First of all, no need to pull it out completely Fernie. Also you should always unbolt the torque converter from the flex plate.You risk damaging the front pump if you try to put it all back together that way. When I worked at Chevrolet years ago, we would unbolt the converter,and take out all the bell housing bolts.Then put in 2 real long bolts ,like 3-4 inches long( at the 2 lowest bolt holes on the transmission) and that allows you to slide the trans back far enough, you can the put the box end of a wrench on the bolts at the crank. Smack the wrench with a hammer to loosen them and reach in with 2 hands and turn them out and the flex plate will drop right out. We used to drop the driveshaft at the rear end and lift the trans off the trans mount and just slide it back , many times with out unhooking the cooler lines, so as to not lose any fluid.Just loosen them from the brackets Never pulled the starer either.(unhook the battery for safety though) I have a tool that is a flywheel turner tool that simplifies things a little.Lisle tool number 23800 I have done that job in my driveway .Not pulling it all the way out saves time,and money I am gld you asked and I am happy to help you with advice.I admire your tenacity to get things dome.
