Basically identical. The two amplifiers seem to just be different Pre-Amps running into the same power amp. My experience is that they are basically the same. I can get the same big thumping and booming lows from both heads. For features, the 5 is definitely more tonal rich with a lot more options, but the EQ of the 4 is really handy if you really need to dial in the cleans.

Either would be awesome. The Heritage SVT-CL has been pretty awesome for me while playing blues, hard rock, and grunge covers and live shows. Really fills the space and is massively loud. Just know that they are really heavy and they are a bit wide which makes moving them without a helper a bit awkward.

Depending on how much and where he is gigging (If he is gigging in a loud environment with a loud drummer, do not listen to what I am going to say) I would consider the ampeg 4vb It as a amazing tone much more liked the b-15 flip top (If you want that) but is also very versatile plus if he gigs alot a svt with a 4*10 cab weighs almost 200 pounds, Unless he really needs the wattage of an svt i would consider going with a v4b with a 8*10 cab as it will give a much fuller sound and it is much easier to haul a 40 pound amp and plug into a cab at a gig than a 80 pound (if your son really needs the wattage there isnt much all tube amps that really compete) but you should really consider atleast depending on how old your son is about a svt as 200 lbs is a lot to need to lift (a 8*10 cabinet has wheels but you still need to carry the 80 pound amp head) Sorry for being late but This is what makes the most sense to me or just get a pf 500 or a venture as they can fit in your pocket and weigh less that 10 pounds Also v4b is normally about 1,000 USD cheaper so you save some money even with a 8*10 cab (it is very hard to recomend anything as i do not know the specifics of if he is playing where he can just plug into a P/A system or he is just playing with his freinds in a small but quiet band or if he is playing in arenas.) @@wooddavid88

Thank you. I am not to that experience level yet though. I bow before your wisdom. 😁 I have only been playing bass for around 17 years. Its something that brings me a lot of enjoyment. Especially the part when I get to jam with friends.

Helping others is the greatest reward. If I was a music teacher I would require every student to watch Ken Burns 19 HOUR documentory 'JAZZ'. The rules all melted away after I watched that baby and my music playing and writing went 'there'. I played in the Seattle area when grunge exploded. I never wanted to be a rock star thank god, I knew dozens of musicians who all died of drug overdoses. @@wooddavid88
