Radio Programmes from the past, saved from cassette recordings, and reflecting my tastes in broadcast shows. Much will cover the popular music of the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, and later, while there will be other shows unrelated to that, but favourites of mine. I hope these bring back memories.

The Impresarios - Jack Hylton - Part 1
Michael Craig tells the story of Jack Hylton (Part 1) in the series The Impresarios. BBC Radio 2

"In those days he was a bit shy really, so I said to him, stand up and conduct the band like Whiteman does." (CHAPPIE D'AMATO)
"Jack Hylton made more money out of Arthur Askey than Arthur Askey did - that sounds a cruel thing to say, but Jack was a great man, he had tremendous flair." (ARTHUR ASKEY)
"Jack Hylton gave me a contract, paid me £6 a week. fixed me up with a matron who used to look after me, and gave me my name. He was like a second father to me.' (ERNIE WISE)
with the voices of Chappie D'Amato, Arthur Askey, Paul Fenoulhet, Jack Hylton, June Malo, and Ernie Wise.

Yes, I have been listening to some tunes since first hearing Al Bowlly singing Riptide. Nice documentary. Thanks!
Really enjoyed listening to both parts. He wouldn't recognise the Beeb now. Love to listen to more if available. Thankyou! ❤
Just discovered this - I loved his radio programmes, incredible knowledge and a wonderful mix of old and newer music with anecdotes. I have looked to see if any recordings were kept but not found them. So thankyou!
Really great. BBC radio 2 is virtually unlistenable for me now, so I really appreciate channels like yours. 👍
I dont listen to radio 2 no more even bob harris is rotten since johnny walker left,
Hubert Gregg majoring on Carroll Gibbons. It really doesn't get any better than this. I used to love listening to HG in the 90s, when I was a mere stripling of 30 or so, although even today, a number of his witty references can still elude. We're a poor substitute for our forbears.
What a pity this guy had to muck around with the records. Hate the added reverb "listen to the quality!" Hmm. In the ear of the beholder, although I don't doubt his sincerity at all.
Was this on Monday evenings? Marvellous.
Great memories of evenings listening.
Radio 2 has gone downhill so fast it's heartbreaking. Old time radio is still ten times better than anything they give us now.
BRIGHT FUTURES
Al Bowlly made 6 takes before the Decca version was approved of "Love Is The Sweetest Thing".
So beautiful! Just perfect!
A class act. i caught his shows later on in his tenure.
Back in the 1960s ,when I was just a kid, I used to perform in talent shows wherever I could. I entered a contest at the Villa Marina on The Isle of Man performing a comedy sand dance routine. Unfortunately my music (Ted Heaths Shish Kebab) hadn't been packed and the routine depended very much on the orchestration. So that was that. I began to take my make-up off and pack my things away, when a lady came backstage and asked what the problem was? I explained my predicament and she said "That's no problem, my girls know that number". That lady , of course, was the wonderful Ivy Benson. The disaster was not quite over though, because I realised I had no sand! My mom pointed out that the beach was only across the road, so off she went to bring some sand. (Only the tide was in!) Things looked as though fate was against me. Then suddenly I had a lightbulb moment and pack my mom off to find a pet shop and buy some birdcage sand. She came back with two boxes, and the day was saved. I went on to a vast audience and in the end won First prize. The memory of that show has always stayed with me, and the tremendous privilege of having Ivy Benson and her band as my backing playing Shish Kebab outstandingly.
Like. very nice ❤
'THE MOST ELEGANT, ROMANTIC, AND UNFORGETTABLE ERA OF POPULAR MUSIC !
Thank you for posting!
"From Greek algos "pain, grief, distress" (see -algia) + nostos "homecoming," from neomai "to reach some place, escape, return, get home." And boy, does this make me feel nostalgic. When something disappears forever, it's part of life's natural pattern but that doesn't lessen its impact when we do lose it. On another note, I didn't know that Alan Keith (Alexander Kossof) was David Kossof's elder brother.
Haig gordon did,nt he present scotland today with john toye.
Michael meech did he do continuity on T.V
Never heard this before he sounds like a childrens presenter,
Ah the way I Remeber radio 2 someone trying to sort out the faders and clearing there airways its live, yes i think.but i enjoyed..
I remember taping this off the (FM) radio at the time. Fab.
Fantastic! Al Bowlly and Roy Hudd. Both are missed. So much music died with one and so much popular entertainment knowledge died with the other. An emotional six series on seral levels. A belated thanks to both. Love REALLY IS the sweetest thing!
I wish I could wake up every morning with a smile on my face :)
My one deviation from a severe classical career (severely wonderful, that is) was this wonderful band of Edmundo Ros, laying on the floor listening non-stop, also being in the EMI records sales business at the time that Edmuno was in his prime, 10 inch microgrooves being the media. Particularly his arrangements of Broadway music I enjoyed along with his original successes of No No my sweet Lolita, I just discovered it again 5 minutes ago on the web. Wonderful entertainment.
I have become an admired of Al in the past few years. Thanks
Sweet memories.
Good memories fill my mind with this music ! Many thanks !
Artie Shaw was deffo one of my late dad's favourite jazz musicians in that era, particularly his Concerto for Clarinet recorded in 1938.
I LIKED Desmond Carrington on sundays on radio 2 with all time greats starting from 1981
It's great that his son presents this, I'm a big fan of Billy Cotten
Very beauitiful!
Sam Costa also presented Glamourous Nights on radio 2 on sunday nights didnt he
Wakey wakey ,sunday dinner radio programme when i was a child ,happy days
I remember this evening well as I was on trombone !
My uncle, Sid Harris, played tenor sax and clarinet in the Edmondo Ross Orchestra for many years. He went to Japan with ER a number of times.
Thanks from the U.S.A.!
