more especially black metal. Maybe use a parabolic mirror underneath to increase evaporation.
How did you solve the issue of the distilled water evaporating again?
So your concerned that some of the water will be double triple or more times disstilled? Or the loss of minor efficiency in a totally passive device?
nothing like an good old truck in her work clothes
Right? Especially an all original California model! And the sounds too
Where can we buy this?
The cone shape works well. Black plate to maximize the heat / light absorption. Make a short tunnel facing downward to harvest the water by bottle.
thank you!
so after 8 hours of sun it will provide like 10 small sips of water? ur gonna need like 4 of these in order not to die of thirst if u ever get stranded in the ocean.
True, but you can kind of do the same thing with 2-liter, and other, plastic bottles (and hot glue) one guy here on YT made one and got about 40 ml from 1 per day from it, so you would need like 100 per person (one galleon per day). So…yeah, not exactly easy or plentiful, but might help in some unusual situations. There are also bigger, but still home use, units that uses solar to heat and blow the air into cooler area, that make a galleon a day.
Checkout StarFireSolar's setups, two gallons per day. Came back here to mention this to inspire those that watched this and got demotivated by this experiment's output. Took me a few hours to find this guy, that was linked to by another guy who's setup was half as efficient. Funny how the best water distiller setup videos has the least views, while the worst have the most.
the ai/algorithms/controllers don't want peoples survival.
Hello I’m working on a parametric feasibility study on passive solar still please can you help me with some textbooks to reference
Hi, I am looking for a design to make solar stills for families in Thar, Pakistan. The women walk miles upon miles to get water but it's dirty and saline. Is there any design that you know of that is open source? Thank you.
can you make it out of glass and stainless steal?
Hear No, See No Speak No Evil Yes, I made several from glass and stainless, I bought Turkey deep fryer pots, got some dome shaped glass lids, some stainless splash guard inserts for the pots, drilled hole in the side of pots and splash guards, inserted glass tubing and sealed them with food grade silicone sealant, ran the tubing out the side into glass wine fermenting carboys. I also painted the outside of the pots with flat black high temperature stove pipe paint to speed up the distillation process. The people that use plastic are messing with their health!... BPA.. no thanks!
@@JohnWayne-86ed Some shaped glass lids. No idea where I could get one of those.
Also what about during cold winter months, how can this make water for drinking
Karen Linnenkamp It can't unless you have it in a heated sunroom/greenhouse, even then the production is slow. I designed mine to be used on a stovetop as well.
Cool video. Can you also please tell me the title of the first music and artist.
i have never had city water at home. living in a rural community county water wasn't installed. we relied upon a deep well and still do. even though county water was installed in town, we never got connected. it was about 30 years ago, my mother developed bone spurs due to the hardness of the well water. and learned about distilled water, became a sales rep for a company that manufactures and sells distillers. we have drank only distilled water since. we later had to add a softener before the steam distiller because of the wear and tear the hard water has on the distiller. since I married and moved out (to the house net door) we have plumbed up to the same deep well and share lt with my parents, and have our own softener-distiller set up (no fluoride rat poison). i have drank this water for 30 years! as a note...this company my mother sold for said NOT to distill municipal water sources due to the contaminants in the water leaving a damaging layer inside the boiling tank. they also later provided a carbon filter for "other non-H20 distillates that get passed through the process.(fluoride?)
As flouride is a dissolved ion, I don't believe that stuff filters out.
Instead of loud dumb music, how about a slower video with some narration??? Too hard maybe?
If you would like more information you can check my project page here www.behance.net/gallery/28269235/Greywater-Purification-Solar-Still, this was just a quick overview video.
why be rude if you value the information
i drink my urine for emergency
BOSS MAN Have you tried a urine enema?... they're awesome!, very cleansing, and you can recycle the urine afterwards and drink it!... just run it through a coffe filter or an old sock!
the best way to distill water off the grid is do it like the bootleggers make moonshine, with either a copper or stainless steel distiller,
Ken C You’re right and as a added bonus you can also make moonshine which is has all kinds of benefits
They boils water we need something different
The water is contaminated by the plastic. As plastic heats up it releases poisons, which is now making the water contaminated. This is only good for survival if you are dying of thirst, and only to keep you alive long enough to be rescued.
Blizzardnz c
Oh Bullshit.
Agreed, where do you find drinking water for sale in glass. Yes it (plastics) can release toxins but they will not kill you (it's not great for you and if you are building one it should be for survival. However, they do need to be food grade. Do a search for water cones and you will find they are made out of plastic. Also why not try something new, talk on your video instead of the dam music.
no will not kill you but if you are a guy the plastic mimic female hormones given off will grow you tits! But if you don t mind that then wooohoo! its ok!
Blizzardnz Just make one out of glass and stainless steel, it did cost me $375 to build 3 of them but it's worth it! Keep in mind that if you drink too much distilled water it'll leach minerals and vitamins from your body, I add mineral tablets after distillation, also boil water before distillation, or throw out the first pint or two (depends on the size of the batch) especially when using tap water, to get rid of volatile contaminants that have a lower vaporization point than water.
You are doing a Dis service to viewers by NOT Warning about using Non Food Grade Plastic or Anything else to obtain Drinking Water.
he's telling you how to make an emergency water system if you want to go into making it food grade plastic do so and shut the f*** up n either watch it or get out f****** idiot .
Who the f&^k made you the moderator @$$ hole?
Reread my last comment to ya. You don't seem to comprende so good.
My attitude is when I see someone "trying to help" , BUT Leaving off Important information that Can and Will get someone Hurt and or DEAD, I WILL COMMENT. SO, YOU SHUT THE F*&k UP AND FIND SOMEONE ELSE TO TROLL.
+archersfriend you started the troll on this good video. you want to throw in helpful information then recommend finding a better way to do it.. you don't have to beat or belittle somebody up to get your point across . that just shows pathetic insecurities. to make yourself feel good by conducting yourself " shitty" its pathetic "simply bullshit" it's a form of cyberbullying. 😲 its b******* anyway you slice.
Well done.. simple, easy, effective. Definitely a useful product
Thank you!
How is the heat generated by the burners managed? And what are the effects of wind on the burners? These are usually properties that are overlooked in the design stages that come back to bite you in the engineering and product compliance.
Got any answer to that?
To be honest I hadn't considered these things as it was a hypothetical school project but great points there. These are items that would be addressed/discovered in the initial testing phase if this design was going to be produced
Awesome design, if it was in a store I would buy one.
Thank you!
Awesome, very well explained.
Thank you!
impressive, very nicely done!! that will help me A LOT!
You are welcome! Hope it can help
Yes spraypaint would work, we also use an airbrush and just some craft store acrylic to paint it and it turns out really nice.
In Canada you can buy it at your local home improvement centre, but it's probably harder to find in warmer climates.
Is it possible to paint this kind of foam? Would spraypaint work?
I believe spray paint will actually disintegrate the foam! But acrylic would work or regular house paint
@WhiteKnightGaming its not called pink foam, its called rigid foam insulation
Very cool. Im a high school senior and im thinking of majoring in industrial design. Anything to warn me about?
what type of foam do you use, and where do you get it?
Standard rigid foam from your local big box store!
