Kayan folktale: "Ebau Alik" A story of a man named Ebau Alik - a playful simpleton; yet, a man whose demeanor brought about the best of people. There's much we can learn from him though. This is a daily activity amongst Kayan men, especially the younger men who not only see metuk pukat (fish netting) as a way to source food for the family, but also as a form of leisure activity. In the past meju pukat was a necessity, as they had to source food from the forest and rivers. Kayan language: Anih nah hadui daha' lake' Kayan, bi lebih2 na men dalo nyam. Kayan "highway"

Most Kayan now own at least one small engine powered boat to get them around the rivers to do their fishing, or for going to their farm. This has improved their movements quite significantly as in the past, families used to paddle their boats for hours to get to the farm. Kayan language: Usi ha awi daha menuna aleng besei haruk te' kakah, kere' nih pake' mutu (speedboat) daha te' kakah. Mina ji...

This is quite the common way for Kayan in Baram to go to their farm now. In the past, it took a whole day of paddling to reach their farm. This was me going to check on Mei Sali fishing net in Apoh. Kayan language: Nunih nah itam Kayan te' kakah kere' nih. Menuna bese' haruk tam, ji do ure' ateng luma.
Na buvo' 'moden'
มุมมอง 1010 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a 'modern' buvo (fish trap) made from plastic rope. To hold the top edge, a rattan is used and serves as the mouth of the buvo. This is a preferred way to make buvo now as it is both easy and cheap to make. In the past, the whole buvo was made from rattan - a tedious process which required sourcing the rattan from the jungle, cut them to shape and let them to dry before splitting them i...
